louie vega is like kenny dope without the range. kenny dope knows his hip-hop, his dancehall, his ghetto house, etc. louie vega is a bit too tied up (or rather tied down) to his latin/garage roots.
Which is a good argument. Still, he came to mind just now for digging out Erasure's The Two Ring Circus for the first time in god knows how long and remembering he did an okay remix of "Victim of Love" for that -- but the really stellar cut is his reworking of "Hideaway." Though obviously he's done a lot more than that. Anyway, classic/dud, search/destroy, hi dere waht is Nuyorican Soul made, etc.

i am not exaggerating one bit when i say it was atrocious.
for some reason i failed to give dude his freestyle props. he worked a bit w/ the cover girls and 2 in a room, among others, and i can't remember exactly what those louie vega productions sound like (it all, uh, blends together a bit for me, which makes sense, obviously, because all of my freestyle is in the form of latin rascals megamixes) but i'm sure they rock

the cover girls tracks are "because of you" and "once upon a time"
obviously "because of you" is like an ALL-TIME CLASSIC (#2 top seller for cover girls on itunes) if not quite as good as "show me".
his 2 in a room track "take me away" (also available on itunes) is one of those that will have early breakbeat aficionados slobbering ... total proto-hardcore skittery breakbeats (think LFO), trax records piano pads, spooky dessicated wind noises, 808 bombs away in the background, and a diva screaming "take me away" ... totally UNSANE production, A++++++
apparently he was a huge NYC DJ in the mid-80s (and kenny dope was like the outsider ruffneck studio wizard he hooked up with, so obvious i would prefer kenny dope) and he was a massive influence on TODD TERRY, so that's cool in my book too

I've seen that thing in bargain bins and been totally reluctant to buy it, even for a dollar.
Anyway, "Take Me Away" is a classic, as is "Show Me". I have a soft spot for freestyle - it never really died here in Toronto (and its surrounding 'burbs), and I've produced a handful of tracks for that market. My biggest beef is that there are few people left who actually write good pop songs in that style.
Doesn't Doug Lazy have a cameo on one of the Vega/Anthony tunes?

the first four-CD MAW box is totally crucial; the second one, a lot less so.
Vega is stylistically fairly narrow, it's true, but he's one of the rockingest fucking DJs I've ever danced to.

Really liking the second half of this DJ mix from 1993 or so.
Although it's not as good as this one from 1994 - but what could be?

tim - are either of these mixes lurking anywhere on the net?
― sam500, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 08:50 (eighteen years ago)
Not that I'm aware of... I have them on CD. It would take me forever and a day to upload but I might get round to it at some point.

What do his sets sound like nowadays? Because he's coming to my country and i don't know if $15 worth it.
