new califone album...opinions?

i think that if they left the fisrt 2 tracks out, it would be just about perfect!...when i first heard it (starting from the beginning, of course), i thought i was going to be really disappointed...then track 3 kicked-in, and i found some relief that i would actually like some of this album...but it didn't disappoint me from that point on!

so what do ya'll think?...

I bet you a dollar its boring.

christopherscottknudsen (christopherscottknudsen), Sunday, 30 July 2006 06:29 (nineteen years ago)

the album or yr comment?

robert anderson (venimdenim), Sunday, 30 July 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
It isn't boring. It's probably one of the more interestring-sounding records released this year. All those found-sound elements rattle through the songs, but -- unlike their last album, King Heron Blues -- those elements don't sink (or come at the expense of) the melodies. Roots & Crowns is great on headphones.

The first two tracks are some of my favorites on the record.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 13 October 2006 06:32 (nineteen years ago)

Califone is terribly underrated, despite critical acclaim (even a couple of Pitchfork "Best New Music" accolades.) After several listens, I'd say Roots & Crowns is their most consistent release. I still have a major crush on Roomsound, but their sound has most definitely developed a great deal since then.

I'm a big fan of secret weapon Brian Deck - he's a fantastic sound sorcerer.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 13 October 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

I think the album's great. Very '70s Eno at time, at least "Another Green World" and "Before and After Science," vintage. Plus the usual folk and blues stuff.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 13 October 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

i love it. sadly I bet even pitchfork's best new music label wont do much for them. and honestly I don't know why.

they aren't underrated, critics love them. they just are publicly loved all that much for whatever reason

boonah (boonah), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Does seem a little weird that, after putting out a number of v. good records since the late '90s, they still haven't really broken through with the indie rock crowd. Not sure what the sales numbers are, but I'm guessing pretty low considering they've toured w/ Modest Mouse and Isaac Brock loves them & their style of music generally continues to be popular w/ the indie rock audience. Seems like a lot of people who like Wilco would enjoy Califone.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

while I love both albums, I don't see why Yellow House is getting 100 x the amount of attention Califone's latest is.

Both are top 5 of year for me, but equally great if you ask me. I didn't even know they toured with heavy weights Modest Mouse, now I'm even more confused

boonah (boonah), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

ps. loved your review of YH by the way mark

boonah (boonah), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

i like this record, despite not being a huge califone fan. maybe it's the vocals that puts people off?

All My Friends Are Funeral Singers sounds like a step up from their previous albums. However, my opinion of Califone hasn't changed for the better. Since there isn't really many hard/bopping beats, riffs, or jams I end up getting bored. This poses a question to me: if I get bored from Califone why don't I get bored from other loungey music that I like? I will have to update this post when I think of a reason.

The instrumentation is pretty great on the new album. My favorite song from first listen is Krill.

I was listening to Red Red Meat in the car last night. I particularly remember driving home with 'Lather' on and it was awesome.

I made it through the first 3-4 songs on the new one (you're right -- the instrumentation is gorgeous) but then ended up putting on the new Raekwon/Ghostface joint instead. I think Califone are best had in small doses, perhaps?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 9 October 2009 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

Or maybe the albums just take a lot of time/patience to sink in.

My favorite thing of theirs is the compilation CD of their first two EPs.

Califone fucking rule and fuiud

xp most of the songs on those eps were on the unreleased red red meat & tim rutili demos I found on slsk

At first I would get annoyed at Califone's noodling. Like they were just kind of bored themselves. I got over that though and now I love the atmosphere they create on their albums.

Evan, Friday, 9 October 2009 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

I'm liking this more. It does take additional listening. There is definitely many non-boring moments on this album even if it's just a really good psychedelic trance or exceptionally cozy outdoorsy loungy feeling.

Paste Magazine gave it a 85.

"bells break arms" is glorious, reminds me a little of bunny gets paid

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 14 August 2013 14:11 (twelve years ago)

Love this band. They sound so very grounded, so of the earth and its forms (and sounds), and at the same time very fleeting and hard to firmly hold on to. Physical in an abstract way, if that makes any sense at all?

The Loftus-record, i.e. the collarboration with Rex, just got rereleased by the way.

Mule, Wednesday, 14 August 2013 14:17 (twelve years ago)

Ahhh, "Bells Break Arms" is really lovely! I got an "Another Green World"-feel from the drones. Looking forward to this.

Noone seems to give a shit about Califone around here. Makes me sad. The new one sounds very good.

Mule, Monday, 16 September 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

I like it a lot, too. "Magdalene" is so, so great. It's sorta weird that Califone doesn't get the respect they deserve. I mean, they were like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: The Band before Yankee Hotel Foxtrot existed.

I'd love to see them. They're rarely in Europe, never in Scandinavia, I think. I'll have to go abroad to see them, I guess.

Ha! This is great! I live in Oslo, though, and wonder why the hell they're going to Stavanger of all places. Might go Gothenburg, however.

new album is indeed really good

Wow, thanks for the heads up. For some reason I thought they were kind of on hiatus (at the least), because they either all lived in different places or simply couldn't afford to keep the band a going concern. Maybe both?

I love these lads they are properly Blue
