Music in Paris...

I'm gonna be in Paris at the beginning of August. Anyone know what's on Concert-wise or where would be a good place to see some interesting/strange hip-hop/electronica/indie pop. Preferably by French artists?

Please, my boyfriend organised everything else and I promised I would figure out the music and I'm finding it really hard.

there's a place called 'instant chavires' off the robespierre metro stop right outside of the city that always has some free jazz/noise shows between bigger named acts like Deerhoof.

nouveau casino has slightly bigger names than chavires (sonic youth played there recently) but they've got something going on most nights of the week.

fleche d'or ("golden arrow," pun intended) is in the 20th arr. near the gambetta stop. it's more of a "rock" club. lots of cocaine and french teen-agers making out.

for not obnoxious techno-ish things check out le tryptique.

and if you want to go to my favorite bar of all time (i went there 3 - 4 times a week when i lived there), go to POP-IN on rue amelot right by metro: st. sebastian-froissart. they have a myspace profile that lists a bunch of shows/events).. also check out planete mars on rue keller off of rue roquette. everyone always rolls their eyes at a place called 'le trusquel' (sp?) near the grand boulevards stop, but everyone ends up there haha, so you should still check it out, but dont' go until late.

t'amuse bien!

Instants Chavirés has a site here - http://www.instantschavires.com/
But doesn't seem to have anything listed for August - might be worth checking out their links page, though.

Also, if you're into all that experimental stuff drop in to Bimbo Tower - http://bimbo.tower.free.fr/ - they're a great record shop, full of hard-to-come-by vinyl, cds, books and the like. They might also be able to point you in the direction of some good nights out, they seemed pretty clued up.

This is good stuff. I can't find that Myspace page though. Or maybe I did. I'm really confused by the one called pop in. Sounds good though.

Thanks, that was the one I found. It actually makes sense when you hang around on it for more than a second though, doesn't it. Ha! Excellent help. I'm still working on it.

did someone recommend les instants chavirés yet? it's an experimental music club in montreuil (off the robbespierre stop if i remember correctly) and they book a lot of interest people (though as much if not more international than french).

ok if i had read the thread properly i would have seen that someone mentioned l.i.c. already--consider this a second recommendation then.

Bump... any new updates or insights? Possibly some not-super-expensive restaurant recommendations? I'm bummed to see that Cluster will be playing at Nouveau Casino the night before I arrive, oh well. I seem to remember reading a thread about used record shops in Paris but my search isn't turning anything up...

'le piano vache' right near the pantheon at rue laplace. the metro would be maubert, though you could walk easily enough from st. michel or the luxembourg rer station. great little bar that plays good (rock-based) music.

i used to hang out along rue oberkampf quite a lot. lots of trendy, but cool bars and cafes along that stretch. get off at the parmentier metro station and check it out.

there is a really fucking good restaurant/bar style thing in belleville, where the food is awesome and pas forcement tres cher. can't remember its name, though.

in bastille, there is good old rue de lappe. it's basically a stretch of bars, i'm sure you know it.

pigalle is an underrated spot as well, during the day. some of the best cafes i've been to in paris, and a great place to chill.

venues...la boule noire, le tryptique, um... nouveau casino is oberkampf anyway, right...

i like bercy village to catch a movie. much prefer it to that sterile shopping centre-esque wasteland with the movie complex in les halles. not that i hate les halles or anything, it's generally a good spot.

re: restaurants

there's a cous-cous place off the ménilmontant stop (line 2) called TAIS. on friday nights, if you order a drink, you get an entire cous-cous meal for free.

i couldn't afford to dine out much when i lived there., but this place is pretty good, especially for vegetarians.

there's an incredible restaurant near the Picasso museum, but I can't remember its name. real local. looking at a google map, i think it's on the corner of Rue st. Gilles and and Rue des Tournelles... i'll try to remember the name.

otherwise, the best way to eat paris is the prix fixe lunch. you can get a three course meal at a *nice* restaurant for 12 euros or less.

i'll try to come up with some more names places..

The Djoon club has become deep house central. I'll be visiting shortly...

that sounds cool

i like the parisian clubs which are more about music and the love of the music. less about posing and posturing.

Nemo Festival. This year's has already taken place, but it may be worth looking into for next year. Can't find an official website for it and I don't know anything about it other than Jon Hopkins played there a couple of weeks ago, so I'm guessing it's some sort of electronica/dance event.

Also, T.I.M.E. Festival took place last November. Not sure if it's an annual thing though.
