I haven't heard anything by him yet, and I'm wondering where to start?

Also Sprach Zarathustra is my fave.

musik der 80 aktion is i suppose the best place to start if you're looking for a sample of that animal-slaughterin' live aktion without buying a 51-cd set. long stretches of nothing really happening interspersed with "cafe music" and some amazing atonal wheezing from the same small ensemble, i think.

the harmoniumwerk series is highly regarded around here. kosmische drones.

There are some good excerpts of Das 6-Tage Spiel Des Orgien Mysterien Theater:3-9 August 1998 (all of which comprises the 51 cd set) on the Cortical Foundation label, including an excerpt from day 5 on a picture disc showing a bloody crucifixion on one side and some bloody guts on the other. The music is described in the insert as "The climax of the Drama. The catastrophe of the drama. The experience of the fundamental excess is reached." Lots of clashing orchestras, whistles, folk music, etc., all overlapping. The other two are probably easier to find. They are both 3cd sets of different parts of day 3, also on Organ of Corti, both packaged in LP gatefold sleeves with a blood-smeared woman on one side and the back of a man's blood-soaked, cap-covered head on the other.

Musik Der 80. Aktion seconded, it has most of the elements that appear on later, more extensive (& expensive) sets.

My favorite Nitsch document in totality is probably the 8 CD set. Just amazing, and it has a great printed manifesto to boot. The "Day 3" LP with the CD-ROM video is good for getting an idea of what exactly goes on at those "aktions".

I really like the Harmoniumwerk series as well, and would also like to give a shoutout to his solo organ pieces, the most available of which is probably the Komposition Fuer Orgel CD.

Bump, just for fun. Anybody else?

Also perhaps paging Milton to thread.

Great photos! What was the music like?

Soukesian, Saturday, 21 March 2009 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

As you see he was playing on the Uni Chapel organ - a series of 10-15 minute or so layered drone pieces, with the aid of a couple of helpers, using wooden blocks to hold down the keys many at a time. It was very cosmic, with lots of layered harmonies and disharmonies and tones.

He will also be the central guest of Incubate. Will do a Aktion, play the organ and there will also be performances by artists that have been influenced by hum like Lasse Marhaug and Costes http://incubate.org/2009/event/10

Anyone know "Requiem Für Meine Frau Beate: Musik Der 56.Aktion"?

It seems to have become available quite readily (albeit expensively still) in the last couple of weeks. At least, more prevalent for purchase from relatively ordinary channels than usual, so I'm wondering...

Reading above, the 80. Aktion and "Das 6-Tage Spiel Des Orgien Mysterien Theater: 5-Tag" 8cd box seem to get kudos from you guys.

Any other recommendations for stuff that's even vaguely findable and purchasable?

So far I've only explored the Organ stuff, which I'm very much into after Instal earlier in the year. I have the Komposition Fur Orgel CD and the 3 Harmoniumwerk sets are in the post right now. Wondering about the VOD box set too?
More organ stuff is definitely up my street, but I'm also interested in exploring the other, more aktionist, works.

krakow, Friday, 4 December 2009 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

There's some stuff about the VOD box set on this thread:

Vinyl On Demand label S/D and worship thread

FWIW I think this box set is beautiful and worth every penny. It's sold out at source but I guess you might find it from some other retailers.

anagram, Monday, 7 December 2009 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah don't take my griping on that other thread as an indication of the music quality, I was disgruntled b/c it was a reissue that was given a new title, so there was no way to tell until it came out that it was previously released.

all the organ & harmonium stuff stuff is lovely. As far as Aktion documentations, I still think the 8CD box is the best overall representation of his aesthetic in a lot of ways. It comes with some extensive writings and manifestos that are quite interesting.

looking at eBay right now, some good stuff. Both "Island Symphonie" and "Sinfonia" are earlier works for massed orchestra. The Cortical 18.2 release that's up there is mislabeled Day 5, it is actually the vinyl version of Day 3, and it is a pretty great LP (45/33) with a bonus video on CD. All of the 6-Tage Spiel stuff is worth getting imo.

And for all Nitsch fans I highly recommend finding the old Aktionist LPs from the 70's which are on the TLASILA blog. Great stuff.

I have not heard the Frau Beate release, though.
