Suggestions for "Trainwrecks" mixtape

looking to make a mix of of songs in which the artist made a drastic, excessive, ill-advised turn in his/her career. The results could have been positive or negative or just really interesting (which hopefully they'll all be). I'm still pretty vague with what I want for it, so I'm hoping you guys will argue with me and have some suggestions I won't know about...

Ideas I have so far: something off of Tim Buckley's "Starsailor", that Lou Reed rap song (I've never heard it, actually), Malcom McLaren's "Buffalo Gals", something late Scott Walker, "The Crucifixion" or one of the other excessive Phil Ochs songs, "Crazy Babies" by Ozzy Osbourne...I had more which I'll add when I remember.

Lauryn Hill "Oh Jerusalem" from her Unplugged album.

"My Humps"

Good call on "My Humps"; "London Bridge" would work too

Kevin Mulllligan (Reebock Mcentire), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

"Buffalo Gals" ain't no trainwreck. "Baby I Love You" by the Ramones might fit, even though I like it.

everything (everything), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

Kevin's initial definition didn't exclude good songs. I like "My Humps".

MC Hammer - "Pumps And A Bump"

Velvet Underground, Squeeze

I don't really see how "My Humps" fits, but whatever.

Well didn't it move the sniggery "BEP aren't a proper rap group" attitude from the background to the 20 feet high neon-lit foreground?

No Suntan, No Credibility (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

"My Humps" is only a trainwreck if someone uses it for their figure skating routine, IMHO.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of figured that one that used to be "Let's Get Retarded" before they fucked it up or "Where Is The Love?" or something like that would hold that coveted spot, as they were earlier singles. Weren't they?

"American Life", surely

xpost

They were, but they're not gonzo enough. In my opinion, obv.

Search tracks where classic rock bands "went disco"
Kiss - I was made for lovin' you
Rolling Stones - Miss You
Grateful Dead - Dancin' in the Streets

BrianB (BrianB), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

By ILM law, every mix tape has to have a New Order track, so I nominate "World In Motion" (which isn't that terrible, but relatively... eeeeh, yeah it is.)

Neil Young - "We R In Control" (or almost anything off Trans)
Bad Religion - "Billy Gnosis" (or almost anything off Into The Unknown)

Another good 'gone disco' song is The Kinks "Wish I Could Fly Like Superman"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

in the rock bands going disco vein, one of the original ideas for this I had was "Hot Stuff" by the Stones, which I only heard once but i remember being disastrous...

Kevin Mulllligan (Reebock Mcentire), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

Bob Mould, "Megamania."

I second the retraction for "Buffalo Gals." The entire point of Malcolm McLaren is drastic, excessive, ill-advised turns. And it's the song that helped birth the Art of Noise!

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

Van Halen - "Dancing In The Streets"

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

Trans rules and We R in Control is one of the best songs!

I Was Made for Loving You and (esp) Miss You are JAMZ!

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

I agree that "Miss You" has a certain contrived quality, but then what Stones track doesn't. On the other hand it also has a sincerity at points that makes it a keeper for me.

factcheckr (factcheckr), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and that's "Megamanic" above. So horrible, I blocked it from my memory...

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

Rod Stewart "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" - I think this song is great, but it was a total cash-in that was heavily derided at the time.

the dow nut industrial average dead joe mama besser (donut), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

the Lou Reed song is "The Original Wrapper"

the dow nut industrial average dead joe mama besser (donut), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

i agree with the point about mclaren, myke, but yeah, again, this includes good songs too...I love buffalo gals and a lot of the other stuff on duck rock

Kevin Mulllligan (Reebock Mcentire), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

Dee Dee Ramones rap album.

S- (sgh), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

Brian Wilson's "Smart Girls" vs. Lou Reed's "Original Wrapper" anyone? At least Wilson had meds for an excuse. I've never heard Dee Dee's rapping.

In the other direction, BODY COUNT!

bendy (bendy), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

Dee Dee Ramones rap album.

OMG, "Dee Dee King" ... weren't there two albums?

"Fuh-fuh-fuh-fuh-fuh-funky...!"

badg (badg), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 05:56 (nineteen years ago)

dude... "buffalo gals" is clearly not the trainwreck for malcolm mclarren... that modernized opera stuff he did... that's clearly his trainwreck.

Dan Gr (certain), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

Paul McCartney's "Temporary Secretary" seems to be the best song where people are SHOCKED when you tell them who it is.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

Surely Duran Duran's cover of "911 is a Joke" should be included- so bad, in so many ways!

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

Swans - "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
