OPO: Cure cover

I am making a mix for a friend (and likely a copy for myself) of good covers of Cure songs. Maybe ILM has heard some that I haven't. Go.

And I pre-emptively veto Dinosaur Jr.

There's been a couple of really good Spanish language covers over time but I can never remember the band names. One was this lovely flamenco-inspired revamp of "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep."

My two favorite covers are probably A Perfect Circle's live mashup of "Lovesong" with Ozzy's "Diary of a Madman" and Misery Loves Co.'s loud as hell take on "The Drowning Man," but there are others.

Sorry, no, it's Dino Jr's "Just Like Heaven" (which is better than the original, but not by much).

I think I've never heard a Cure cover I've been entirlely satisfied with, but Tricky's Lovecats is alright.

Nouvelle Vague - 'A Forest'

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

for reference: a couple of Cure tribute albums here.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

I have to agree with milo out of contrarianism

whatever you do, stay far away from the Dismemberment Plan cover of "Close to Me". lands squarely in the "failed experiment" category.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

Funny how there aren't that many Cure covers around (apart from the Cleopatra tribute stuff)

Really like the EPIC doom/dirge pseudo-blackmetal version of "Siamese Twins" that closes (the vinyl version of) Ocean's recent Here Where Nothing Grows. Twenty-some minutes of frozen, melodic despair. Very faithful, really, to the feel of Pornography, if not its sound.

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

I like 311's "Lovesong". Sorry.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

I am deeply concerned.

justin timberlake - "like i love you"

;)

Or Hollertronix mashing the music of "Close to You" with the vocals from "Drop It Like It's Hot." I'm stupid enough to still dig that.

There's a tune on Sufjan Stevens' Illinois where the quasi-serialist string section breaks into a note-perfect quote of "Close to You" for a couple bars. Can't for the life of me remember what song it is, though...

Oh, and "Close to You" gets dropped into Mutamassik's mix on the split DJ /rupture vs. Mutamassik" CD. Somewhere near the end...

This is disappointing. I guess maybe I assumed there were more decent Cure covers than I thought.

I'd never heard Tricky's "Lovecats" before, though. It's nice.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

I like "10:15 Saturday Night" by The Living End...

willem -- (willem), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

Covering teh Cure is a lot like covering Prince - nearly impossible at best.

I'm trying to OPO, but I think this is more like OP0.

I had Flux Flow Clan's "Fascination Street" on repeat for several weeks this summer.

mikef (mfleming), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

everything up through kiss me, kiss me, kiss me relies so much on Robert's voice.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 07:02 (nineteen years ago)

riton does a nice version of "killing an arab" and also check Victor Malloy doing "boy's don't cry" on tom middleton's cosmosonica covers compilation

Dart - "A Few Hours After This"

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Tara Jane O'neil do 10:15 Saturday Night at a show and I thought it was great. I don't know if she ever recorded it, though.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

Well I wouldn't call it my OPO but the cover of "The Figurehead" by Nebelhexe on her new album is pretty good -- music's a near total xerox, some instrumental differences aside, but her singing style is notably different from Robert's.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 22 July 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Goldfinger's "Just Like Heaven" is pretty damn awesome pop punk.

Trayce, Monday, 23 July 2007 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

Everything by The Essence.

flowersdie, Monday, 23 July 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)
