Uffie vs. Paris Hilton vs. Lily Allen

Uffie for real music
Lily for spoilt-child kudos
Paris for splitting the difference and coming out strangely normal...

something looks wrong here :/

fandango (fandango), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

haven't heard uffie. the Paris Hilton song is a note-for-note cover of 'Kingston Town' with different lyrics. Sounds like a Reggae-Pop revival is the order of the day for this summer, similar to 1993. My antidote to Paris Hilton and the no-doubt obligatory wheeling-out of Ragga-Lite superstar Shaggy, not to mention comeback number 213 for Peter Andre, is the Lily Allen album which is very nice forward-thinking pop.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

forward-thinking

drugs? on the internet? i'm shocked.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

paris hilton >>>>>>> uffie >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> lallen

(uffie has one vg song and is funny; lallen is really bad; paris is amazing and everything i ever wished for in a popstar)

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

lallen forward-thinking???!!!!!!

NONE of them are particularly fwd-thinking though i guess paris's album probably won't be all cod-reggae.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Screwed will be on the album for starters

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah ? at last !
somehow, i'm pretty excited by this album (uffie : never heard, laalen : couldn't care less)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Lex has the sequence down.

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to take the "indie kid" and "rockist" approach to Paris Hilton and say that her single is "shit".

But I'd rather listen to it than another fucking Lily Allen song again.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ The Unstoppable Troll Machine (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

you're talking about the latest one or "screwed" ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Um, both. The latest one is slightly more tolerable mind you.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ The Unstoppable Troll Machine (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

how is lily allen NOT forward thinking?? seriously? who sounds like this?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_ska

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

oh come on. like she sounds like fucking toots and the maytals or the specials. just because there's a ska reference in there doesn't make it any less original or forward thinking.

You pop snobs are the worst!!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

lallen is not the future.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

lallen sounds like the ordinary boys, for one.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

maybe not, but then you can't predict the future. doesn't mean it isn't forward-thinking pop. i haven't felt this excited in something like this since the streets debut. and all these people going on about how she is false and girls aloud is real (or whatever) are as bad as the rockists they witch-hunt all day long whilst expousing their own brand of tossed-off drivel.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

paris's single (the new one) is whatever on a musical level - the reason it is so great is because the lyrics, and paris's delivery of them, are extremely moving and exquisitely performed.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

she sounds like she muttered them whilst passed out in a bucket of her own sick.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but the streets debut was a FALSE DAWN, look what he turned into :(

real as in "i write my own songs" vs real as in "i have lived my songs"? lallen is one but not the other. girls aloud are one but not the other.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair, The Ordinary Boys are flat-out unlistenable as with Lily Allen it takes a couple of plays before concluding that it's really shit.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ The Unstoppable Troll Machine (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

she sounds like she muttered them whilst passed out in a bucket of her own sick.

she doesn't, she sounds clear-headed and infinitely hopeful, but i hope there is a song on the album which does sound like this, it sounds awesome

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

What the fuck is "original or forward-thinking" with regard to the catchiness of la-la choons? And why is futurism the only valid aesthetic?

Complacency can be stultifying, but the pursuit of future shock for its own sake is a dead end. Novelty is vastly overrated by people who enjoy cocaine...

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

the lex, who said that you have to sing about what you know about? that's like going up to arnold schwarzenegger and calling him a big phoney because he's never really given birth to a kid, or been turned into a cyborg and yet he acted both roles. and what have girls aloud sung about that's so real? i'm not a fan but isn't it a bit rich to call your song "sound of the underground" when your band was carefully and clinically combined on-air over many many weeks in front of a crowd of millions? how is this different from what lily allen sings? what exactly does lallen sing about that people find so fake?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

why do people keep saying 'lallen'?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Uffie is a better rapper than MIA.

Lex is sounding like a Katie Melua fan...

fandango (fandango), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

I think generally originality is a fairly important factor in music. and it's only because everyone was "Lily Allen is forward-thinking? BWAHAHA! Pity the indie boy! I'm off to listen to some dipstick-whorebag do karaoke to UB40 and get excited about which chart position the latest faceless sensation's going to get to. Titter, what a penis."

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

xpost So you don't have to remember how many ls are in her first name.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think Lily Allen's fake, but I think she's a bit horrible & mean spirited... hopefully her gran can live long enough to come back with a response song called "haha u have cirrosis and your septum fell out".

fandango (fandango), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

I have absolutely no interest in the Lily Allen album based on the songs I've heard but I'm at least willing to give her the benefit of the doubt--she's still a developing artist and if she doesn't go down the respectability route her next stuff could be real good. I can't help noticing that the things Brits are saying about her are very very similar to the things Americans were saying about Paris 4 years ago. (Before we all decided to ignore her in hopes she'd go away.) Paris definitely wins, though.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

but cocaine is so cheap nowadays !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

not cheap enough :(

excitable kids who've just moved to the city => c-list slebs with self-awareness - and it works spectacularly well.

i'm not a fan but isn't it a bit rich to call your song "sound of the underground" when your band was carefully and clinically combined on-air over many many weeks in front of a crowd of millions?

no that was brilliant and utterly amazing chutzpah.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm, but still too expensive... Bring me back some when we have our Paris listening party, ok?

xp

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

Wogan:

Gotcha. And I agree. I don't care for Lily Allen, but that's only 'cuz her songs started sounding boring to me after about a week. Don't give a rat's ass about whether or not she's forward-thinking.

Fandango:

Man, that'd be such a great song.

Finally:

While I'd really love to loathe the (utterly disposable) Paris tune, it seems like the most natural, honest, likeable and efforlessly successful pop tone of the poly-product offerings on display in this thread. Honest and contrived? Yeah, and I don't see any contradiction there. It's not genius, hell it ain't even "The Tide Is High", but you could do a hell of a lot worse...

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

where did the first half go? where? basically: i don't care that lallen's fake, but she is, but she gets praise for her realness by people who'll dismiss eg paris hilton for their fakeness in the same breath. this irks me.

re: why ga are real - xenomania have carefully tailored ga's lyrics to fit in with where the band are at in their lives/career. the first album is basically an extended howl of rage and provincial ennui disguised as pure pink bubblegum. second album, they've got out of their provincial shitholes and have moved to the city, and so on.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

there is a Lily Allen thread already you know!

ILM lately seems to consist mainly of a series of threads in search of a thread that can contain every ILM hot-button issue ever, and I welcome this thread as a step towards that eventual utopia.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

xenomania have carefully tailored ga's lyrics

correction: xenomania have carefully thrown a bunch of terms and expressions into a tombola and plucked them out at random and stitched them together for the girls to read so that little if any sense is made ultimately

(i don't have a big problem with this considering the abysmal lyricism happening everywhere else tho)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

well, the Paris listening party should take place in... Paris !
Will you spend some time in town in august, by the way ? that would be the perfect timing...

So a massive pop-factory have told the band that they need to make a "look at us now we're famous" album? how is that more real than lily singing about riding around on a bike or getting nostalgic about her ex? i think the fact a lot of people find her lyrics a bit nasty is proof yet of her humility and honesty. There's a bit of self-knowingness that Lily can be a bit of a jerk sometimes and that comes through in her lyrics. And I don't believe that any of her lyrics try to make great claims to a poor background or a rough lifestyle. Even the accent thing - in this day and age you can still be posh and have a Souht London accent, it's not a crime. Or would you prefer if she sang about how nice and posh she was in a toffee-nosed lilt?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 28 July 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

But, and this is the point I wish I'd have included in my review, Lallen's asshole persona isn't CAPTIVATING. She's not GG Allin or Too Short or even Adam Green, where the point is they're an asshole and that's what makes the music, she's just UNPLEASANT.
