and so far it's really good. he starts out with a curtis mayfield type track to trick all the old fans in and then BLAM! my coworker told me he hated it so i knew i had to hear it.

HE'S GOT FUCKING DAVID MUTHERFUCKING BANNER ON A TRACK. Keak the Sneak, Federation. dunno who else yet because i'm only 7 songs in but it's really fucking good.

and yes stop asking if i like hyphy already, i do...

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:08 (nineteen years ago)

alright, so i'm fast forwarding through the songs and he drops the synths and starts getting weird. punk rock samples, noise, radio static, arabic sounding stuff? thom yorke (i think?). he went from E40 to Unkle in 10 songs. wtf. well i guess we can all join hands and agree that some of the songs are good.

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

he went from E40 to Unkle in 10 songs. wtf.

Yup, still goth at heart, then.

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

"What Have I Done" featuring Christina Carter

As in Charalambides?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:33 (nineteen years ago)

as in yes

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'll give him that much!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:40 (nineteen years ago)

apparently i'm missing that track :(

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

A number of songs on the 17-track set explore hip-hop more fully than Shadow ever has,

Uh, hard to imagine how this could be accurate

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

well, hip hop in as much as there are mcs and honest to goodness pop songs

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

God this is just so damn weird. Half of it is ghostwalk-the-Cutlass and the other half is "I wonder if Thom Yorke will be my pen pal". The most recognizably Shadow-ish thing on this is "Broken Levee Blues" which is like two minutes. Baffling.

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:58 (nineteen years ago)

k, so i actually have the Christina Carter song, but i'm missing the e40. nate, is that one good? can you ysi me in email?

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Thursday, 27 July 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

(fuck, I meant "ghostride," whatever, back to P.O.S. for me or something)

xp: there seems to be some mislabeling of the last couple tracks and I have no idea where the E-40 one is at. If it is anything like the other hyphy cuts on this I need it bad.

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 27 July 2006 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

Has this really been released? I am bouncing in my seat with excitement! Hello HMV, goodbye money!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 27 July 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit, turf talk and christina carter on the same album. gotta hear that.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 27 July 2006 08:38 (nineteen years ago)

Is this record already released, or just leaked?

nancyboy (nancyboy), Thursday, 27 July 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

P.S. "GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND" is awesome.

nancyboy (nancyboy), Thursday, 27 July 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

Just leaked.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 27 July 2006 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, are the hyphy trakcs better than "3 Freaks"? Cause that was horrible.

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

they're all very similar to 3 Freaks and that song is AWESOME.

u should spend some time in this thread Bay Area Hip Hop [usually] Sux

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

DJ Shadow and Christina Carter, that's really sick. I hope it's a good track for i dont know if i can forgive CC otherwise...mrrhaha

rizzx (Rizz), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

hahah wtf Christina Carter on a hyphy album. What's next? The Skaters producing for Kelis?

Rizz (Rizz), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

hahah wtf Christina Carter on a hyphy album. What's next? The Skaters producing for Kelis?

rizzx (Rizz), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

I really don't like Shadow in general (Endtroducing is okay but WAY overrated and I hardly ever listen to it), but I gotta say this sounds interesting.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

I've heard "Backstage Girl" and I liked it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

i read a review that said this could be 3 really good EPs. the hyphy, the backpacker and the singsongy/experimental. i think i'd only buy the hyphy (actually heard he may release something with only those tracks - maybe a few extra).

also heard banner is touring with him and almost the whole album is live instruments.

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

Should be fun. I still listen to the Private Press a lot.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

I like David Banner a lot ... uh based on the one album of his I have.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

this album is garbage.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

I bet the hyphy beats are pretty good. I'll check it out.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 27 July 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

i like shadow! but he should never give interviews ever.

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 27 July 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

i confused dj shadow with dj spooky for awhile. long time ago, that was.

gear (gear), Thursday, 27 July 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

i like shadow! but he should never give interviews ever.

Did you read the 33 1/3 on Endtroducing...?

nate p. (natepatrin), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

I did. Thought it was really good even if the intro was terrible.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 28 July 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

fuckn kasabian

zappi (joni), Friday, 28 July 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

I can't hear that name without thinking of Rabo Karabekian from Breakfast of Champions. I assume one of the goopy Britpop things on this record has one of their guys singing on it?

nate p. (natepatrin), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

The new Shadow album is WHACK! There are some good songs and some really bad songs, including the songs that sound like Coldplay with 0 hip-hop influence in the least. The album has the classic producer makes album problem of inviting to many damn inconsistent guests. the album as a whole is a complete mess. that being said there are some killer tracks.

the following are standout tracks in my mind.

"This Time"
"3 Freaks" featuring Keak Da Sneak and Turf Talk
"Seein' Thangs" featuring David Banner
"Enuff" featuring Q-Tip and Lateef The Truth Speaker

lawrencerock (lawrencerock), Friday, 28 July 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

I can't my vote for the hyphy tracks, but the rest is garbage. Wasn't disappointed because my expectations were low to begin with.

josh in sf (stfu kthx), Saturday, 29 July 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

this album is bloody awful. I listened to it once and deleted it.

all the faux funk bullshit.. awful truely awful..

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Saturday, 29 July 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

If you go into a DJ Shadow album and not expect "faux funk bullshit" you might as well not have any expectations about anything at all ever.

nate p. (natepatrin), Saturday, 29 July 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Can't wait for Sept. 19... I hear the new album translates really well live. Shadow's been touring Europe, and the word is that the new songs are really dope live. It seems that many people are hating on the album because it is admittedly very different. Just the same, Shadow's work has always been interesting and different from album to album. For those who've heard the new album already, how'd you come across it so early?

Jenny B (Jennimal), Friday, 8 September 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

I've seen the live show. It was pretty mediocre. Also there were a bunch of - admittedly moronic and forewarned people - who were completely dissatisfied with it and shouting for organ donor and such so he actually did a little segue where he played some old favourites but even after that a lot of the crowd didn't really engage with it.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Friday, 8 September 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

this album is woeful. for once I agree with Pitchfork. 5.8 haha.

and from all eports the shows / tour for this album has been shit. everyone i know who saw it said its dreadful.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

i never listened to the album a second time

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 03:25 (nineteen years ago)

:(

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

and from all eports the shows / tour for this album has been shit. everyone i know who saw it said its dreadful.

I saw him at the beginning of this month and he was fantastic. Lateef was in great form as well if a little confused as to Irish geography, thought Stradbally was Dublin (this only makes sense if you think: Strabally has a pop. of about 1000, Dublin has over a thousand times that [still not much I know!]) Still not willing to give the album another go. It's terrible :(

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

Dreadful, really? I was pretty much dead set on seeing him this Saturday night. What stuff does he play? How do the rappers on the new tracks work out live? What is shit about it?
I'm curious because this is $25.

Harpal (harpal), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

Specifically does he do "Seein' Thangs" featuring David Banner? That's probably my favorite track off the [mediocre] album.

Harpal (harpal), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

obviously this hasn't quite done the figures people were expecting.

received mailout from Sony Connect - who are already selling this album for a fiver.

somewhat tempted, but folks whose opions i rate have told me to avoid...

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

funny how i've not been falling over myself to hear this even tho i think i would like some if not all of it (as with 'the private press').

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

I've not actually gotten round to hearing this. I was mainly put off by a friend persistently IMing me telling me to download it basically so he could have someone to go through the ordeal with.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

a fellow cut-n-paste dj/producer described the album as a 'car-crash' of an album

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

I think you'll find the car crash was on the previous album.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

Still disappointed about this album.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

must get round to listening to this, I love messy failures, Dune's one of my favourite films.

lexurian (lexurian), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

I never bothered to read the inside of my Psyence Fiction booklet because everything was so small, but after researching this failure, I came across an article that mentioned that Jason Newstead was on that album. I opened up PF and sure enough, there is his picture. Do you think he paid DJ Shadow lots of money to be on it so he could get some cred?

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to have to pick this up eventually as I'm a diehard fan, but what I've heard so far is not promising. I get the strong impression that Shadow has this need to constantly confound expectations to prove he's an artist, which can be a good thing but creates the risk of making a trainwreck of an album. I also get the impression that he wanted to prove he could make a hit song or something and underestimated what it takes. I also think Shadow's natural style is way too contemplative for him to make a good hyphy album. He doesn't have the right kind of energy. I hope he proves me wrong by following up with the greatest hyphy album ever made.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

This album is a bitch to dl for some reason.

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

I think you'll find the car crash was on the previous album.

*golf clap*

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, I've gone and done it:

1) Outsider Intro - This sort of dark, self-aggrandizing thing is sort of fun to indulge in when it's all scratchy and campy sounding and you don't really think he means it, but somehow here I'm afraid he does.

2) This Time - Uh, what is this? It just sounds like Shadow playing some b-level Bill Withers/Donny Hathaway knock-off record with beefed up drums. And it's BORING

3) 3 Freaks - This is a pretty good beat, but it's a bit of a shock coming out of the first two songs. The hook is lame. Also that corny "HELLO" thing really annoys me and takes away from the song. The raps aren't very exciting.

4)Droop E Drop

5) Turf Dancing - Ok, at least he's staying on the Hyphy theme for more than one track. Another decent but not mind-blowing beat. All the sounds he's using are a bit *farty*. Again lyrics not really grabbing me.

6) Seein Thangs - HAHA Banner: "Shadow you've got some nuts for this one." This sounds like it could have been produced by any dirty south producer, although it has some of those Shadow background touches. Interesting juxtaposition, I guess. The rapping is stronger here, which is not really surprising.

7) Broken Levee Blues - this SUCKS. Go back to GUITAR CENTER.

8) Artifact - Holy shit, this is the best track so far. Shadow should make a whole album of this turntablist hardcore style.

9) Backstage Girl - Damn, the drums on this are actually really fucking good, but the guitars are so corny. Raps about groupies are always boring and this one is worse.

10) Triplicate - THIS NEXT ONE'S A HALF-HEARTED TOKEN GESTURE TO YOU FANS WHO ONLY BOUGHT THIS ALBUM BECAUSE OF ENDTRODUCING (zzzzzzzzzzzz although I do like some of the classical guitar playing)

11) The Tiger - UNKLE meets Rusted Root - a meeting that should never happen unless there are knives and bats involved. Gets kind of cool toward the end.

12) Erase You - Hot beat. But STOP FEATURING PEOPLE ALREADY. Actually I kind of like this, but it sounds like my iTunes just shuffled to a different album.

13) What Have I Done - OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD STOP!

14) You Made It - Uh, look dude, if you want to make a shitty Coldplay album, just make a shitty Coldplay album.

15) Enuff - My patience for this is really wearing thin

16) Dats My Part - Another decent beat but again with the corny rapping

17) 3 Freaks Remix - Ok, so you actually thought radio was going to be clamoring for ANOTHER version of this song?

18) Purple Grapes - One of the better beats, but he's just not a good rap producer. Not yet anyway.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 12 October 2006 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

"Artifact" just came up on my shuffle when I wasn't looking, and I thought it was some awesome post-punk record I didn't realize I had downloaded.
