Best / Worst Versions of "I Put A Spell On You"

Some noodlehead is playing CCR's Chronicle in the store and it-a gets me to thinkin' : what are the best and worst versions of this nugget ever put to wax?

I'm going right now with Hawkins first recording of the song and Nina Simone's for the former, and Hawkins' 80's rerecording with the rap and Marilyn Manson's for the latter. But I'm willing to admit there's a number of potentially dodgy versions I've not heard, such as Queen Latifah's on that horribly conceived standards album.

Comedy vote for Diamanda Galas.

That's one of my fave Diamanda songs.

Natacha Atlas? I can't state with any objectivity if its good or not after seeing it in Elia Suleiman's Divine Intervention...

"Did you get glass in it?"
"No, wood."

Best: Biggie- Kick in the Door
Worst: Marilyn Manson

ramon fernandez (ramon fernandez), Sunday, 23 July 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Bryan Ferry's version is pretty good (one of the only things I liked on Taxi)

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 23 July 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

I like to hear that Alan Price version, actually. It's the number one match when you use the shitty song search feature at work.

Any ideas as to where I can track it down?

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Sunday, 23 July 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

I can only guess the Bette Midler one from that Hocus Pocus film in the early nineties is fairly reprehensible.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 July 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the arabic-disco version I heard in a Palestinian film called Divine Intervention.

(one quick visit to IMDB later)

Oh! That was the Natasha Atlas version. Move along.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 23 July 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

And I should have really read the top of the thread.

best: Screamin' Jay's original
worst: Marilyn Manson

I likw CCR's too.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Monday, 24 July 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Nothing tops Screamin' Jay, but I LOVe the Natacha Atlas version.

The part in the SJH version where he does that kinda bark/laugh = best vocal anything ever.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Also, now I'm going to have to listen to "Feast of the Beast of the Mau Mau".

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

oh come on what's wrong with manson's version?

people explosion (Sonny A.), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Screamin Jay Hawkins and Alan Price are the best I know. Anyone got a shout for the Tim Curry version? It's TIM CURRY after all.

everything (everything), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Bryan Ferry's version is pretty good (one of the only things I liked on Taxi

Ferry's version is godly!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

Best: CCR
Worst: Pete Townshend. He sings it like my grandma.

Dan Heilman (The Deacon), Monday, 24 July 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

Best: Screamin Jay
Worst: Biggie, "Kick in the Door"

I loves me some Biggie & Preem, but I hate how Premo takes the lurching momentum out of the track. It feels too restrained, especially in contrast to the abandon of the source material.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 24 July 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

No-one mentioned Nick Cave's version?
