David Bowie Early Music Movie Question

Hi-HI!
About, well, 15 years ago I watched a flick on tv which was from the early 70s or late 60s, slightly psychodelic, very much naive, warming and easygoing. I just remember a dusty sun and dancing(?) on a city buildings flat roof-top.
I guess it had more songs of David Bowie in it, but I just remember either "when I'm five" or "when I live my dream"....
And I'm not talking about any movie of leos carax. Was much more hippie-like.

Anyone got any idea? Cheers, Stephan

Are you talking about a film with Bowie in it, like Love You Til Tuesday, or just his songs on the soundtrack?

No, I don't think he scored, it was just his music used AFAIK.

Yes, I know that clip but that's not the movie....... Cheers, Stephan

"When I'm 5" is a better song than "Heroes". I wish he performed it as much. Maybe when he gets that long-coveted Belle and Sebastian support slot...

he was in a mess of avante-garde films in the late sixties. check this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie_filmography

Ooh, I hate "When I'm Five."

I mean, it's a sad song, so what are you supposed to feel sad about? You're supposed to feel sad about the child's beautiful innocence, which will ultimately be lost. I love the A.A. Milne Pooh books, but can't stand the last chapter in The House at Pooh Corner. The tragedy of Peter Pan is another example. The Surrealists, I think, had a healthier view of childhood. And that's the distinction for me between the thing Hans Keller was being condescending about on that Pink Floyd TV clip and "When I'm Five."

It's not the innocence that will be lost, if you grow up, but the plain view on life which lets one feel in touch with it.
Still my question -which might be to special- remains unanswered. I'm searching for an early 70s movie with one or two early bowie songs in it, but no bowie acting at all.

Is it a film made in the early 70's or set in the early 70's? If the latter, The Ice Storm would fit the bill.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, it's a sad song

No, I don't think so at all! It's a character song, with incredibly sharp and sympathetic observation of the central character. The language is so good:

If I close one eye, the people on that side can't see me
I get headaches in the morning and I rode on Freddie's tricycle
And everywhere was funny, when I ran down to the sweetshop
Then I fell and bleeded-up my knee and everybody soppied me

There's sadness hinted at ("I wonder why my daddy cries"), but also comedy ("I'll marry my mum"). It packs a lot of observation into a short space, and in terms of short story-style writing it's much better than a lot of the impressionistic stuff he's done since, of which he's provided the best description: "It's not really work, it's just the power to charm".

"Is it a film made in the early 70's or set in the early 70's?"

It's made in the early 70's, didn't have a modern look. The "dusty look" could be compared to "Alice doesn't live here anymore" (-or this famous anti-war movie, I don't remember the name, not talking about mash, much more absurd & irrational... -) only looking cheaper.
