iLiKETRAiNS - Progress Reform

got their track "The Beeching Report" off headphonesex earlier in the week and, DAMN, if this isn't one of the best songs i've heard this decade. so good i went out that day and bought the (MiNi) LP Progress Reform which is.... well, it's more than slightly disappointing but how could it not be compared to this track? it's been a loooooong time since what is, ostensibly, an indie rock song has had such a huge effect on me.

anyway the mini lp, if not great, is still pretty good. the songs have interesting, slightly crazy subject matter but always delivered in deadly serious and epic/portentous style. "The Beeching Report" is about the reform of the UK railways, "A Rook House For Bobby" is about Bobby Fischer & "terra Nova" is about Robert Falcon Scott's artic expedition. I have a slight problem with the deployment of cliche'd phrases within the lyrics ("They've made montains out of molehills" "chase me to the end of the earth" etc) but it's not too much of a problem.

anway, check out "The Beeching Report" on headphonesex, i don't know how you can not love it.

I didn't think I liked records this funereal any more but I think it's fantastic.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, the horns on that track blew my mind they sounded so great, let alone everything else

unnamedroffler (xave), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

i love this band. rook house for bobby is one of my favourite singles of recent times.

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

I saw this band at the bottom of a six band bill in front of 50 people about 18 months ago. Have they got better since then, because they were dreck.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

who cares? the record is good. live shows are for chumps

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

i probably don't actually mean that

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

dom, since you were the one who went to the gig you are the only one who is in a position to possibly say whether they got better.

xpost

i'm not a big gig fan, they tend to be full of people who don't really seem to like the music and just stand and talk.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

actually i'm full of shit. i like gigs but good bands can often be bad live.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

I am going to OBTAIN this studio recording, and then REPORT BACK tomorrow. Just for you guys.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

woo

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

just go to headphonsex and get the track.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 20 July 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

hmm actually it seems to be down.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 20 July 2006 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

headphonesex is down?

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 20 July 2006 23:04 (nineteen years ago)

They have really great videos which you can see here http://www.iliketrains.co.uk/snow/film.htm

I think of them as British Rail Power.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 20 July 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

That Terra Nova video is fantastic - thanks for the link, I'll check out the rest

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 29 July 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

i like the whole e.p., i don't even like 'Beeching Report' as much as the others. good band, they can stay but i'd like them to change their stupid name

rizzx (Rizz), Saturday, 29 July 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

I thinbk the juxtaposition of the name with the music is pretty funny, and great...

unnamedroffler (xave), Saturday, 29 July 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
Just saw them in Brussels tonight (in front of about 150 people) and they were great!

Two new tracks, too: "Spencer Perceval" (the only British prime minister who was assassinated) and "Dr. William Brydon" (the only dude of 15,000 who survived the battle of Kabul in 1842, also the subject of this painting) - but that's only for fact geeks who go and look up this stuff on the net :-)

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

(and even then they sometimes misread details. the correct Brydon story is here)

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

i have to thank jed for introducing me to this lot. thanks jed!

Saw them again last night, and they did blow me away, even at the top of a quite amazing bill. (The Early Years and The Strange Death Of Liberal England.)

Hrrmmm, British Rail Power? Thing is, ages ago, when BSP's press person was describing them to me, I got this idea in my head of what I thought they would sound like. And I was very disappointed and never quite forgave them when they *didn't* sound like my idea of them.

iLT *do* sound like that mental image, which makes me very, very happy.

Blah Blah Blah (kate), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

oh good! i'm going to see them on friday.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

the early years feature the type of young drone rock bloke that kate crushes on ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I have listened to the album now, and blimey - if all you've heard is the album (as good as it is) - the live show is about a hundred times more... *intense*

x-post eh? No, I don't really think that the Early Years are that attractive. Their music is really, really good, but I don't really fancy them.

Blah Blah Blah (kate), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Despite living in Leeds, I've yet to see them live. However, they're headlining day 3 of Brainwash festival on Sunday. I hope I can still cope with *intense* by then.

chris j (chris j), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oooh, Napoleon IIIrd, as well. He's ace, too.

Blah Blah Blah (kate), Thursday, 19 October 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

Tremendous gig on tuesday and the Neil Hannon (with slight morrisey overtones) baritone of a voice makes the album. He could probably sing the phone book and it would sound right. Wonderful album.

StanM, Friday, 22 June 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

I quite like these guys. 'Spencer Perceval' was pretty good, if a little too close to EITS-style post-lite for comfort (redeemed utterly by the vocal delivery, however; the guy's voice is exquisite, like Jarvis Cocker gone three octaves down).

Just got offed, Friday, 22 June 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

"The Beeching Report" is, however, as Jed says, utterly fantastic.

I thought the mini-album sucked a big one.

Woah, "Beeching Report" omg this song is AWESOME! It is so glum and funereal and bleak. Perfect for today's weather. Thanks for sending it to me jed! I think I will be listening to this a lot.

Trayce, Monday, 9 July 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

The choral vocals at the end of this song are incredible, they give me goosebumps.

StanM, Friday, 28 September 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

Saw them in Glasgow on Wednesday. Excellent stuff. They manage to do the whole post rock thing without kicking the arse out of it for 30 minutes a song and they add in nice things like choruses.

Songs I can remember:
Terra Nova
The Deception
We Go Hunting
A Rook House For Bobby
We All Fall Down
Spencer Percival
Twenty Five Sins

I grabbed the leaked album the other week but I'll go buy a proper copy on Monday.

Support band Her Name Is Calla were quite good too - imagine if EiTS had Sigur Ros keyboard melodies and Roy Harper on vocals, oh wait that sounds shite :-/

onimo, Friday, 28 September 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

if you get it from recordstore.co.uk there's a limited edition booklet with essays, by the way. (someone has a picture of it on their message board where it looks like the CD says "learned" instead of "learnt" : http://www.iliketrains.co.uk/confabulation/viewtopic.php?t=2395 )

StanM, Friday, 28 September 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

er, nevermind, it also says "promotional copy not for sale"

StanM, Friday, 28 September 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

damn, i forgot about that glasgow gig although they were actually quite poor the last time i saw them.

Glad to see they're still going. Progress Reform blew me away but I kind of lost track after they cleaned up their act with He Who Saw the Deep, which must be 10+ years old now. Still have some affection for them, though.

+/- same here, but a live show like this is a nice way to hear the other stuff imho
