I don't even get why these guys deserve a thread, honestly. I mean I don't see much difference between this and when a shitty rock band says "Bring back REAL Rock and Roll."

And folk was never a threat.

I don't even get why these guys deserve a thread, honestly.

Marmot mentioned/linked them elsewhere and wondered if they should have one -- I checked the evidence and insisted so. I am hateful.

Hey Dad, I'm An Anarchist (2004)
by: Evan Greer

do you remember naptimes how we'd lay down on that big old bed
just above the covers in the house we used to live in
and you'd been at work all day and so you were tired
so you never really noticed when i'd slip down to the floor
with tiny feet unsure
but steadied by the carpet fibers between my toes
i'd stumble to the door, peak my head and go
you woke up twelve years later and i was vandalizing signs
for luxury condominiums and politicians without spines
the next thing that you know i am calling you from jail
you know i would have loved you anyway if you hadn't post my bail
but i'm not sure if you realize all the tears that fell from my eyes
when you told me it was worthless those three days i spent in hell
and thought i knew that you were wrong
and though i proved it in a song
you made me feel weak when i needed to feel strong
you made me wonder if it was really just a game all along?
and i know it would make you happy if i'd just focus on my degree
put down my guitar and give up anarchy
come home every summer play the way other kids play
be happy getting' drunk each night and waitin' tables every day
but hey dad, i'm an anarchist
it's not a phase and it's not a disease
and though my hands are worn for my age
would you still hold one of them please?
i just want you to know that i love you
and i want you to love me too
right now i'm not sure where home is
but i'm sure there's room there for you
i want the same thing as every other homesick patched-up kid in this crowd
i want my dad to look at me; i want him to be proud.

"An eloquent and energetic writer. He reminds me of Phil Ochs."
--Howard Zinn, author of "A People's History of the United States"

"Evan's vocals are clear and definitive as he weaves a story around his concise guitar playing!"
--WERU-FM Radio, ME

"A rousing song ... propelled the protesters into action!"
--Student Life, Wash. U. St. Louis

"Suspect was seen walking across the Flagler Street Bridge with what appeared to be weapons concealed under his shirt."
--The Miami Police Department

"With little fanfare, there appeared this troubadour onstage, a tall, tousled fellow with a clear voice, a guitar, and a lot to say: This was Evan Greer, currently from Swarthmore, originally from Boston, and often found at activist rallies in DC, Miami, and Philadelphia. The young, eloquent songwriter has been compared to both Woodie Guthrie and Bob Dylan, tackling such subjects as liberals, unions and human foibles, stating his case in three minutes or less. He pulled out some very old songs, like The Wobblie's anthem, "Dump the Bosses Off Your Back," the classic "Keep on Truckin' Mama," and his own humorous version of a Phil Ochs tune he called "Love Me I'm A Liberal," as well as a choice sampling of his own material. He was accompanied by Sally O'Brien, whose sweet and gentle voice lilted nicely behind Evan's strong vocals. He closed with "Solidarity Forever" and a hearty Happy May Day."
--Cathy Miller in The Aquarian, May 2004

Song Conor Oberst Eat Your Heart Out [download]
Artist Tom Frampton
Album ...As Marion Delgado
This song is about heteronormativity.

You keep ( C ) running through my ( C ) brain
Like a (F) southbound (G ) train, Emily (C ) (F) (G)
And I try to be discrete
But I’m starting to lose sleep
Well I’m begging for you please, Emily

What I’d (C) do for one more (C) chance
Or (F) even half a (G) glance, Emily
And if I catch you by his side
I just might up and die
Oh to have you for my bride, Emily

(F) Maybe we’ll cross paths one day when I've (G) found somebody (C) new
(F) And late at night you’ll whisper that you (C) always loved me, (G) too
But till then I can’t abide
You done hurt my foolish pride
But every song I write, Emily, is for you

Tried to clear you from my head
Like you pushed me from your bed, Emily
But to my dismay
It’s getting harder everyday
Your scent never washed away, Emily

You took my heart in tact,
And now I want it back, Emily
You didn’t have to be so cruel
You said, “it’s not me, it’s you,”
Even though it wasn’t true, Emily

So I’ll see you in Pittsburgh, next time I’m traveling through
And maybe you’ll smile at me like you used to do
But till then I can’t abide
You done hurt my foolish pride
And I won’t whisper nothing back, except this song to you

Artist Tom Frampton
Album Making Folk a Threat, Again! vol. 1
another night i'm coming home without a shred of faith in anybody excepting, of course, for myself, and even there i've got my doubts we talked all night, and forced our lives and views on everybody but nothing seems to be moving anywhere, or have i just lost the route i'm feeling broke inside i choke a cry and hope to die what the hell am i doing here i think i wasted a whole year another fight another black eye turn your back and walk away sleepwalk though history and then you go and disappear all this despite the fact you said we'd never ever go astray but if elm city burns tonight i don't think i'd shed a tear [chorus] she calls me on the telephone she's been drunk for three weeks straight and her voice starts to quiver and my faith starts to shake and for all i fucking care why don't you drink yourself to death ‘cause after all that i've lost you know i'm all that i've got left the snowfall's white, there’s not a sound it covers all our old hypocrisies and with borders gone i've forgot which side i'm on you talk of rights as though we truly knew democracy but tonight i just can't buy it, tonight by ideals are long time gone

it's a funny song. i'm guessing he changed the lyrics to make it more current? references to the D.A.R. and hubert humphrey aren't gonna make much sense to a lot of people now.

Song Love Me I'm A Liberal [download]
Artist Evan Greer
Album Live on the DNC2RNC March

I trade Internet jokes about Dubya
They sure are funny to me.
But don’t even think about asking
Me to give up my new SUV
I don’t know what you mean about oil,
I just wish that gas could be free,
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal!

Well I’ve signed about a thousand petitions,
And my golf score is six under par.
I keep myself up on the issues
By listening to N.P.R.,
And you know that I’m changing the world
With these stickers all over my car!
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal!

Well you know that I’m not a racist
Been on the side of the blacks all along.
And I always give a few extra dollars
To the young man who mows my lawn!
And I’ve never read Emma Goldman
But I know that she must have been wrong!
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal!

I went to that pro-choice rally,
I think women should get equal pay.
But it’s sure nice that my wife cooks me dinner,
And puts my clean laundry away!
And maybe our country ain’t perfect,
But revolution is never the way.
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal!

You know I support Gay marriage,
And I want the environment clean.
But I’m too busy at work to take action,
So I’m just voting for Howard Dean.
I know we must work inside the system,
It’s the best one that I’ve ever seen!
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal!

I cheered when they caught Saddam
I knew that the news wouldn’t lie,
Thank god that the war is now over,
And my 401-K is on the rise!
Because you know that I love my country:
best democracy money can buy!
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal!

FUCK YOU and your money, too

Here’s to the army, navy, air force, and marines
And to all you masterminds who pull the puppet strings
FUCK YOU and your big guns, too

Here’s to all you terrorists, tearin’ up the whole world
Cutting all the forests down and poisoning the soil
FUCK YOU and your big machines, too

Here’s to corporate media, reportin’ on the scene
And to all you stars in Hollywood who make the silver screen
FUCK YOU and your nosejobs, too

Here’s to all you people who wouldn’t pick me up
Danglin’ my thumb out at your big ‘ole empty truck
FUCK YOU and your empty seats, too

Here’s to all you NGO’s, sendin’ me your mail
With a free gift plastic travel mug that’ll help to save the whales
FUCK YOU and your free gift, too

(campfire verse):
Here’s to all you secret agents, sittin’ round this fire
If you think we don’t know who you are, you might as well retire
FUCK YOU and Tom Ridge, too

Here’s to all you Wal-Marts pavin’ all our towns
Exploitin’ workers everywhere to keep your prices down
FUCK YOU and your smiley face, too

(the humanure verse, collectively written by JED):
Here’s to all you sewer systems and you septic tanks
And to all you porta-potties all lined up in ranks
FUCK YOU, you’re wastin’ our poo

(verse by Fetus):
Here’s to all you supermarkets, we think you’re really rude
We’re standin’ out here starving and your lockin’ up our food
FUCK YOU and your trash compactors, too

(verse by Quack,Bridge, and Devon):
Here’s to all you agribusiness, stealin’ all our seeds
Pushin’ the small farmers out with your corporate greed
FUCK YOU and your GMO’s, too

Here’s to all you police with your clubs and guns
And to all you riot cops, just havin’ a little fun
FUCK YOU and your tear gas, too

Here’s to all you lawyers, you judges and you courts
Throwin’ us all in jail like it was some new fancy sport
FUCK YOU and your lawbooks, too

Here’s to all you governments and all you nation-states
And to all you worthless bureaucrats deciding all our fates
FUCK YOU and your elections, too

Here’s to America, land of the free
Fuckin’ over everybody else to preserve your liberty
FUCK YOU and the red, white, and blue

Here’s to all you fascists the whole wide world around
Tryin’ to build your kingdoms up and tear our futures down
FUCK YOU, your time is through
FUCK YOU, your time is through!

Tom Morello Meets Riot Folk

Before his gig last night at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC, Tom Morello of Audioslave stopped by Times Up on the Lower East Side to meet and jam with the Riot Folk Collective. Riot is an amazing bunch of talented kids that are making folk a threat again. Great turn out and awesome performances made the evening a huge success. Tom was able to kick out a couple of cool Union songs after which Brenna, Mark, Ryan and Evan rocked the crowd. We all had a great time and special thanks to Tom and his friends for stopping by. It was so nice to meet all of you!

I was an anarchist, then I read a lot of Marx and realized that anarchism was just a bunch of middle class liberals playing Radicalism and that Marxism made WAY MORE SENSE (!). I then spent another two years as a hardline militant Marxist. Militant i.e. "I need to buy a gun and do weapons training for when the revolution comes."

That was a few years ago, though. These days I'm pretty politically apathetic. I can't point to anything specific that provoked the change, I just became less and less active.

These days guys like the Riot Folk Collective provoke mild nostalgia, some roffles, and incredulity that I ever considered music like this "inspiring."

Hard yes, but not actually impossible - http://greensource.construction.com/projects/0704_helena.asp

The Helena’s most space-intensive green feature is the blackwater recycling system, which reclaims about 43,000 gallons of wastewater each day. The processed blackwater, along with storm water, is used in the cooling tower, for flushing toilets, and for irrigation of the 12,000 square feet of green roofs. The system occupies about 5,000 square feet on the north side of the second and third floors, an area not suitable for apartments because of the proximity of an existing structure. Although the equipment added about 1.5 percent to the construction cost of the building, the square footage did not count against the tower’s allowable floor area ratio and made perfect use of space that would not generate revenue, points out Bruce Fowle, FAIA, FXFOWLE senior principal. The system is sized to also handle the blackwater load of the Rose, an apartment building the developer plans for the site just to the west of the Helena.
