Someone Please Recommend Me Some Feral, Aggressive, Intelligent "Experimental Rock" a la This Heat

I was listening to "Drum's Not Dead" yesterday and was struck by how much it resembles, occasionally, This Heat's more rhythmic/aggressive stuff, right down to the chanted vocals (and the "having three people in the band"). So I dug out my This Heat records and listened to them again, and then realized that Liars aren't really in the same ballpark. It also made me crave more. More Heat! Or, failing that, more music that SOUNDS like This Heat. My thirst for This Heat is deep and wide, but my wallet, alas, is not. As someone who is (much) too poor to afford "Out of Cold Storage," what should I be looking for to tide me over until I am once again solvent?

Dan Selzer once called Disco Inferno 'a digital This Heat' and I'm not inclined to disagree.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 July 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

It's true! The more I listen to it the more I buy it. Except, I own and have listened to everything Disco Inferno has ever released (with the exception of their remix for the Ecstacy of St. Theresa) dozens of times. Best band ever, but... I'm hoping for something I've never really listened to. Something that'll knock my socks on my ass, ideally.

Do you have the Art Bears' Winter Songs? That's a good one.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 15 July 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

The Fire Show could work. You can listen to them for the cost of free here: http://resplendentmusic.com/releases.html (final three, second row). Try Saint the Fire Show first.

lrsn (larssen), Saturday, 15 July 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

in a crossover with another thread... rhys chatham and glenn branca aren't bad options.

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 15 July 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

First three Venom albums.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Saturday, 15 July 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

St. the Fire Show seconded.

It's not really rock at all, but Freddie Hubbard & Ilham Mimaroglu's Sing Me a Song of Songmy is a pretty fierce mix of jazz trumpet, string quartet, and tape manipulation.

Ed Corcoran (ecorcoran), Saturday, 15 July 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'd almost agree, but I always recommend "The World As It Is Today" since it's my favorite and it's particularly angry.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Saturday, 15 July 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

How about Red-era King Crimson.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Saturday, 15 July 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

Anything by Laddio Bolocko, The Psychic Paramount, and Liars.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 15 July 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

Laddio Bolocko is the perfect answer, especially the disc with those creepy set of legs on the cover.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Saturday, 15 July 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

I suggest Laddio Bolocko's The Life & Times Of on No Quarter. It contains LB's entire catalog on 2 discs.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 15 July 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

the work and camberwell now - both are similar to this heat but never quite as good.

phil turnbull (philT), Saturday, 15 July 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

Kontakt Mikrofon Orkest/Black Sheep/Red Balune - good, really bizarre psych-prog-punk from bands involving Geoff Leigh (ex Henry Cow).

Cardiacs - early Cardiacs fits pretty closely with TH's more prog-esque moments

Etron Fou Leloublan - French RIO band, led by drummer who sounds he plays on a toy set, and plays proto punk-jazz

Voigt/465!!! - great Australian band led by the above poster, w/krautrock, RIO, DIY

Massacre - maybe if This Heat were a power trio (tho Hayward's a way better drummer!)

Dominique (dleone), Sunday, 16 July 2006 02:21 (nineteen years ago)

Not sure where Chrome fit in relation to This Heat, but they'll certainly fill the rest of your spec.

Soukesian (Soukesian), Sunday, 16 July 2006 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'll third Laddio Bolocko and second Chrome and Psychic Paramount.

would you recommend Ladio Bollocko if I dig the hell out of Gamelan Into the Mink Supernatural?

rizzx (Rizz), Sunday, 16 July 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

village of savoonga?

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 16 July 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

Rizzx > hell yeah!
I second Trans Am too!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 16 July 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

Kong
Young Gods
I Am Spoonbender
LB, definitely.

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Sunday, 16 July 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Was gonna say The Work. A lot of Rock-in-Opposition/ReR type stuff comes close, but none will make it, which is what makes This Heat so special. The more avant post-punk stuff, the Pop Group, Glaxo Babies, Birthday Party, and some no wave Mars, that early Circle X ep may scratch those itches.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 16 July 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

you might like the new ostinato album. i've been playing it a lot.

http://www.southern.com/southern/band/OSTIN/

they sometimes remind me of old trans am. they remind me of lots of people, i guess. it's a good album. it's mostly instrumental.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 July 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

I was gonna say - early Oneida

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 16 July 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

oh, and Battles too.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 July 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Haha when I saw this thread I thought "Dominique Leone and Dan Selzer to thread," and there they were, saying all the things I would've said.

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 16 July 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

What could be more feral than Yowie - Cryptooology? The best thing Skingraft has ever released? Yes.

lrsn (larssen), Sunday, 16 July 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

no.

I dunno how feral or aggro they are, (not actually heard them) but allegedly Volcano The Bear are very very This Heat-esque...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Sunday, 16 July 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't like it as much as the previous album, which I loved.

Ruins

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 16 July 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't that Brise-Glace an album supposed to be an explicit This Heat tribute?
But it wasn't all that feral, iirc.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Sunday, 16 July 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

don caballero!

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 16 July 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

also, volcano

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 16 July 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

sorry, that's:

volcano!

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 16 July 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

I think the Brise Glace comparison to This Heat comes from O'Rourke's use of tape-splicing in a way that sounds like Horizontal Hold. Which brings to mind the story of David Grubbs interviewing Charles Heyward about that song, asking if it was all spliced together, and Heyward just responded "no, we were that tight" or something.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 17 July 2006 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

volcano the bear is a lot like this heat in some ways. not really the rock parts, but the surreal, fey falsetto parts.

re: brise glace

i'm still not sure this heat is really feral either. but bg and th and others mentioned above always kinda stuck out as bands in a similar vein. tons of brain, yet serious commitment to rock (or at least loud banging/bashing) in some raw form, and maybe that is feral. goin savage on some level.

to me this heat can be pretty mellow too tho.

Twenty Six's This Skin Is Rust
-- a (supasupadupadupafl...), July 16th, 2006. (rslvd)

i don't think this sounds very aggressive at all. It is pretty intense though.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Monday, 17 July 2006 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

I came in here just to suggest The Fire Show, so yeah, totally thirded. I like Above the Volcano of Flowers a bit more than saint the fire show, but you're fine with either of those two (the s/t is a bit uneven but still by no means bad).

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

Radian.
I am sooo OTM on this one. Just listen to the first track on 'Juxtaposition', and it's like This Heat never went away.
