It’s an album that gifts us with Wolf Parade’s nearly abusive guitar-drum-synthesizer trio, but puts them in the hands of different people and adds a few twinkling cameos from the piano family. This foursome’s insights are peripatetic and transcendent, pulling inspiration from Eastern European folk, post-punk, 16th century European Art music, New Wave, obscure sources I don’t know about, and their own heads. (Stylus)
I say it's pretty good. What say you?

I genuinely like Spencer Krug as a musician/songwriter, but I take issue with his vocal affectation, totally copped from Carey Mercer. Mountains of ink have been spilt about the similarites in their singing, but in the which-came-first game it's clearly Mercer. Plus his howl actually feels unhinged and, well, real. Nobody ever gives Krug shit for stealing from his former bandmate, which I just don't get. I guess since they're still cozy and they don't care, I shouldn't either. And, thankfully, the patented Mercer yelp has been downplayed a bit on SUIAD. Maybe Spencer's finally finding his own voice.

I'm a bit late to this, but I prefer this to the new Wolf Parade.

this new song is pretty tight and great. esp. the drums.sounds like something out of wolf parade's debut, which is very fine with me.

so the new one, Dragonslayer, is very good imo.it might be (along with Queen Mary) Krug's best record to date.nothing new in here, but the songs are tighter and rockier, and yeah, it sounds more wolf than sunset.i'll recommend it to anyone who's not yet tired of those indie shtiks.

am i alone in here?

Haha. I don't get this band's appeal.

Not everyone illegally downloads links? I like Zeno is all frustrated because no one is chiming in about an album that doesn't come out for another month.

I'm checking out the Stereogum-posted single now (thanks for linking to it, BTW). There's just something unappealing about Krug's voice to me. So hiccup-y when it isn't flat and listless. The music's okay -- pretty good, even, but neither memorable nor inventive. To be fair, I suppose the music might grow on me (I like the drums, actually). Krug's vocal affectations won't.

i didnt like their previous records too, but this is better, and more wolf parade like,so i'm in for itxpost to daniel

if you liked Queen Mary - youll probably like this one as well,at least to some extent,if not - it's probably not for you
― Zeno, Thursday, 28 May 2009 22:22 (fifteen years ago) link
I liked Queen Mary, but I thought it was seriously overrated.
Obviously, tho, I'll keep an open mind on the new disc. Sunset Rubdown is one of those bands I feel I should like, since a lot of people whose opinions I respect -- and who have similar tastes in music to mine -- love the band. So far, tho, it hasn't happened.

i like it! i only downloaded the leak yesterday though so i've only listened to it once. i actually didn't like "idiot heart" when i heard it alone, but it works well in the context of the album. i like how the album has alot of really great epic moments, and how there's more of the girl on it. he has a great way of taking a really sappy emotional tune and turning it into an awesome rocker over the course of a few minutes.

Going to go pick Dragonslayer after work, encouraged by the positive reviews so far. How would you compare it to At Mount Zoomer? I think that is growing into my favorite Krug so far.

It's my fave SR so far - not quite up to Mt Zoomer though.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago) link
From what I can tell from the soundscans on eMusic, Krug's vocal on the new disc are less . . . yelpy and willfully annoying. That would be an improvement.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 24 June 2009 09:33 (fifteen years ago) link
i thought mount zoomer was largely quite boring compared to everything i've heard from WP and SR.

silver moons>you go on ahead>drogan's lair>idiot heart>nightiangle>anna anna>paper lace>black swan
silver moons is the best song here cause i'm a sucker for good kitchy/catchy melody.

I wrote about 'Random Spirit Lover' for Devon Record Club.
One of the most rewarding and, whisper it, fun albums of the last decade. http://devonrecordclub.wordpress.com/2013/03/02/round-47-sunset-rubdown-random-spirit-lover-robs-choice/

That was a really cool record yeah, saw him play a lot of it live last summer, just him and a grand piano in a small amphitheatre. Too good! He played some stuf from City Wrecker too, seemed v good. Great lyrics and if you're into Bowie vocals...
