So I'm planning to make a list of Best Hip Hop Singles of the 00's for my blog. Any recommendation? So far I can only think of Jay-Z, Missy, Kanye, Dre, Dizzee, Streets, Lady Sov, etc. Do you think it's too mainstream?

Thanks

Why not instead make the list "My favorite Hip Hop singles of the 00's" and not worry about those questions?

DougD (DougD), Saturday, 29 July 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

Do you think it's too mainstream?

yes. not much point just listing a bunch of songs lots of people will already know, is there?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 29 July 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

No, actually the point of the list is a middle finger for my elitist anti-hip hop friends. So putting Cannibal Ox there won't shock them compared to 50 Cent. So, what's your favorite mainstream hip hop singles of the 00's?

Aditya (dan138zig), Saturday, 29 July 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

"Jarbleflux Impeach der Cables of Babylon" by The Blip Junkies.
It's on one of those Now TWICM comps. Number 452, I believe.

Here's some of my faves from the 00's:

AZ feat. Nas: "The Essence"
Eve: "Who's That Girl?"
Gnarls Barkley: "Crazy" (it's not rap, but does it count as hip-hop?)
Snoop feat. Pharrell: "Drop It Like It's Hot"
M.O.P: "Ante Up"
Jadakiss feat. Ronald Isley: "Big Business"
Nate Dogg feat. Fabolous, B.R.E.T.T. & Kurupt: "I Got Love"
Nas: "One Mic"
Spooks: "Things I've Seen"
Canibus: "No Return"

"Hey Ma" and "Ms. Jackson."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 29 July 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Gnarls Barkley... I mean, that song could get play on smooth jazz stations. Which isn't a bad thing per se, but its sound is not hip-hop or rap, in my opinion. More r& b.

trees (treesessplode), Saturday, 29 July 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Gnarls Barkley gets quite a bit of airplay on the soft rock station here. Oh, and "My Block" by Scarface...

Tape Store (Tape Store), Saturday, 29 July 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

uh, put some 'off' g-unit in there like the game or the dude from nashville but something that 50 is on, tell me when to go, i think 'beautiful' is better than drop it like its hot, if you are looking to piss of your backpacker friends

what about freeway

john w. hoppin (john hoppin), Saturday, 29 July 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Gnarls Barkley: "Crazy"

That song is a killer. But I don't think it'd fit on a hip hop list. Thanks for all who suggested. Great call on Outkast. I forgot about them :)

Why not instead make the list "My favorite Hip Hop singles of the 00's" and not worry about those questions?

I am convinced that if people renamed any and all "Best ____ in Music" lists "My Favorite ___ in Music" it would remove so much nonsense and trouble making and probably even make the lists better.

Cunga (Cunga), Sunday, 30 July 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

Or, alternatively, people could just assume that's what the list makers meant in the first place. Like when a site makes "Generic Music Site's Top 100 Albums of the 80s" isn't that the same thing as saying 'Generic Music Site's Favorite Albums of the 80's"?

ivan tasev (Ivan T), Sunday, 30 July 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

Ludacris - Southern Hospitality
Ludacris - Saturday (Oooh Oooh!)
Talib Kweli - Get By

The thing is, reader will pay attention more if the list named "best", not "favorite". And I'm sure that by "best", most people mean "personal best".

Cunninlynguists - Seasons feat. Masta Ace

Released as a single? Should be on it no matter what though.

All of Kanye West's singles so far are classics in the strongest sense of that word, with the exception of "Slow Jamz" which is merely good. Here's the list, taken from Wikipedia:
-Slow Jamz
-Through the Wire
-All Falls Down
-New Work Out Plan
-Diamonds from Sierra Leone
-Gold Digger
-Heard Em Say
-Touch the Sky
-Drive Slow
Throw in his work with Common, Jay-Z, Talib Kweli and a whole slew of others, and it becomes clear that West is the premier hip-hop singles artist of the 00s (and possibly the best album-artist also, but that's debatable.)

Outkast has had some great singles too:
-B.O.B.
-Ms. Jackson
-So Fresh, So Clean
-Hey Ya
-Way You Move

Eminem probably belongs on here too, but his singles are usually the weakest part of his catalog for some reason. Some exceptions are "Cleaning out my closet" and "The Way I Am."

graf cycliz (graf cycliz), Monday, 31 July 2006 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

On second thought, I didn't limit to singles. For example, I put Kanye's "Hey Mama" on the 6th spot.
