It looks nice enough, but it's just going to remind me of a bunch of hot girls that didn't want to have anything to do with me.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

Seems sort of superfluous to me, but I guess that's the nature of hits packages. Once you get to the double-disc scale it starts to seem silly to not just go get the actual albums. And then at the same time, this doesn't quite supplant Eponymous, because it leaves off the otherwise unavailable "Romance." It seems like a neophyte arriving at the IRS years would still start with Eponymous and go explore the rest of the records from there; the only people who would buy this are stocking-stuffers who want to look like they bought something more expensive.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

was this only supposed to cover the IRS stuff, or is it an admission that everything after that sucked?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

Well, In Time (the WB comp.) just came out in '03.

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

The bonus disc looks cool enough, but arrrr, grrrr, the whole thing's gonna be like $26.99, isn't it? Arrrr.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

(I'm a pirate.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

Looks pretty damn fine to me.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

The sequencing on the 1st disc is v. smart stuff. I imagine that listening to *those* songs in *that* order would make for quality listening.

I was listening to a recent live performance of "Life and How to Live It" today, and was struck by how much it was weakened by the new and superfluous keyboards. So much of what's good about the 1st 3 albums in particular is the spaces that were left in.

Harthill Services (Neil Willett), Thursday, 27 July 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

And the sense that they were trying to rush to fill those spaces in, but couldn't quite make it.

i pretty much lost my way with them after the last album. haven't listened to anything by REM actively for 2 years or more despite being a huge fan in the 90's. also was pretty sceptical about *yet another* compilation they were involved with so soon after the remastering/best of splurge of a few years ago.

then i just happened watched this last night :
http://www.amazon.com/R-E-M-Mine-I-R-S-1982-1987-Collection/dp/B000GTJSMG/sr=8-4/qid=1157378401/ref=sr_1_4/102-8671571-9654519?ie=UTF8&s=dvd
(scroll to the bottom and click track 1 if u fancy seeing it)

had to pick my jaw up out of the carpet.
can't wait for the dvd now. literally cannot wait.

pisces (piscesx), Monday, 4 September 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

Nothing wrong about the musical content, but does the world need yet another IRS years "Best Of" by R.E.M?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 4 September 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

"Begin the Begin" into "Radio Free Europe" is such a bad segue. Momentum killed.

Hideous Lump (Hideous Lump), Monday, 4 September 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

I like the cover.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 4 September 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

That "regular edition" cover's a little more punk than we're used to seeing from R.E.M.!

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 4 September 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

and the bassman, he had all the right moves

el borracho (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 September 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Time After Time" (Annelise)' (Michael's pick)

Time After Time was my least favorite song! Time After Time was my LEAST favorite song!

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 4 September 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

asa!

el borracho (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 September 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

the lettering they chose (VERY i.r.s.) is perfect for marketing to thirtysomethings who totally got boners over this band in the '80s but are afraid to admit it now. i probably will pick this up, if only for the dvd.

el borracho (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 September 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Aren't they sold seperately?

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 4 September 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

are they? oh well.

el borracho (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 September 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

eight months pass...
in light of the best album poll thread (and the top 4 albums being judged to be the first 4) i wonder how many people have bought this
'IRS best of...' or its dvd companion.

pisces, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

Disc 2 is really ace. Frankly, along with "Dead Letter Office" it's the REM that I still play, perhaps because of the unfamiliarity of most of it.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

Almost 2 years later and I'm listening to this on a snowy day. I don't play REM much but sure appreciate them when I do.
