Badly Drawn Boy will release a new album this autumn.

Born in the UK, seemingly inspired by Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA record, will hit shelves on October 23.

It will be the fifth LP from the singer, whose real name is Damon Gough, and follows 2004 release One Plus One Is One. Song titles finalised so far include: 'Degrees Of Separation', 'Nothing's Going To Change My Mind', 'Promises' and 'Times Of Times'

Anticipate? Could it be, oh, a return to past glories?

(thanks, you know who you are, btw)

If he ever returns to his EP2 glories it will be, without a doubt, the greatest comeback in rock history.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

Surely this is someone's idea of a joke?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

What a shite title.

grand (grand), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

There really is no need for this cretin in 2006.

One plus one is one is albatross food.

def zep (calstars), Thursday, 20 July 2006 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

This is the first genuinely completely worthless punning title I've seen. Shit's (beginning to be) over, I guess. Too bad. I won't have time to put out "Remain in Blood".

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 20 July 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...
So, is it really that bad as the critics say? It's truly not a classic, but there is a few great songs on it, and he'll never be James Blunt at least.

zeus (zeus), Friday, 20 October 2006 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

This occasional critic loved it.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 20 October 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting that two years later, "All Possibilities" (best song he's written in a LONG LONG time) is on an ad here in the US...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 20 October 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

.. and over here too.

Okay, this is coming form someone who has been a BDB fan since his first album, and let me preface this by saying that I really enjoyed the majority of "One Plus One is One" (some amaazing tunes)

Sadly though, his new album is by far the worst thing he's ever done. There wasn't one song that caught my ear, with most of them turning into meandering schmaltx-fests.

It's very hard for me to admit, but this is a weak record

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Sunday, 22 October 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

that's disappointing. i liked a lot of 'One plus One is One', much of 'Bewilderbeast', and none of 'Fish' at all. had hoped this would be in the vein of the former :(

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 22 October 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

i gave up halfway through "fish" so i won't even think about bothering with this one

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Sunday, 22 October 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

"fish" was really bad. but jim, have you heard "One plus One"? there are some excellent songs on it.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 22 October 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

'About a Boy' is his best album

bham (bham), Monday, 23 October 2006 06:27 (nineteen years ago)

Gonna have to agree with the critics here. Not only is there nothing on here that's as good as EP2 or EP3 (sigh), there isn't even anything on here that's as good as "Coming in to Land"!!

With each passing album, Mr. Gough's career just gets sadder and sadder.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 23 October 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

I personally don't think "About a Boy" is his best album, largely because it has alot of short "interlude" type parts and is really a soundtrack more than a proper album, in my opinion (yes, I realize it WAS a proper album).

Personally I think "Bewilderbeast" is probably his shining acheivement, but he could have one hell of a compilation culled from his dissapointing albums

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

to be honest for me the sheen went with the re-recording of 'spitting in the wind'.. up til then i'd been obsessed with hearing every note he recorded but hearing that.. definitely changed something. as far as i'm concerned he probably peaked with ep3/ep4. having said that i do still like the first album and about a boy has a couple of nice singles.

A compilation of those first 4 eps would indeed make a wonderful record. is there any reason why the first 2 have never been made availbel on cd? is it just andy votel's vinyl snobbery?

bham (bham), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

Are the EPs still available anywhere?

def zep (calstars), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

I also liked 'One Plus One', it was one of the most underrated albums of that year (2004?). I think the biggest problem with BDB is that he doesn't know how to "compile" a proper album: throw away the throwaways, etc. Even "Bewilderbeast" is too long, it could've been really a classic if he'd cut 10-15 minutes from it.
Same problem with all of the albums, with this new one, too.

zeus (zeus), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

well, I liked it.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

I really like 'Born In The UK' (the song!), there should've been more of this type, uptempo songs on the album. Also 'Nothing's Going To Change My Mind' is a beautiful song.

zeus (zeus), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:38 (nineteen years ago)

"Are the EPs still available anywhere?"

EP3 & EP4 were released on CD & are pretty easy to get hold of - they turn up on Ebay pretty regularly for a couple of quid, usually. The first 2 eps were limited edition 7 inch vinyl only, & so fetch hundreds of pounds these days.

bham (bham), Thursday, 26 October 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

i have one of the eps, maybe the third -- he was good, for a bit.

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 26 October 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

haha belongs to the 'mildly experimental late 90s indie' thread.

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 26 October 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, "One Plus One is One" has some great tunes on it for sure
