This really is the best modern re-issue series - I manage to get so wrapped up in these things for months.

SM Jenkins

this is defintely the most patchy of the three reissues so far.

my inability to purchase this until next payday is KILLING ME INSIDE.

spastic heritage (spastic heritage), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

Once again I want to get a cabin alone in the woods of Big Bear and spend the weekend with this glorious set.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

Mine should be arriving in the mail soon. With a bonus 7" and poster ;-)

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

Got mine today. It'll be on heavy rotation for the next month or so. 3 versions of Easily Fooled sounds little excessive, but I trust the good people who assembled this.

What's Insound's problem? Still nothing--so annoying!

It sounds really great, esp. compared to my worn-out store-bought cassette.
The booklet really sucks though.

"brighten the corners: nicene creed edition"

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 9 November 2006 06:52 (nineteen years ago)

i actually agree with tk! but bonus points b/c now i have finally heard "i love perth" and have easy access to "sensitive euro man," "painted soldiers," and that schoolhouse rawk track

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 9 November 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

got mine last Saturday and have playin it like crazy. nice to have a copy again, along w/ all those damnedably great bsides. notes are pretty lean, but,not suprising, i guess. would've liked some SS stuff...
still, on the whole, this was the one i've been waiting for the most and not let down in the least. SM said to not expect much 'unheard' stuff as it all pretty much got used. oh, Glass Lined Tanks, who knew you'd become obselete?!
part that makes me smile every time= Kris Kraft w/ ultra scratchy vox (is that Westie?!) "WALK THE PLANK, BABY!"

edde (edde), Thursday, 9 November 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

let's hear it for the KILLER CR, CR version of Black Out on the 7''

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 9 November 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

but yeah the booklet blows.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 9 November 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

all i want to do is listen to "black out" on repeat for the next six years

what does it mean “hockey sticks”? (teenagequiet), Thursday, 9 November 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Got mine today. It is sooooooooooo awesome and I can't wait to put it on my cd shelf next to the S&E and CRCR reissues. After I listen to it of course.

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Thursday, 9 November 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

First thoughts... nothing will beat the Slanted Deluxe reissue... that was so well put together, liner notes, extra tracks and all. The only shortcoming is the omission of "Teenage Piss Party" from the live show tracks, but I can sorta understand why that wasn't included at the time.

Sordid Sentinels comes close... Pavement had this great talent for not necessarily making excellent B-sides (many were great though) as much as making great compilable B-sides/oddities that often sounded just as good when played together than the real albums. The Wowee B-sides and oddities are among their best in that context.

The CRCR Deluxe was really disappointing to me though, mainly because there were too many lame demo tracks where you heard Stephen lyrically improvisingly really badly, so this may be why Sordid's really shining in comparison.

yeah no shit. "Colorado" & "Rug Rat" were like revisiting that awful 7 inch that came with CR CR w/Haunt Your Down and Jam Kids. Congrats Pavement, I'm glad you dudes are stoned and can't feel your fingers now play all your songs and record them, especially Black Out.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 9 November 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

Uhhh hello?!?!? "All My Friends"?!? That alone makes it worth its weight in gold.

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Thursday, 9 November 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

Yes yes yes, "All My Friends" is awesome, plus all the Gary stuff, I'm just saying this little string of, ahem "hits" is pretty bad.

Fucking Righteous
Colorado
Dark Ages
Flood Victim
JMC Retro
Rug Rat

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 9 November 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

the "soul food" jam is pretty good - it's no "walter's bbq theme," though.

for a band whose recorded songs were so dynamic, exciting, and full of personality (up through WZ, at least), their live/in-studio renditions of the same songs can be so ploddy, mid-tempo, strummy, BLAHHH. they really benefited from the studio atmosphere, being focused, having a "producer," or whatever else attributed to the magick. i guess they didn't get together to practice much between albums, so maybe that's part of it.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

if i were just getting into pavement now, i think the limp-noodle disc 2 stuff from the past few reissues would weaken my overall impression of the band pretty considerably.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

i guess they didn't get together to practice much between albums, so maybe that's part of it.

yeah they didn't live in the same city. and the only record where all members were present through the entire recording process was "brighten the corners"

-- morris pavilion (mrdq4dy0...), November 10th, 2006.

OTM - but as a big longtime fan, it's still a jackpot.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

I had never listened to Pavement before I picked up the Slanted & Enchanted reissue, and I think I would've liked them a lot less if I hadn't heard the Peel sessions and the Watery, Domestic stuff.

bernard snowy (sixteen sergeants), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that stuff is great - that first Peel Session... man

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

I couldn't disagree more. It's a testament to their greatness that they're able to put together these massive 2 cd sets for every studio record. They were the best.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

I would only call the CRCR dlx disc 2 stuff a bit limp.. and it's not nearly as limp as all those Clash demos from the Legacy Edition of London Calling much less many other reissues.

gwynywdd dwnyt fyrwr byychydd gww (donut), Friday, 10 November 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't want these as an introduction, but the 2nd disc of the CR, CR reissue is rewarding when I've played the album countless times since it came out. These are pretty exemplary reissues for folks who are big fans but not so big that they blew twenties on b-sides and bootlegs. The normal full-lengths are still in print for newbies. And cheap!

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 10 November 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

I've played the actual album countless times, rather.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 10 November 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

yeah no shit. "Colorado" & "Rug Rat" were like revisiting that awful 7 inch that came with CR CR w/Haunt Your Down...

light that spliff!

tk (tk), Friday, 10 November 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

not nearly as limp as all those Clash demos from the Legacy Edition of London Calling much less many other reissues.

OTM.

I wish they'd release the Exile on Main Street demos. I found a bootleg cd of stuff from that era, and it was a revelation. There's tons of incredible unreleased songs from that era.

28. I Love Perth [Pacific Trim EP]

??? what limp-dick version of Pacific Trim did I own? I got no Perth.

Will (will), Saturday, 11 November 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

do I own?

Will (will), Saturday, 11 November 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

i think there's some version that didn't have that song on it, tho it's totally escapin me

edde (edde), Saturday, 11 November 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

I Love Perth was only on the 7"; not the CD

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Saturday, 11 November 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

oic

Will (will), Saturday, 11 November 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Listening to disc 2, I'm reminded of SM's habit of babbling annoying crap over what should be instrumental parts.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Saturday, 11 November 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

5-4 Vocal to thread

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Sunday, 12 November 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

Can someone do a you-send-it on the 7" cuts? Mine came without the single or the poster, even though I pre-ordered day of--thanks Insound!
