When Bad Songs Happen to Good Riffs

I'm sorry. I've just had the first four seconds of Wax's "California" in my head for the past month. I'm really pissed the rest of the song is so horrible.

Aw, that's a fine song.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 17 July 2006 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

It is indeed. 13 Unlucky Numbers was such a weirdly out of place album in its time.

...but back to the topic at hand...

Eddie Money PWNZ this thread.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 17 July 2006 06:24 (nineteen years ago)

It had a pretty cool video, too. (x-post)

Mama Roux (Mama Roux), Monday, 17 July 2006 06:32 (nineteen years ago)

'Don't Stop Believing' - talk about fucking up the chorus, but what an opening.

Gdap (gdap), Monday, 17 July 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

OK I think i take the Wax thing back; I've been listening to "California" so much and I do believe I've embraced it.

However, I really really dig the opening/main riff from CrazyTown's Butterfly, but, needless to say.....

four weeks pass...
Let me add to this the opening guitar line from Lit's "Lipstick and Bruises". It rocks. Lit doesn't.

"Interstate Love Song." Although they had the good sense to have that riff show up all through the song, which makes it fairly decent. It's sludgy blahness without the riff.

clotpoll (Clotpoll), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

Comets On Fire - The Bee And The Cracking Egg. Has a couple of good riffs, the opening one especially awesome, but the song just doesn't really do much for nearly eight minutes, at which point I've already skipped to Track 2.

There's that one CKY song - wish I could remember the name - but the riff was fantastic. Song was shit though, natch.

Wan Milius (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't the butterfly riff just sampled off some RHCP jam?

"Disengage The Simulator" or something like that.

"Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" - Jimi Hendrix

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

blur - stereotypes

actually not a bad song at all. just a ridiculously catchy riff

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 24 August 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

Collective Soul to thread: amazing riffs, lousy songs built around them.

"Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" - Jimi Hendrix

Seriously, WTF?!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 25 August 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

I agree. It's a great song, maybe one of the best album closers ever. Although I must say something non-canonical: jimi's singing voice was painfully bad. Too bad he didn't ask Steve Winwood or Buddy Miles to sing for him.

Great 12" version though.

That INXS song which goes DAN DAN DAN! DINGA-NINGA-NINGA-NA-NING!

Anyone know the one I'm talking about?

mmmmmmmmmm, no.

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Friday, 25 August 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

Chap, you're thinking of "Need You Tonight", but I have to disagree.

I vote for Counting Crowes'"Mr. Jones".

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Friday, 25 August 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

Almost every song on the new Thermals album. OK, they are not bad songs, but should've been much better based on the riffs.

zeus (zeus), Friday, 25 August 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

"Collective Soul to thread: amazing riffs, lousy songs built around them."

Sometimes several amazing riffs in one still shitty song. I remember thinkigng "Wow, this song has, like, four different hooks" when their first single came out. They're one of those bands where I won't ever buy any of their stuff, but won't change the radio when they're on.

Horribly, ridiculously offTM. Seriously, what? What riff? Do you mean the bass? It's really not a "riff" type song.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 26 August 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

We just got the new VHS or Beta album in at the station the other day, and the first song "Euglama" reminded me of this thread again. It's this amazing riff, just looped for a minute. They just fade in and fade back out again 20 seconds later!! It's so disappointing; it has so much potential, and then it just sort of ends. But then again, it's much better than having it expanded into a thoroughly mediocre or bad song.

Also reminds me of the bit at the end of "Trigger Cut/Wounded Kite at :17", and I always wished so badly they'd had turned it into a full song until I heard the "Nothing Ever Happens" b-side from the first disc of the Slanted & Enchanted reissue. It's just "blah" compared to the little savory tease at the end of Trigger Cut

That one part near the end of "Lay Low" by My Morning Jacket is pretty awesome, but the verses SUCK (along with the rest of that album).

three years pass...

I just listened to Wax's "California" for the first time in years and it reminded me of this thread.

i came in here to rep for blur's song 2. strangely, i have no recollection of mentioning that other blur song 4 years ago. weird.

not a bad song at all, but i always thought the rest of this one (Supergrass - Born Again) never lived up to the opening

There's a Jetrho Tull riff that I really love but I can never remember the name of the song.

Jethro, even.

Trip Maker, Friday, 24 September 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

Can't see this being popular, but The Human League's Don't You Want Me - that synth bass riff rolls in like some ominous hi-tech techno monster, it's the most dramatic thing ever, and then it just kind of... turns a corner into a much weaker, lighter song. The song is fine on its own terms, but I just want that riff to go on forever, or at least to go somewhere, rather than sound like it was cut and pasted from somewhere else (I remember reading that some of their songs were put together like a collage of different bits; maybe this was one, where they didn't know what else to do with that riff).

Three years later, I'm answering yes, it was "Pretty LIttle Ditty" by RHCP....

xp: the worst thing was that Pretty Little Ditty was/is one of my favorite RHCP jams. No angular funk-metal, no Kiedis.
