Pioneer CD-Js-WTF is the lead to connect two together for?

Looked in the manual, it said something like "beat relay" or something. What is this? Will I ever use it?

Also use this thread to discuss funny shit I can do with this great new toy.

dunno. which model did you get?

The 800 has the best looping feature, where you set the loop, then can automatically cut it half, fourths or eigths. The other models have loop in and out and let you select the time, but not with buttons that do it directly.

I got the 800 yeah, two of them, alot of saving! I figured the 1000 was too much of a price difference for essentially doing very little extra, or nothing I could think of that was worth while. I mean, once it plays data discs and has a decent loop and the big platter then you're fine....IMO

And yeah those loop functions are great, very handy and incredibly easy to use...

The one thing I'd really like is a card slot. The 1000 has it but I think it's just for saving loops or cue points or something. I want no more CDs! I want to show up with a fucking mini-SD card or whatever with all my songs on it. And yes, I know Numark makes like 4 devices with that feature, but their control platters look like toys, whereas the Pioneer platter is great fun.

is it me, or the bpm counter perhaps, but mixing seems kind of effortless on these things? perhaps the fact you can know exactly how much you're adjusting the pitch also...

I mean I can mix well enough on vinyl...but I was mixing tracks I'd just digitised and wasn't even familiar with in huge long segues just now...

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 22 September 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

don't the machines, er, help you out?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 22 September 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

well yes, by playing the record and removing the need to melt vinyl down and weld two pieces of music together manually....

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 22 September 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

oh, i thought they were so expensive because they could automate the beatmatching process (or at least part of it).

Product search results for pioneer cd-j
Pioneer CDJ800MK2 - $527.50 - The Disco Studio
Pioneer CDJ800MK2 - $529.00 - DJ Equipment Online

still sort of pricey for a cd player with a control wheel and some looping features

one other thing....when you're making a cd-r of mp3s, how do you make it so you can flick through them all with the track buttons instead of them being in folders that you have to flick through. sometimes that's handy but sometimes it's not.....

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 22 September 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

also, what part of a file is the thing it will say on the display of your cd player, I had no idea what half my tracks were just now, cos it's like MICROFON006 or some number...

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 22 September 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

i was hoping that was a real artist

These machines do not help you beatmatch, if it's easier I say it's because this...the degree by which dragging the platter or pushing the side effects the record is consistent, whereas on vinyl, it depends on various factors like how tight the spindle hole is and if it's even remotely warped or how much sweat you have on your hand.

Woah. The feel of these things are leagues beyond almost all other CD players I've tried, not to mention the vinyl simulation, which isn't just for hip-hop djs, but any dj who likes to cue his records by listening to it, stopping it with his hand and back-cueing. Most cheaper CD players you hit pause and it starts stuttering and it stays stuttering then you hit play to bring it in, instead of just pushing the "record" forward.

They have tons of other features, like adjusting tempo without adjusting pitch, the ability to adjust to your preference the way it emulates the torque of a turntable, etc etc.

I've never used the mp3 CD/folder structure thing yet, but can't wait to.

we just got dj mehdi to play at one of our gigs last week, and he used the auto-cue feature the whole way through. I thought that was interesting cause i had never even really used that feature before.

in general i just prefer playing off a laptop with ableton - if you're going to be doing things electronically why not just go all the way? I use a real mixer though, with USB input/output to keep everything clean.

does it have a feature that emulates the 45 @ 33 effect... cause there's a market for that, i'd bet!

grady (grady), Saturday, 23 September 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

the mannual is the only mannual i've ever read all the way through.
as per with these things, i found it a mixture of overly-obvious and not detailed enough. that aside yes WHAT a toy it is.

still smarting at the price. they seem to be a good £200 more expensive than they should be.

yeah i'm with DJ MEHDI all the way on the auto cue feature. immediate panic if i suddenly realise the auto cue light isn't on as the track comes to an end...

pisces (piscesx), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

and to answer the original question, just saw this in a description of one of the littler CDJs:

Relay Play
Connecting two CDJ-100S allows one song to be put on standby while the other plays (Auto cue must be on). Relay Play automatically starts the second unit at the end of the song for uninterrupted play. This continues back and forth until both discs are done.

Probably the same on yours.
