do like how an american record has a big hole or do you think it makes sense to just keep small holes on the records of seven inches..

Fjord Spellman (fjord), Saturday, 29 July 2006 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

I like small holes.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 29 July 2006 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

Mostly because it's easier t switch between 7'' and 12'', and you don't have to bother with that stopper thing...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 29 July 2006 03:32 (nineteen years ago)

big hole was for jukeboxes originally, wasn't it?

small holes rule.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Saturday, 29 July 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

the anti-anti-ilm backlash will make this not worth complaining about, won't it?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Saturday, 29 July 2006 03:47 (nineteen years ago)

a lot of hardcore and punk 7" have the small hole.

Pop Ryan (Rebelwordsmith), Saturday, 29 July 2006 05:51 (nineteen years ago)

Big holes are bigger and therefore better.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 29 July 2006 06:21 (nineteen years ago)

You know, fuck 7 inches either way, man. I was just thinking today about how there are some people in this world who are crazy about the idea of 7" singles, and how I've always felt "fuck that shit bro'" cause I'd rather have that shit compiled on a much longer CD than just one song on one side and one song on the other. Big deal.

I Do Not Play Baseball With Rabbits (Bimble...), Saturday, 29 July 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think it's that big a deal either way, man.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 29 July 2006 08:40 (nineteen years ago)

Well I complained on the abe simpson crotchety old man thread that you couldn't just go into a shop and buy one of those things to put in the middle anymore, so yeah small hole.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 29 July 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

That's cuz they give that shit away for free, man.

nancyboy (nancyboy), Saturday, 29 July 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

I had to buy adaptors to play those big holed 7" singles. Annoying!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 29 July 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

if it's an mp3, the little hole please

john w. hoppin (john hoppin), Saturday, 29 July 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

allegedly-ex vinyl fetishist speaks: Also those with small holes LOOK great when in the nude out of their cover. There's something simultaneously stylish and cute about them, esp when the label is custom-made, not just some fugly record-company logo or something. Big hole -> they look damaged, 12"ers -> aesthetically imbalanced, too much black.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 29 July 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

"Do you want me to play the record, Frank?"
"No, I want you to FUCK IT!"

small hole.

With most artists I'd much rather have 45s than a long-ass CD, though. I wish more artists (especially soul & pop) still made 45s. I know a lot of grotty indie bands do, but that doesn't help me out much. Most artists just can't hold it together for a full album.

Plus 45s are dead sexy, whatever size the hole.

"cut your own hole"

unnamedroffler (xave), Saturday, 29 July 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

SMALLER HOLE MEANS IT IS NORMALLY THICKER AND MORE DELICIOUS VINYL. WATCH FOR THE SMALLER HOLE, and FEEL THE THICK VINYL IN YOUR HEART.

now we are talking!!! which one do YOU pick if you are the choice maker?! Hmmm?

Fjord Spellman (fjord), Sunday, 30 July 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Big hole, if that's the way it came; little hole, if that's the way it came.

So Ho La (So Ho La), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

Large holes make it easier to carry around a handful of 'em from points A to B. (Unless you've got one of those gay-ass little lunchbox-size carrying cases, in which case it's moot.)

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

ha, twice in the last 10 days i've seen people wearing record spider designs as decoration - once as a pendant, once on a t-shirt.

last two 7"s i've bought, only 2 this year as it happens, have both had large holes.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

it used to be slightly cheaper to use the big hole when manufacturing (less vinyl after all). i've always wanted to do a big hole on a 12" but i think the record would warp.

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

small hole = BUMBACLOT

heavyweight grebt (sanskrit), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

Small hole with vents & push-out centre, please.

harvey.w (harvey.w), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

I quite like the big hole records but it was a right pain when I somehow lost the adapter, I made a temporary one out of cardboard, but that didn't work all that well :P

Took me a while to find somewhere that sold them - asked in a couple of DJ shops - no luck. Eventually I got one in Reckless Records on Berwick St.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

my motor skills are horrible, so the big hole has always been a godsend when djing. easier to hold by the middle, rather than the outside edge of the record.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

On my dad's old stereo you could stack a bunch big hole singles on a tower-like adapter that would drop them one at a time when the auto-return arm went back, so that was cool for programming analog party mixes.

BrianB (BrianB), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

Harvey.W makes a fine point, here, though. It's the coolest thing ever when you get one of those.
