what say you?

Straight Bat (Straight Bat), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

It's one of their worst songs but better jokes.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe this is their biggest hit in the US.
Or was it their only hit? The "Coffee & TV" was popular, if I recall correctly, the video anyway.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

"There's No Other Way" got some airplay here, but I don't know that I'd say it was a hit.

"Song 2" = classic, if only for how it serves as a blueprint for Graham Coxon's solo career.

Dan Heilman (The Deacon), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

'There's No Other Way' and 'Girls And Boys' were their only charting US singles, at 82 and 59 respectively.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Kurt Cobain is on the record as having praised TNOW, I think.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

"Girls and Boys" was minor here, too, but deffo not a hit.

"Song 2" is pretty good. Good drum sound. Good roffle.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

Hit or not, I think it's one of their finest moments. Especially when accompanied by watching its video. So much energy crammed into 2:02.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

how could it be anything other than classic?

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

"Song 2" is apparently one of those songs that gets played during football games here in the US. Weird. Does this happen in the UK?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

Occasionally, but Republica are the staple footie diet over here. Whole different ball game, of course.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

I seriously think this is the only Blur song I've ever heard.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

Remedy that, like, yesterday!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

Song 2 is SO non-representative of their carreer. Blur's best albums are chock full of good songs. Comparable to Waters/Gilmour or Lennon/McCartney or Jagger/Richards. Or fill in the blank of whatever really good dad-rock songwriter. It's good stuff

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 21 September 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Classique

Erroneous Botch (joseph cotten), Thursday, 21 September 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

Classic. I remember being so excited that I managed to tape it off the radio (I was still a few months away from a cd player). I listened to it everyday after school.

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Thursday, 21 September 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

Neither classic nor dud. It's pretty enjoyable, but nowhere near one of Blur's best songs.

"Song 2" is apparently one of those songs that gets played during football games here in the US. Weird. Does this happen in the UK?

Thankfully songs don't get played *during* football matches here, apart from at Teh Reebok where Bolton fans are 'treated' to a blast of James Brown's 'I Feel Good' on the rare occasions they score.

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

It soundtracked the TV spots for Starship Troopers, which only enhances its classic status.

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

Clubs trhat I've been to that are known to play it after a goal: Sunderland, Middlesborough, Hull, Wimbledon (RIP), and I vaguely remember Forest doing it, though I could be wrong there.

Regardless, classic, obviously.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

IIRC it was far more popular during UK ice hockey.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

Mark Cuban (Dallas Mavericks owner and all-around blowhard) lamented its over-use here:

schwantz (schwantz), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Whoops. Wrong song.

schwantz (schwantz), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

_starship troopers_ is the best movie ever written if only for inspiring people to read the book. (the best that right wing sexually open social darwinist anarchy has to offer)

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Friday, 22 September 2006 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

Song 2 is the first Blur song I ever heard, I remember being really dissapointed when I learned that they did not sound like that always. CLASSIC!

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 22 September 2006 04:52 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's alright but even before it became overplayed, it sounded overplayed. And no it's not their best song and it's in no way representative of their sound, more a parody of Grunge or something. Great album "Blur" though.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 22 September 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

Worst Blur single ever. Major dud.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 22 September 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

this guy

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

'salright, the Earl Zinger cover version is, however, totally ace.

lexurian (lexurian), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

As far as ubiquitous obnoxious-but-catchy tunes seemingly tailor-made for advertising jingles, I prefer it to "Who Let the Dogs Out?"

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Friday, 22 September 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

Classic

toe-foo (toe-foo), Friday, 22 September 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

clasic

babysquid (babysquid), Saturday, 23 September 2006 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

sorry! I meant ClasSic

babysquid (babysquid), Saturday, 23 September 2006 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

Classic riff, spoiled by appallingly rotten lyrics. I've heard people defend them on the grounds that "the laziness is the point", which I can well believe, but I still can't enjoy them.

scriblerus (mike lynch), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

Classic, though I've heard it too much to listen it again.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 25 September 2006 06:46 (nineteen years ago)

woo-hoo is an awesome lyric!!!!!

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 25 September 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

"woo-hoo" is great, it's the rest of the lyrics that shit me.
