There's lots of songs where the singer tells the band to "take it down"

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

Al Green shusshes his band in "Dream"...

hank (hank s), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Okay..
Guess who's back... back again
Shady's back, tell a friend
Now everyone report to the dance floor
To the dance floor, to the dance floor
Now everyone report to the dance floor
Alright stop... pajama time

[Verse 1]
Come here little kiddies, on my lap
Guess who's back with a brand new rap
And I don't mean rap as in a new case
Of child investigation accusation
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
No worries, pappa's got a brand new bag of toys
What else could I possibly do to make noise
I'd done touched on everything but little boys
And that's not a stab at Michael
That's just a metaphor, I'm just psycho
I go a little bit crazy sometimes
I get a little bit out of control with my rhymes
Good God, dip, do a little slide
Bend down, touch your toes and just glide
Up the center of the dance floor
Like T.P.
Whoops! I mean girl... girl, girl, girl
"Girl you know you're my world"
Alright now lose it
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Just lose it
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Go crazy
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Oh baby
"Aah aah"
Oh baby baby
"Aah aah"

[Verse 2]
{Sung}
It's Friday and it's my day
Just to party all the way to Sunday
Maybe 'til Monday, I dunno what day
Everday's just a holiday
Cruisin' on the freeway, feelin' kinda breezy
Get the top down, let my hair blow
I dunno where I'm goin', all I know is when I get there
Someone's gonna "touch my body"

{Rap}
Excuse me miss, I don't mean to sound like a jerk
But I'm feelin' just a little stressed out from work
Could you punch me in the stomach and pull my hair
Spit on me, maybe gauge my eyes out, "ewww"
Now what's your name girl, what's your sign?
[Dr Dre: "Man you must be up out your mind"]
Dre "aah aah", beer goggles,blind
I'm just trying to unwind, now I'm...

{*Chorus*}
Now I'm gonna make you dance
It's your chance, yeah boy shake that ass
Whoops! I mean girl... girl, girl, girl
"Girl you know you're my world"
Alright now lose it
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Just lose it
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Go crazy
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Oh baby
"Aah aah"
Oh baby baby
"Aah aah"

[Verse 3]
{Sung}
It's Tuesday and I'm locked up
I'm in jail, I don't know what happened
They say I was running butt naked
Down the street screaming
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Well I'm sorry, I don't remember
All I know is this much, I'm not guilty
They said save it boy, we've got you on tape
yelling at an old lady to "touch my body"

{Rap}
Now this is the part where the rap breaks down
It's real intense, no one makes a sound

Everything looks like it's 8 Mile now
The beat comes back and everybody loses theirselves
Now snap back to reality, look it's B. Rabbit he
Oh you signed me up to battle? I'm a grown man
Chubba chubba chubba chubba chubba chubba chubba chubba
I don't have any lines to go right here so
Chubba tubba tell me fellas (what?), fellas (what?)
Grab your left, make your right one jealous (what?)
Black girls, white girls, skinny girls, fat girls
Tall girls, small girls, I'm calling all girls
Everyone report to the dance floor
It's your chance for, a little romance or
Butt squeezin', it's the season
Just go "aah aah aah aah", it's so appeasing

{*Chorus*}
Now I'm gonna make you dance
It's your chance, yeah boy shake that ass
Whoops! I mean girl... girl, girl, girl
"Girl you know you're my world"
Alright now lose it
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Just lose it
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Go crazy
"Aah aah aah aah aah"
Oh baby
"Aah aah"
Oh baby baby
"Aah aah"

{Outro:}
Mmhmm touch my body
Mmhmm touch my body
Ooh boy just touch my body
I mean girl just touch my body

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Radiohead - The National Anthem

"Turn it off!"

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

"Shout," as anybody who has crossed paths with a Dance and Shout Elmo can tell you.

Run Ruud Run (Ken L), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

"Bring it down a little / Love is very peaceful / So bring it down a little"

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

In Nirvana's cover of "Do You Love Me" by KISS, Kurt yells "Fuckin' turn it off, turn it off!" near the end.

xxpost
I thought that was "Holding on".

LC (Damian), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

I mean xxxxpost now. Oh well, as you were.

LC (Damian), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty sure Iggy does this on Fun House. "Takin' it dowwn"

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

It doesn't help that Yorke steadfastly refuses to pronounce his consonants, to be fair.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

"Could you turn down the track a little bit, please?"

Rachel Stevens - Negotiate With Love

ana (ana), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Iggy does it all the time, but I don't think the singer asking the band to turn the music down is what dave q intended this thread to be about

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Indeed, 'let's take it down' is not an exhortation to the listener. 'Turn it off', however, is.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

But "turn it off" might be an exhortation to the recording engineer to stop the tape running? Yes?

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Don't they record the song first and then sort all that out in the studio? Pardon me for being naive, but I thought that that was how it was done.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

C/D: Lisa Loeb's "Stay (I Missed You)"

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

Don't they record the song first and then sort all that out in the studio? Pardon me for being naive, but I thought that that was how it was done.

Yes but if the singer is singing to a backing tape in his headphones and he's finished his singing he might very well tell the engineer to turn off the backing tape - esp. if he's a bad mood!

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, but surely that bit would be edited out of the final song? Also, the turn-it-offs mentioned so far seem to have been stylised, part-of-song turns-it-off, not 'I've finished now, get this the fuck away from me and BRING ME DOPE' turn-its-off.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Or he might take the headphones off.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Curses! I am undone!

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

probably doesn't count, but that one Walkmen song that goes "The music's loud / In your room / Turn it down"

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: I shall cherish this small victory. It is never long before my next defeat. :-)

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

... not so fast, for having thought about it, the singer might be telling the engineer to stop recording once his vocals are finished

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Friday, 22 September 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

"Radio's blastin', turn that shit off" - Replacements (but what song? 'More Cigarettes'?)

NickB (NickB), Friday, 22 September 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

...which still wouldn't get onto the final cut!

xpost

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

... yes it would if the band decided to be all wacky and avant-garde and leave it in!

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Friday, 22 September 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Digital Underground, Doowutchalike

"Daytime radio DJs, we will now begin your fade for you."

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Friday, 22 September 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: Hmm, I suppose in Pulp's 'She's A Lady' Jarvis Cocker says 'Stop' right at the end.

I told you my next defeat wasn't long in coming! :-D

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Friday, 22 September 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Van Morrison owns this thread.
"It's All in the Game" from Into the Music, and "Raglan Road" from "Irish Heartbeat" are two notable examples.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Friday, 22 September 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

Destroyer - "To The Heart of the Sun": Dan Bejar hushes the band by saying "Sshhhhhh..."

Ween - "Mourning Glory": At the end of the song Gene shouts "Stop the tape!"

Ween - "Awesome Sound": Gene repeatedly requests that the beat be dropped ("Hit me again!")

topdownjimmy (topdownjimmy), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

... didn't we established earlier on that all three of those examples are not what this thread is about?

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

WELL WE COULDN'T THINK OF ANY!!!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

.. unless of course you are a member of Destroyer or Ween or acted as the recording engineer on Ween's "Mourning Glory" (xpost)

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

"Could you turn down the track a little bit, please?"
Rachel Stevens - Negotiate With Love

-- ana (anapatrici...), September 22nd, 2006 10:42 AM. (ana)

This really is one of those perfect moments in song.

danzig (danzig), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Revolting Cocks - Gila Copter - ?

Ben Dot (1977), Friday, 22 September 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe something from the first Basehead album?

Or Bjork's (or whomever's) "It's Oh So Quiet?"

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 22 September 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

Van Morrison comes very close in "Caravan":

Turn it up
A little bit higher
Turn it up
That's enough!
Just so you know
It's got soul.

Seems v. possible that it could be turned up too much, and would then have to be turned down.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 22 September 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

david bowie 'it's no game'

dave q (listerine), Friday, 22 September 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

The Nazz, "Forget All About it." "If you haven't got time to rest/Then take the record off now."

mike a (mike a), Friday, 22 September 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Friday, 22 September 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

scarface - guess who's back (ft. jay-z & beanie siegel)

in his usual minute of unmetered introduction, where he tells the producer "turn the noise up",etc. jay-z actually say's "ok.. headphone's are distortin'... let's bring it down a little bit"

sublime frequency (sublime frequency), Saturday, 23 September 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

The Rubinoos' Rock'n'Roll is Dead (off their self-titled 1977 debut) memorably began with a loud shout of "Turn it down!"

Wub-Fur Internet Radio (wubfur), Sunday, 24 September 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

yellow swans have one cd (dyad, i think) that is very very quiet and then totally explodes during the last 45 seconds or so. my friend bought it at a show and they said "don't turn it up too loud. your speakers will blow."
