kwhitehead (stephen schmidt), Friday, 22 September 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

I've been through my collection, wondering which albums would be most appropriate for crisp autumn mornings. For me, such an album needs to be extremely vivid, psychedelic, involving without being too intrusive, not entirely comprehendable, painted in broad, melting brushstrokes, reflective and generally uniform in sound.

Programming this in, the best results, as I have discovered, are probably Neutral Milk Hotel's ITAOTS, Jesu's recent Silver EP, Ride's Today Forever EP (mostly for 'Today', which is probably the most fitting song I can think of for this thread), XTC's Nonsuch, and various early Verve stuff (early singles + A Storm In Heaven).

Much of this falls under the 'shoegaze' arc; it seems to me like there are different 'moods' of shoegaze, and that the more immediately euphoric, fast-paced albums of that genre would strike a perfect fit with the crisp autumn morning scenario. I was half-tempted to throw Pygmalion into this list, but no, no, no, that album, although it has the right tonal qualities, is too slow, introverted and private an affair; it feels like it wants you to be the only person in on its fascinating little world, whilst the others I've mentioned feel like they're broadcasting their messages of bliss to as many people as have the means to hear them.

XTC's Nonsuch is in my opinion their finest hour (I am aware that this is an unpopular opinion amongst XTC fans), but to these ears its bittersweet vibe is unmatched elsewhere inside the canon. Lacking the precision 1980's production values of their previous albums, it managed to sound both more restrained and more captivating, in essence more timeless than their other works. As cerebral pop songcraft goes, it's tough to beat, but the reason it works so well as crisp autumn morning fare is that the songs lack any sort of intimacy; they, again, deliver their hooks and their pastoral sentiments without the merest hint of secrecy or guilt; they are proud of themselves and they are eager to paint as full an aural picture as can be mustered. I also challenge you all to go outdoors listening to 'Then She Appeared' and not get lost in reverie for a minute or two.

The Neutral Milk Hotel album is the only other non-shoegaze material on the list, and although some might say it betrays my lack of acoustic-guitar material that I have not seen fit to include any more than this here, it is to my opinion that mere acoustic-guitar is not enough to fulfil the qualities of an October morning. It requires a third dimension, an extra psychedelic edge, for me, and ITAOTS provides this with its assortment of buzzing, clanging and whirring sounds (I forget the instruments that create these noises, except for the 'musical saws' of the title-track, but I am well aware of the effects they create), leaving the listener slightly disorientated, slightly hard-pressed to believe he is hearing quite what is being produced by his speakers, giddy with hope, lust, and longing.

This is a highly interesting question, for the crisp autumn morning is as perfect a time as any to indulge one's senses, active and hypersensitive as they are at such a time.

('Unlucky to miss out' song: The Dukes Of Stratosphear's 'What In The World??...', seeing as XTC have already had their slice of pie.)

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

(The Byrds would have also gotten a mention but for the fact that they started this thread. Their third dimension is supplied by the fact they employ both acoustic and electric guitars in most of their songs, with a quite wonderful net effect. Their fifth dimension is supplied by all the waccy-baccy they were smoking.)

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 4 October 2017 21:26 (eight years ago)

When I take the dog out for a walk at the moment Tyshawn Sorey's amazing Verisimilitude is my fave listening at the moment. Probably a hard sell because it is a piano trio that is strictly a long listen if you want enjoy it's power. But maybe that is a very autumnal quality idk, but I'm obsessed with this one rn.
