On the little bulletin board thing on this page, someone notes that
Neil has decided to make his Archives available in a similar fashion to
Dylan's bootleg series.

Danny Whitten live! Whoo! I'm excited.

I got chills reading those set lists. With Danny Whitten. Unreal ...

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

pretty bad when you're dealin with the man and the light shines in your eyes ... YEAH

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

It's whatever date the version of "Come on Baby..." that was on Tonight's the Night is from. And, it's only his set with Crazy Horse, not the acoustic first half.

But hey, it's a start.

Dan Heilman (The Deacon), Friday, 22 September 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

I had no idea "Winterlong" was that old of a tune. The one on "Decade" is like mid-70's, isn't it? Anyway, this looks great. I've always loved how "Downtown" comes out of nowhere in the middle of TTN and rocks yr face off before getting back to the gloom. Hopefully the rest of the show is just as powerful.

Lynco (lync0), Friday, 22 September 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

And is "Wonderin'" the same song as the one on Everybody's Rockin'? Great song.

Hideous Lump (Hideous Lump), Friday, 22 September 2006 01:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to hear an entire good live show of the original Crazy Horse when Danny Whitten was around just after Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere came out. There has to be some decent tapes out there, as "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" on Tonight's the Night is a live stage recording with Whitten from a few years beforehand.

The official Neil Young Archives countdown thread

I guess Neil read the thread.

a LOT of neil's catalog consists of songs he wrote, and was playing live, years -- decades even -- before he recorded them. he's been working that way forever.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 22 September 2006 03:11 (nineteen years ago)

The "Winterlong" on Decade was recorded ca. '73, but it and "Wonderin'" (yep, from Everybody's..., minus the doo-wah chorus) had been in their set for years.

Any fans who haven't heard the boots of these shows, prepare to be blown away by "Cowgirl in the Sand."

oh thx god

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 22 September 2006 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

he's been working that way forever.

Yes, indeed. Blatant example: Silver & Gold includes two songs he'd been playing out for nearly 20 years. Great versions on the album though.

Also, in a more annoying Neil tendency, a lot of his songs have sprung from variations of the same damn riff since Ragged Glory. Some of those, however, are great -- "Big Green Country," "Be the Rain," a couple from "Living With War," "Slip Away."

I have the Feb. '71 Royal Albert Hall show and I'm prepared to be blown away by all of it. I LOVE that "On the Way Home" was in his set back then -- about half the time, it's my favorite Springfield song.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

alright! this is good news!
