Not well, but I've seen him around a lot & talked to him a couple of times (no long conversations, not about politics or anything heavy). You see, a guy I knew in school started a HC/punk record store in Ghent a couple of hundreds of meters from where I live now, and Steven was a regular there, very nice guy, talked to everyone, one of the most normal & sympathetic people of that whole crew, I'd even say.

I had NO idea "37 year old squatter Steven W." was him. Shocking.

I had no idea about his politics or his racist tendencies or anything. I assumed everyone there was HC/straight edge/idealist/peace and environment activists etc.

The guy is a complete scumbag and will rot in hell for this.
I feel sorry for his bandmates and of course the kids and families involved.

Although it's all hugely speculative, I think the rationale was thought to be that if they told anyone, the families would be more likely to keep it within the family. Rather than any specific racist intent. That's just what I read, obviously

(BTW Stan, in the future I'll probably be in Ghent from time to time. Maybe we can meet up once.)

In terms of being able to still enjoy TPOG or not, I think this is a personal matter. Every individual reacts to this differently. Being shallow or not shallow I don't think comes into question here. Personally I do think a lot of people to often disasociate everything with persons in terms to better deal with things, often leaving the human-eqation behind for some clean, and in my eyes unrealistic and undesirable, cognitive view of the world and humanity, devoid of feelings and inter-personal relationships. I can fully understand people not being able to listen to TPOG anymore without associating what has come to pass. And I can also understand people for whom it does not matter.
