Suggestions of Music with a Native American Influence/sound/tonal reference?

I am currently searching for music to put together for a fashion show. The challenge here is that the theme of the collection is New Mexico-Native American and I want to coordinate music with the clothing that alludes to the Native American influence in the clothes. I don't want to use the cheesy sort of music that one may find in a Santa Fe resort gift shop, if that makes sense. Does any one have suggestions for (1) an ambient native american music/album/song, etc and (2) something with a more modern feel perhaps with a good walking beat???????

jaxon - nice Horace Silver picture. So - what you are suggesting is that I go to the music store and puruse for pictures of musicians dressed like indians?

If you want some older stuff try Redbone, a band that "identified" with Native Americans, at least. I can't tell from the Wiki if they actually were.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

Reading it again I see the two founders were in fact N-A.

redbone's "come and get your love" is one of the greatest yacht-rock songs ever. but, yeah, can't imagine anyone would identify the song as having a native american sound or tonal reference.

Tom Dowd claims he was instrumental in making the arrangement come together for "Sunshine Of Your Love" when he suggested that Ginger Baker play an "Indian beat."

Some people think the sixteenth note rhythm of "The Immigrant Song" sounds Native American.

What you want is Robbie Robertson. He's got an assload of later stuff that's either directly NA or NA+mild electronica.
Or you could look for Ani-Kuni by Madeline Chartrand, some NA psych from Montreal.

js (honestengine), Thursday, 21 September 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

(Though super-subtle hint— Native Americans are not all one culture, and shouldn't be treated as such any more than Africa is a homogenous country).

"native americans are not all one culture...."

I was not suggesting that in any way. It was the culture in general that inspired the collection. I am looking for anything, in general, that will allude to this culture, that will evoke an emotion in the audience who is viewing the show.

Wow, Apache, I just showed the video to a bunch of people at work. Those dancers do a killer routine...and how do they gear up all of that modernt equipment in the wilderness?

Amazing.

Jenny J (JennyLynn), Thursday, 21 September 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

love the dancers and their "bow-and-arrow" move...(I believe Mr. Burns referred to this move as an "Iroquois Press" on The Simpsons)...

marbles- That's not quite it, I don't think my audience would take that music seriously, although it is serious music, but it is the right track.

Mitch Mitchell's drumbeats in the Jimi Hendrix Experience's "I Don't Live Today". (Hendrix being 1/4 Cherokee, of course.)

I've gotta confess that I'm an ignoramus, and have virtually no clue what a typical "tonal reference" would sound like - all I can think of is (stereo-)typical "tom-toms and chanting" stuff.

Jenny J (JennyLynn), Thursday, 21 September 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

"tonal reference"

T tone in the instrumentation that alludes to native american music, or has a suggestive sound in this manner

Jenny J (JennyLynn), Thursday, 21 September 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Check out a composer/player named Charles Cacioppo. He is a music prof and most of his works are inspired by ethnomusicological investigations into NA rhythm and tonal structures.
