Sounds like... Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up"?

classic, of course, but such a strange track for Gaye since the voice is buried under all those layers, it's hard to even make out the lyrics. did Marvin himself do any other tracks in this tight but strung out disco vein? if not, why is it so isolated within his oeuvre? name tracks by him or other artists with the same vibe.

jed, have you heard the Sexual Healing album? it's easily my favorite album of his and i adore him. it's all electro r'n'b. Third World Girl is one of my all time favorite songs in the world. electro/funk/reggae/a bit of disco.

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

and apparently aaliyah covered this?

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

jaxon, no i don't have it. i bought "I Want You" which, because of the cover, i thought would fit the bill. i really like the album but i thought it would be more upbeat than it is.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

2 disco songs that don't really sound like that but have some elements in common that should be sought out by all and are total classics:

Cloud One-Atmosphere Strut, very jammy repetitive groovy disco track with awesome patrick adams synth on top, and what sounds like people having a party in the background

Clyde Alexander-Gotta Get Your Love, pretty dense and crazy, also with a bunch of random people mumbling stuff in the background.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

and apparently aaliyah covered this?

I was gonna suggest that, but decided not to be a smartass.

It's Rodney, currently unemployed! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

bassline vaugely sounds like that "Taking in Your Sleep" song by teh Romantics

Alicia Silverfuck (sexyDancer), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard the Aaliyah cover in a while, but as I remember the production didn't really capture the quality that makes the song so unique/great. It does help to highlight what a wonderful song it is, though.

is this song only available on greatest hits and comps? Seems like it wasn't an album track, but I love it and am bummed I don't own it... otoh I don't want to buy some greatest hits package with a bunch of songs I already own just to get this one.

Live At The Palladium, dude.

I have that, but that's not the same as the single version.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 13 July 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

no wait what am I thinking - I have the "Let's Get It On" live thing and that's before this song.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 13 July 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

Aaliyah's cover is surprisingly non-awful.

The "Sexual Healing" album is actually titled "Midnight Love" and it is indeed brilliant. The last Motown release, "In Our Lifetime," is also really good.

I'd love to read Colin's thoughts after he's heard these.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 14 July 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

I love them, but I have to say that nothing on them *quite* captures the sound of GTGIU's guitar/(keyboard?) bass (Marvin!)/drum kit/grapefruit juice bottle instrumentation.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 14 July 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

I've always admired how texture-based "Got To Give it Up" is, and in my mind it's nearly a precursor to the track-based house/techno that would follow in the decades on. What completely shocks me is that something so un-songy got to #1, and was one of the biggest selling singles in the U.S. that year. I did a somewhat fruitless search a few years ago for similiarly textured disco, the closest I found was a bunch of P&P records (Dan OTM with his selections obv) and some disco re-edits.

He was just lying back, casually drumming on a coconut shell IIRC...you can't manufacture that stuff.

Love Tractor did an OK cover of this.

i think "sexual healing" has elements of this too. it's all the more pronounced in current minimal house.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 14 July 2006 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

no, there is no song that is quite as perfect as this, no

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 14 July 2006 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

but yeah, "Got To Give It Up" or no, I Want You TOTALLY rules ... Marvin's great underrated album ... no Sade without it

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 14 July 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

"got to give it up" opens one of my favorite soundtracks ever: spike lee's summer of sam. (tracklist)

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 14 July 2006 03:47 (nineteen years ago)

One of the best bass lines ever, plus that vocal. Far and away my favorite Marvin song. Although it reminds me of various other things (Kool & the Gang, Boz Scaggs), they don't sound anything like this. That murk is unique to Marvin, as far as I know.

hey Stu! miss you in the Chi! Summerdance got busted :(

south loop getting stupid overdeveloped... dipshit developers

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 14 July 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

hey dude! some days i miss chicago like you wouldn't believe especially the music scene and friends of course. that's weird about summerdance considering it was legal and all. plenty of illegality goin on though.

the wikipedia page on marvin gaye is really good.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 14 July 2006 04:04 (nineteen years ago)

I agree. While it did take awhile for dance music to become more texture-based than song-based, I wonder how influential (if at all) "Got To Give It Up" was to producers/artists at the time. It definitely feels like one of the opening salvos of the tonal shift.

AND THEREFORE MARVIN GAYE PAVED THE WAY FOR MINIMAL TECHNO.

;)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 14 July 2006 04:04 (nineteen years ago)

i think the answer (close to an actual "answer" record in fact) to this might be "running away" by roy ayers and there isn't much that compares to it either.

xpost, hahaha it's so strange that this thread came up. i heard "sexual healing" on the radio the other day and i was thinking to myself that rhymically and vibe-wise it wasn't so far away from a matt john track.

I actually am hard pressed to find a song that sounds like this one. Which...argh.

trees (treesessplode), Friday, 14 July 2006 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

Marvin's own "Ego Trippin' Out" was another one that sounds pretty close to "Got To Give It Up" (though not quite as tight).

Another search: Foxy's "Devil Boogie."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 14 July 2006 05:18 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, all "Sexual Healing" fans should check out Marvin's "Star Spangled Banner," which sounds just like SH.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 14 July 2006 07:52 (nineteen years ago)

May also be the best record ever.

…between Marvin and "Mission (A World Record)" by ELO @1:27 ?

Really enjoyed hearing Sheryl again though. Had forgotten about this song, so thanks, Joe!
