They're really not all that eventful live; so much of it is prerecorded samples. Although, it WAS really cool seeing them anyway, and there is most definitely something to be said for Kathleen Hanna in a tarzan-strap dress rocking out w/ an electric guitar.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and say that it's great to see them live. Maybe a lot of it isn't "live" but both times I've seen them I've had an amazing time - which is significant given that the second time (This Island tour) I really wasn't excited about going, didn't have much interest in the new album, etc... and left feeling TOTALLY pumped up and excited and energized for the band. Some of it's the "living legend" factor of actually seeing Kathleen Hanna for real on stage in reality, but most of it is just feeding off crowd excitement - somehow that band has a way of getting the bug going and once it kicks in there's an excitement both political and personal that makes you feel like you're part of something. They're good.

i've seen em twice and they're probably the most flat-out fun concerts i've ever seen. and i don't even like concerts that much.

they're waiting for their nervous gender CDS to arrive from amazon.com i'm sure. then, according to their label, the will be receiving matching pink triangle tattoos on the bottom of their wrists.

there are unconfirmed rumours about a breakup . . . for the time being, jo's working the desk at a brooklyn hair salon. j.d.'s working with the new england roses. yup.

I think I need to commute to New York and get my hair done.

I wasn't that crazy about the concert.

It would be cool if Kathleen worked with the Beastie Boys on something...

Yeah, their concerts are a bit boring except when they round up any males in the audience and castrate them. That's always a laugh!

There last album was one of the biggest disappointments of my life. I still love and listen to the first two, and thought they kicked ass live. Best moment was for The The Empty, when Kathleen kept pointing the microphone into the crowd for us to scream all the "oh, baby!!!" parts.

Oh word? I didn't know she worked with Beasties (or is it just Ad-Rock?) on Julie Ruin. I didn't get around to checcking that out yet...still it would be cool to hear her make a straight up hip hop song.

one of the best shows i have ever seen was le tigre in boston in 2002. imagine a couple hundred sweaty, joyful lesbians, feminists and gay boys seriously dancing like they were possessed. now imagine being directly in the middle of it. yes.

only weird part was mary timony opening. talk about out of place. i like her, but it did not fit at all.

Just Adrock, in a post-BS2000 programming/technical assistance mode.

I totally didn't know that about the Julie Ruin record! That's neat. I think in the end it's probably the best Hanna record, or at least the most consistently good straight through (although the highs on Reject All American are higher and the original Le Tigre album and EP are strong contenders also). As for a straight hip-hop song, how about "I Wanna Know What Love Is"?

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Monday, 17 July 2006 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard Julie Ruin, but I just listened to a snippet of "I wanna know what love is"...sounded pretty cool but I was picturing a rap (and a beat) with more energy...basically something like what the Beastie Boys do, I think she has the chops for it and it would sound amazing.

Colin Cassidy (Colin Cassidy), Monday, 17 July 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed, although there are better singles.

that 'I Wanna Know What Love Is" song bears many repeated listens, it is spine-tingling.

I'm not entirely convinced Hanna would sound great doing a Beastie-style rap - to the extent that the last couple of Le Tigre records have explored that territory it's pretty much sucked I think. But I could of course be wrong. And I really strongly recommend Julie Ruin; it's a surprisingly hooky record, though for the most part stuck at mid-tempo. It's got that bedroom quality that (at least in this case) can really draw you in and make you feel the joy (empowerment?) of exploring this new technology and figuring out how to make songs with it. Sonically not that different from the first Le Tigre album - just a bit muddier. Things like "Let's Run" and "Eau D'Bedroom Dancing" would have fit perfectly on JR.
