and your comment that zep was the greatest rock band of all time is absolutely ludicrous to me, but hey it is your opinion and I won't knock you for it. See how that is done? Giving people space for their opinions?

can we use this thread to discuss & bemoan the rhetorical function of "sorry" in this sentence & many others like it? I'm pretty sure what it means is "your opinion probably brought you pleasure, but when I get done saying what I have to say, you'll know that your pleasure was bullshit, so I apologize, only I don't really mean it, because my own opinion brings me pleasure"

...but i think zep is the best and also the eric clapton era yardbirds are just another fairly typical blues rock band (the fact that crapton wanted to quit because of the awesome "for your love" pretty much typifies everything that's wrong about him)

And I LIKE Led Zep too! But there's this friend of mine who is a major soul collector, and he has this weird habit of describing any and every white rock band from the Vietnam era as "garage." That is as wrong as two left-foot shoes; a Led Zep song on a BACK FROM THE GRAVE or PEBBLES compilation would sound incorrect, wrong, out of place, accidental, you name it.
But a YARDBIRDS track would be more in the groove.

Are you kidding me? Yardbirds? What a joke. It's funny that some people think going against the norm is the cool thing to do. Sorry, but Zeppelin is the greatest rock band of all time and to claim that The Yardbirds are better isn't only a sad mistake on your part, it's foolish. Give me a valid explanation for The Yardbirds being a better band or stop emabarrassing yourself.

The Yardbirds were an amazing group and kind of an illustration on how far electric guitar music moved between say 64-68. The biggest problem with the Yardbirds is that they never really had consistent songwriting within the group and their management really made some odd moves that kind of stalled their career out. Their management and record labels in the US also in hindsight didn't realize what they had. By the time Page ended up in the Yardbirds, that band was kind of behind the times, trying for any type of odd ball pop hit they could do with material that was really ill-suited for their talents. Maybe a different manager or label would have said, forget trying to do these odd Hollies like numbers and got them playing heavy blues with the Marshalls cranked with both Beck and Page up front ala The Experience.
LZ lifted things from here and there, but added to what they created and their penchant for arrangement and production kind of puts them in a different level. LZ also had pretty cohesive management from a band aspect that kept them on a straight line onwards or upwards, where many of their contemporaries when you look at the story did not (see Deep Purple or say Humble Pie). Then again, the state of the art of electric guitar music moved at light speed in just a few years and what was the cutting edge of the Yardbirds in 66 was quite different than the time LZ I came out in 69.
Really the first Jeff Beck Group could have been Led Zep, as the talent was there in line to be phenomenal large group but things didn't work out and Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood went onto The Faces and solo success.
― earlnash, Monday, 19 April 2010 02:41 (sixteen years ago)
zepplin really aren't my cup-of-tea, tho i totally get why others love them.
regardless of your feelings on the band, they were really good musicians, no? it's hard for me to evaluate their musicianship against, say, the current crop of indie rock acts (not that it matters, but i've just wondered about it).
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 19 April 2010 02:45 (sixteen years ago)
their penchant for jrr tolkien fantasy is what really put them on a different level
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 19 April 2010 02:46 (sixteen years ago)
If you cut out the blues influence, lyrically speaking Burzum and Led Zeppelin are nearly identical.

Maybe Yardbirds vs Cream would've been at least a little fairer
― kelpolaris, Monday, 19 April 2010 03:09 (sixteen years ago)
The thing is that the Yardbirds didn't change in the wake of Cream and the Experience coming out. I think Beck saw that change happening, as his group after he left definitely was going for that kind of sound.

I like LZ, but I have to go with The Yardbirds on this. In the post Clapton-era they seem to be trying to do about 10 things at once - trad blues, pop, raga, proto-metal, psych, garage yet with a weird take on all of them. When it all falls into place it's greater than anything LZ ever did- e.g UUSD, Heart Full Of Soul, Shapes Of Things, Turn Into Earth, What Do You Want, Puzzles, HTYTA, Little Games....LZ are impressive, but once you kind of get what they're about they're pretty heavy-handed and somewhat dull.

From the Led Zeppelin: Classic Or Dud? thread:
Zep rules.... i didn't read everyone answer cuz im too stoned.....but zep kicks ass and everyone that said that zeppelin's music sucks, is way too stubborn to let the music take over.......by not liking zep you have just not succum to transendece or Plants voice............you think its cool not to like what everyone else thinks...(you all know who u are).....u think that by liking a less popular band it makes you more unique.....but in actuality your just a bunch suckers that think it cool to listen to a shitty band.....

it's weird that someone who's so heavy into Zep wouldn't at least acknowledge that the Yardbirds are pretty good, even if stoned. it's like someone who loves Lou Reed but thinks the VU suck.

They (Armageddon) mainly rock hard on their album but the second song is mellow and it is great also and the subject matter is especially poignant considering Relf's soon to be fate.
