Which is the best album of these three?

Paul Edward Wagemann (PaulEdwardWagemann), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

Remain In The Light by a pretty sizeable margin.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty sizeable barely covers it

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

As albums: Remain in Light > Combat Rock > War.

The subsequent tours: 9-piece Talking Heads >>>>>> Clash >> U2.

I thought you were banned.

"I thought you were banned."

So did I...

I'm no fan of U2, but War was a pretty good album. Remain in Light is great, no doubt about it. But I dont understand why Combat Rock gets no love? Is it because 'should I stay or should I go' was used for a Levi ad in the UK? Is it because of the overexposure of the 'Rock the Casbah' video back in the early 80s? This album does go to the extremes with african-inspired beats like Remain in light, but it does alot of things Remain in Light doesnt do...
First of all there are at least 3 tunes with great foil performances on COmbat Rock.
There is also one of the all-time great samples ever put on record on 'Innoculated City' with the toilet bowl cleaner commercial. I also find that Remain In Light is also too focused on all the African rythym stuff, and that it actually limits the album, whereas Combat Rock has all kinds of influences running through it...raunchy guitar, jazz sax, drum machine, harmonica, vocal foils, samples, and so on...

Remain in Light by 10,000,000 light years, and I like Combat Rock just fine.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I love about half of Combat Rock. Same for War.

I love every second of Remain In Light. This isn't close.

I would have loved hearing Phish cover "Combat Rock" from start to finish.

Remain In Light

Then War

Then London Calling

Then Combat Rock

Sean Robison (yaratnam), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

I love all three. My Top 10 songs among them are:

1. "Once in a Lifetime"
2. "Rock the Casbah"
3. "Straight to Hell"
4. "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"
5. "Sunday Bloody Sunday"
6. "Two Hearts Beat as One"
7. "New Year's Day"
8. "Surrender"
9. "Born Under Punches"
10. "Ghetto Defendent"

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

I put all three in my CD player today (it holds five cds--the other two are a Shoes double disc and mission Of burma's VS)...doing some research on the early 80s and trying to create a vibe...I have to say War has some very strong moments, but Remain in LIght is really mind blowing. Combat Rock is solid as hell too...

Paul Edward Wagemann (PaulEdwardWagemann), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

"Remain in Light" and "Combat Rock" both start strong and religate the weird, dark stuff to the second half. Those who haven't heard it recent;y may not recall that "Combat Rock" even concludes with some jazzy African-music type noodling.

Anyway, I listen to "Combat Rock" more than "Remain in Light" (I'm a "More Songs About Buildings and Food" guy), but both are excellent.

Anyone else ever hear that radio piece with Byrne and Eno talking about the creation of "Once in a Lifetime?" Basically, the song as originally demoed was just the funky A part over and over again. It was Eno who came up with the awesome chorus. That's why he gets co-writing credit on that one. The album'd be less exciting without Belew, too.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 21 September 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, "War" is pretty good, too, but I suppose I'd listen to the "Red Rocks" album before the studio versions.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 21 September 2006 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

Adrian Belew adds an incredible amount to Remain in Light. SOme of the best guitar work I've ever heard...

Paul Edward Wagemann (PaulEdwardWagemann), Thursday, 21 September 2006 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

one good song, garbage, one the best albums of its time.

Godfrzej Ljang (godfrzej), Thursday, 21 September 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

oh Combat Rock has at least two good songs, "Straight to Hell" is ace

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:07 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe it's just me, but the chorus on "Once in a Lifetime makes my balls shrivel, but the normal, Eno "A-part" makes my knee jut out violently. er.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

oh Combat Rock has at least two good songs, "Straight to Hell" is ace

yeah, but what's the other one?

Godfrzej Ljang (godfrzej), Thursday, 21 September 2006 06:56 (nineteen years ago)

All have some nice songs. "War" suffers from bad production, "Combat Rock" is patchy, from a band past its prime, "Remain In Light" may not be as strong on the song front but does at least have excellent production and arrangements.

It is rarely that I will pick an album because of better production/arrangements, but I do in this case. "Remain In Light".

Another nutter, who's pet theory of art seesm to be more important to him than the art itself, as far as I can tell.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

To answer the thread question, "Remain in Light" is the best. The other 2 are fucking shit.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:02 (nineteen years ago)

Is he like Geir?

Remain In Light is very good. The other two I don't own or care about even slightly.

PaulEdwardWagamama has a shit stereo.
