Pink Spiders

Saw they're one of Best Buy's loss leaders this week, and then went to Dallas BBQ and saw a girl in full Pink Spiders getup--band t-shirt plus liberally-applied pink eye shadow and a pink drink umbrella in her animae'd-up blonde hair. But hadn't actually really heard of them before. Their Myspace page (which makes me want to kill--ow, ow, ow) has some songs that, although the Spiders themselves appear pretty clearly to be a new wave band, sound basically like Bowling For Soup but way less lyrically inventive. But maybe I'm missing something? Are these guys actually popular or am I just being street-team'd?

Alternately, we could discuss the mismatch between their image and their sound and talk about the weird intersections of modern youth culture--like a whole corner of the 80s in different countries thrown into a randomizer.

It's true, if something is being marketed, it's not worthy of discussion.

i work in marketing, doofus.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 31 July 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

hua hua.

i'd never heard of them. but i sure got a chuckle out their band description:

The Pink Spiders' new album Teenage Graffiti is a fevered, luminous record of rock ā€˜n’ roll escapades. Their brand of rock 'n' roll is infused with undeniable energy and classic pop sheen, delivered with a defiant 'tude.

fevered and luminous? huzzah!
infused with undeniable energy? "Dammit Josh, don't even try to deny that the spides got energy. They're like, infused with it and shit."

x-post:

I've been blinded by their defiant 'tude.

I've been blinded by their defiant 'tude.

it could have easily been their classic pop sheen that blinded you too...i hear it is both fevered and luminous.
