Faith/Pornography/Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me/Disintegration/Wish (delete where applicable)

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

dan you really think wish holds up to those other four?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I do. The only album I would hesitate to recommend would be Wild Mood Swings.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Wish really is spectacular. The reissues of that and Disintegration can't come soon enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

so you're telling me that if forced to pick between wish and disintegration or wish and pornography 50 times out of 100 you're taking wish?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Lex hate is disproportionate to CIF hate. Ergo you (we?) are all CIFs.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

I would like people to stop talking about The Cure.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

so you're telling me that if forced to pick between wish and disintegration or wish and pornography 50 times out of 100 you're taking wish?

Who are you, Monty Hall?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'll give you twenty dollars for a hard boiled egg.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

I am conflicted because I want more people to talk about more music* on ILM instead of yet another 'ILM readers bitching about ILM' thread (unless this is how it gets made better which I'm prepared to consider as an option), but otoh I am grateful to cutty for not just sticking this on the Noise Board.

*except The Cure

Steve M is making me contemplate starting 45 new Cure threads tomorrow.

so you're telling me that if forced to pick between wish and disintegration or wish and pornography 50 times out of 100 you're taking wish?

No. All three of those albums appeal to different things and aren't directly comparable; furthermore, different albums can work as better gateways into the band than others (I think The Top is BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT but I would NEVER recommend it to someone as a first Cure album).

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Last panel -- Stevem, Nicole (on phone), Dan.

I would like things to be better on ILM as well.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

Louis Jagger aside, ILM's been the most readable it has for ages these past weeks.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 July 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

Setting aside Dom's point (largely because I don't agree or disagree with it; I don't have an opinion on ILM's readability), ILM would be a much better place if people could do two things:

1) Dissasociate themselves from criticism of their favorite bands.
2) Stop whining that people like and are talking about music that they don't like and don't want to talk about.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 July 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

I would say Italo but then so many threads would lie fallow.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 31 July 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Without ILM I never woulda heard of Italo. And I really like what I've heard so far.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 July 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

OK I guess I am just being kind of perverse. And this realization is making me wonder if I really want to say "Jess - dnb" or not.

Oh wait yes I do.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

anyone about the Hold Steady

timmy tannin (pompous), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

The Head In The Door as well, surely? WMS is irredeemable gash although OTM about The Top, even if the dude was off his face and suicidal while recording it. Wish has my favourite individual Cure song, End, but the rest IMO isn't so brilliant (From The Edge... and Open aside).

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

I want tynan delong to talk MORE about 'electrosoul'!

timmy tannin OTM

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

In response to what you said Ned, I've got one Bob Drake, but that was ages before I joined, someone said something about him hitting the hard parts of Song Cycle way harder than Animal Collective or something. And the stuff I've gotten on my limited budget is pretty impressive.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'm conflicted about The Head On The Door. It's a really good album but I really, really, really dislike "Push" to the point where it angers me that other people like it so much, ergo I tend to completely ignore that album so that I don't have to think about that song's existence. Most of the time I pretend the other 9 songs are rarities that sprang fully-formed from the ether.

Wish has only one song on it where I can see an argument for it being dubious ("Wendy Time") but the other songs on the album (esp. the three you mentioned, "High", "Apart", "To Wish Impossible Things" and "Cut") more than make up for it. Also, as a package, "High"/"This Twilight Garden"/"Play" is very close to being the strongest single they ever released (only "Close To Me"/"A Man Inside My Mouth"/"Stop Dead", "Inbetween Days"/"The Exploding Boy"/"A Few Hours After This" and "Catch"/"Breathe"/"A Chain Of Flowers" are credible contenders).

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

fascinating!

Zwan (miccio), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

anthony miccio - limp bizkit

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't we do a "what band do you associate with what poster?" thread before?

Zwan (miccio), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

Dom Passantino - The Rakes, Art Brut

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

And the stuff I've gotten on my limited budget is pretty impressive.

Good deal, sir. :-)

Dan's argument about Wish extremely to the point. "Wendy Time" is weirdly clunky but nearly everything else flows excellently, and the version of "To Wish Impossible Things" from the Show videotape (not on the album, alas) is stunning.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

so you're telling me that if forced to pick between wish and disintegration or wish and pornography 50 times out of 100 you're taking wish?

-- j blount (jamesbloun...), July 31st, 2006.

i would go with wish over pornography 95 times out of 100. one of the most overrated records ever. I was 15, too, once and it was teh shit - but no more!

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

Pornography has "The Hanging Garden", "Siamese Twins" and "A Strange Day" on it = it is impossible to overrate Pornography.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

x-post -- I dunno, heard the remastered version at all? All of a sudden I *really* loved that album (me being more of a Faith fan in general).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

(Somewhere Jess is despairing, not realizing his Cure mention was the equivalent of a red flag to the bull.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

Jess know what he is doing

MOVE 'ZIG (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

If Jess hadn't used the word "homos" I would have cut'n'pasted him about 90 times by now.

Zwan (miccio), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't we do a "what band do you associate with what poster?" thread before?

this is different. like--i would never want gygax to stop talking about hisham.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

And DJ Martian on anything in connection with NME

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

If you'd done that, Anthony, I would have started making threads.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

And, quite frankly, if you're going to be a combative, presumptuous fuckface and tell me to stop talking about one of my favorite bands, even if you are joking, it's still really fucking annoying, stupid, childish, unfunny, and overall douchebaggy, and as such I will have as many civil conversations with other people about said band as I can because I know that on some level it's getting underneath your skin.

Much luv!

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

yow

you realize what thread this is, right?

Zwan (miccio), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, what a place to a) throw in tangential paragraphs about the Cure and b) flip a bitchswitch.

Zwan (miccio), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

cutty - his undying love of Tiga
