I'm currently in the grip of nostalgia - the 764-Hero album "Get Here And Stay" from 1998. Anyone out there know this?

I couldn't find any threads about them at all here, but if I'm wrong please point me there.

Yeah I remember that album, barely. One of those 'borrowed from a friend after seeing them live but never actually purchased' records. Calendar Pages especially, but also Ottawa Dropout and a few others. They opened for Built to Spill iirc, were decent as far as that kind of thing goes. Actually bought the next record, which had too many mid-tempo numbers for my taste, but there were a couple of decent ones. Are they even still around?

tate (Tate), Sunday, 24 September 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

Atkins' previous band, Hush Harbor, was far and away better, but even more forgotten. They put out a single and a tape and damn.

jergins (jergins), Sunday, 24 September 2006 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

Calendar Pages! OMG! Don't even get me started.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

No they are not still around at all. John Atkins went on to do a fantastic album with a guy from Black Heart Procession, they called themselves Magic Magicians. Their first album was more amazing in my opinion than any 764-Hero release. It was called "Girls".

Then after that there was one more 764-Hero album and then one more very lackluster Magic Magicians album. Lately John Atkins is in a band called The Can't See, who haven't as yet caught my interest.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

I do have a Hush Harbor CD. I'm not sure if it really registered much with me. I will have to listen to it again.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

it may have been the time and place. i was young, knew them, they played at my house. brilliant memories, at least.

jergins (jergins), Sunday, 24 September 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, one of those pre-9/11 memories.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty good Neil Young-inflected indie rock. I liked the melancholic streak through the bulk of their songs.

Yes, one of those pre-9/11 memories.

try 1993

jergins (jergins), Sunday, 24 September 2006 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

Well, this Hush Harbor song "Hill" does have a rather funky bass. That's good.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

Definitely some of this Hush Harbor EP is very good. Last two songs I think especially..."Sunflower".

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

in college (94-98) these guys and hush harbor were among my fave bands

*indie guilt*

jaxon (jaxon), Sunday, 24 September 2006 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

John has a new band called the Can't See's.. they opened for The Lights in Fremont a month ago or so.. they're alright. (Then again, The Lights are one of the best local bands around, so the comparison is really unfair.) I thought 764 were best with James on bass.. I saw the Red Stars Theory/764-HERO tour where James played in both bands. He was a hard working guy. I miss his presence in music today (although he's happily married now and doing fine.)

or not fall colors

jaxon (jaxon), Sunday, 24 September 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

I loved 764-HERO... "Loaded Painted Red" and "History Lessons" are amazing tracks. And that weird 15 minute single they did with Modest Mouse - "Whenever You See Fit" - was great too.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Sunday, 24 September 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

and now jaxon and i are both disco beardos. coincidence?

davina q (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 24 September 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

u didn't think i had it in me, did you jess?

jaxon (jaxon), Sunday, 24 September 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah it was that 15 minute single that introduced me to them. I heard it on the radio, it wasn't even KEXP it was some other station and yeah, it made a real impression on me. I stopped the car, called the DJ to find out who it was, and that was that. I knew I didn't care for the Modest Mouse vocalist, but the other guy singing was doing something I knew I wanted more of.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

I was very obsessed with Salt Sinks and Sugar Floats -- I can hardly believe this now. I was getting over it by the time GH&S came out but I probably bought it the day it came out. "Loaded Painted Red" was great! I wish they'd done more stuff with that much atmosphere to it. "Coastline" was very nice, too. I would almost try and see if I could find my 764 hero cds but probably not. I think I had the album that came after this too -- can't remember a note from it.

people explosion (Sonny A.), Sunday, 24 September 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

WE'RE SO TIIII-IIIIRED! WEEKENDS OF SOUND!

I'll be damned if he didn't seem to predict the whole Bush 9/11 thing in his lyrics. It's really quite uncannny. Can't quite give an example right now, but it was there. Look for it, you will find it.

Yes, Salt Sinks & Sugar Floats will be my next adventure, here. I've also got two 764-Hero 7"es right here to put on very soon.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Salt Sinks, Sugar Floats! Oh my God! I had really forgotten that this existed but I kept trying to figure out what album had "Quadrophenia" on it. Thanks for the tip! I was thinking more along the lines of the "We're Solids" EP. This is going to be very fun, indeed.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

But have you guys heard the Magic Magicians "Girls" album? WOW! "Everyone is Wrong" makes me feel like I'm surfing waves in California even when it's dark, gray rainy weather.

Also there was one song on this where I felt they took on Led Zeppelin and won...let me figure out which one it was...I think it was "Dakota". Yeah. It's the drums, man, the production. Something.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

i looooooved "salt sinks".... actually just dug the CD out while going through a box of music here at my mom's house... will report back soon. funny, allmusic totally slags it, but i think they're crazy.

"Pacific Northwest emo linked to lifetime of techno usage."

davina q (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 24 September 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

that's getting published in Nature this week, right? who were the peer reviewers on that?

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 24 September 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

i used to really like Engine Kid and had a Live @ KXLU cd that they performed a rad cover of John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High".

anyways, the other week i was w/some friends and randomly met one of the guys in the band.

jaxon (jaxon), Sunday, 24 September 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

probably Chr1s Vandebr00k3, the drummer, I'm guessin'?

i like the hush harbour cd i have. i seem to remember not particularly digging the first 764 hero cd but i think i liked some of their later stuff..

was there a colored red vinyl 7" of this or was it just in my mind? either way, i loved that song.

jergins (jergins), Monday, 25 September 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

jaxon did u like lync

lync was great. dave the drummer plays in this band colourscheme and sam has been playing guitar with the boggs.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 25 September 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

lync WAS great. they played at my house a couple times (a hell of a long time ago). i remember hearing that dave had moved to new york, probably 6-7 years ago now.

When lync started out he only had one drumbeat (a good one, though).

jergins (jergins), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:24 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Lync sneak their way onto a lineup with Unwound and J Church in Pomona circa '93... they were really great... Sam was wearing a mask.. James was totally smiling, until he popped a blister halfway through or cut himself or something, then he got really sour, then threw down his bass at the end of the short but explosive set, and sulked in a corner for the rest of the night.

0xDOX0RNUTX0RX0RSDABITFIELDXOR^0xDEADBEEFDEADBEEF00001 (donut), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

oh Unwound. I still miss them.

jergins (jergins), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

Get Here And Stay is fantastic. The "High School Poetry" 7" is also really, really good if you can find it.

Chuck Keller (c keller), Monday, 25 September 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

I have "You Were a Party" (?) on a label sampler somewhere. I like it. It was the first song I ever played on the radio.

Man I really just want to call up the hotline and record the call and YSI it

This thread takes me back; I used to see those 764-HERO signs every time I head up to Seattle (they're still there, I just haven't been home in a while)

Roque Strew (RoqueStrew), Monday, 25 September 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

count me in on that PNW emo/techno thing, I think--I liked Nobody Knows This Is Everywhere and the Modest Mouse split single a lot.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

The "High School Poetry" 7" is also really, really good if you can find it.

Thanks, Chuck Keller for pointing this out. I consider the fact that there was even one 764-Hero record I didn't already own to be a minor miracle. Even stranger is I recognized the sleeve immediately upon seeing it. I think it's possible I tried to order it long ago and it was sold out. Anyway, I've got it now, and was highly entertained to find that even though the inner label of the record tells me to "PLAY AT 45 RPM" that upon doing so I discovered a whole other helium element to John Atkins vocals I'd never heard before. I did find, however that upon slowing it down to the obviously correct speed that "High School Poetry" is indeed a fantastic song.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Thursday, 28 September 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

Also I would be interested to know what style of music folks think a song like "Typo" from "Get Here & Stay" is. I mean, that's not really reggae, is it? But it feels sortof like reggae, or funk, or something in between. But then again I suppose you could also say it kindof sounds like some cheesy Steve Miller song, too. Except it sounds a lot better than that. I mean, what would folks say that sounds like? I'm just curious. Dreamy stoned indie-pop? No, the word "pop" doesn't do it justice. Help me out here, folks.

Dare Of The Hog (Bimble...), Thursday, 28 September 2006 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

kexp played sunflower yesterday and i couldn't help but think they were biting

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:09 (nineteen years ago)
