New York Noise

The New York Noise series continues documenting the underground New York art/music scene from the 1980s. New York Noise 3 is an album of proto-electro/post-punk groups compiled by Stuart Algabright (who recorded in the 1980s as Dominatrix and The Voodooists). At the end of the year we will also be publishing our first book! New York Noise is an amazing book of photographs and diary of the New York art and music scene of this period all taken by Paula Court.

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Thursday, 27 July 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh. Hopefully this will have less of an academic/SERIOUS-no-wave vibe than the second...

Telephonething (Telephonething), Thursday, 27 July 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

i don't hear 2 coming off as academic in the least.

what would prompt you to say that?

mark grebt (sanskrit), Thursday, 27 July 2006 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

The Rhys Chatham and Sonic Youth tracks struck me as kind of dry, I guess.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

that rhys chatham track shreds! i thought you might bring up rhys or red transistor.. i don't know if i'd say the sonic youth cut is an academic choice, but yeah, it feels forced in there like an ill-fitting puzzle piece.

mark grebt (sanskrit), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

red transistor? the least academic thing on there.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

"soooooooo art-skool"

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:21 (nineteen years ago)

oh and a punch in the face. one of those guys might punch you in the face.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

might really show you who's the boss, when he makes your face a total loss

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

I love how this music with "no commercial potential" is now Soul Jazz's prized cash cow of the past few years.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

Scroggins making money like Barry White

mark grebt (sanskrit), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

Now Lydia Lunch can get that pool she's always wanted.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, Michael, I suggest you locate a thread I've just promoted from the depths of time to about 20th place on the 'New Answers' list. There's two of us now, ergo twice the challenge... :)

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 28 July 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ike Yard reissue should come out August 22nd.

Check out today's Listed segment over at Dusted for some selections from Ike Yard's Stuart Argabright:

That Cluster album has had a big impact on me as well.

Ike Yard's Stuart and Michael were on WNYU's New Afternoon Show wednesday playing some nice tunes. If you want to keep informed about this and other stuff, please sign up for the Acute Records mailing list, to do so just send me your email address.

I don't remember exactly what's on NY Noise 3 though we discussed this on the NY Noise 2 thread, I think. Ut, imPLOG, maybe some Judy Nylon?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

mango selassie (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently so.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

implog! was don christensen from the contortions with assistance from jody harris. they made one 12" (holland tunnel dive) and one 7" (breakfast / sea creatures). both records are immense.

dark day

-- mango selassie (teenagequie...), September 19th, 2006.

Robin Crutchfield's the name

Judy Nylon came down and played at DC Space way back when but I missed the show. Stuart Argabright is from DC I think (this info is for Zack/teenage quiet since he's in the DC area too).

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

Stuart is from DC, played in the Rudiments, who appear on the 30 seconds over DC comp.

The Ike Yard on WFMU thing was last monday.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:44 (nineteen years ago)
