Dagnabbit. One of the fiercest live bands I've ever seen. So sad.

>One of the fiercest live bands I've ever seen.

Seconded. Very interested to hear that final studio album.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

mickey do you hate good live music?

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

thomas, yes. thanks for staying out of charlotte.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

(just joking. please do come.)

really, i do like the idea of khanate, but when it comes down to it they just don't work too well for me. the cd is enjoyable sometimes, but the love show was terrible. from what i hear about sunn o))) shows, they may be fine, but khanate lacked all of that. there was absolutely nothing theatrical or entertaining about it. the band members stepped on stage. one of them hit a button on the ibook to start the track playing. and then they just stood there. around half an hour later they stopped and walked off stage without ever saying a word. it was incredibly boring.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

...but the love show... ignore "love." i don't know what i was thinking while typing that.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

the love show is a little old place where
weee can get to-ge-therrrr
love show baby

(haven't seen Khanate, was just givin' you shit :) )

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 25 September 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

Mickey unless you play CDs at 120db at home, I'm a touch sceptical that you couldn't find *anything* impressive about it

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 25 September 2006 08:07 (nineteen years ago)

this news leaves me wholly indifferent.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 25 September 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

A sample of the new album is here:
http://www.plotkinworks.com/media/Wings%20From%20Spine.mp3

Constructed from improvisations during the 'Capture/Release' sessions.

From James Plotkin's website:
"The past year has brought about many missed opportunities and the realization that some players (in Khanate) are more concerned with personal careers and day jobs rather than the advancement of music as an artform."

Eep. Given that Plotkin continues to work with Khanate drummer Tim Wyskida, that can only mean he's calling out Alan Dubin and Stephen O'Malley. It would be a colossal shame if O'Malley was blowing off Khanate to devote his attention to Sunn O))) - I mean, I love Sunn O))), but Khanate are something else entirely...

Ruairi Wirewool (Ruairi Wirewool), Monday, 25 September 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

O'Malley has way more things on the go than Khanate and Sunn0))) at any one time, though, and that's before you start talking about his art/design etc. I don't see why he's obliged to devote more time to one venture than any other

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 25 September 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not saying he should - I'm particularly looking forward to the Peter Rehberg collab on EMego - but it's a shame that he's blowing off Khanate altogether, they're a great band.

Ruairi Wirewool (Ruairi Wirewool), Monday, 25 September 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed entirely - my post was with regard to Plotkin's (not terribly) cryptic comment

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

:(

sleep (sleep), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

It's a pity - Khanate could be akin to Shellac - getting together every once in a while to record a world-flattening opus whenever they can be bothered. Obviously Plotkin wants more commitment than that, which I guess is fair enough, but O'Malley IS the busiest man in metal. And I suspect this is more to do with their live activities than their recording habits. I wish we could organise a summit to sort ths out. Get Dave Lombardo in to mediate.

Ruairi Wirewool (Ruairi Wirewool), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

o'malley's in a metal band?

GOD PUNCH TO DUH-DUH-DUH-DUHDUH (yournullfame), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

khanate on record = seriously disturbing
khanate on stage = embarassingly contrived

this isn't their fault...I just think that music that sounds so astonishingly, unremittingly EEEEVIL can't help but come across as faintly ridiculous when you see the people making it in front of your very eyes... and they're just human. no horns, no pustulent flesh, nuppin'. in fact, they look like quite nice fellas. it's the vocals, I think. they work best when removed from the context of the voicebox producing them.

still, it's a shame they've split.

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

How do you know it's SOMA to blame?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

DJ Mencap, they weren't even that loud. not half as loud as when I saw Acid Mothers Temple.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

Aw. You were unlucky, then. I don't think they're an especially great live band by most normal standards applied to the discipline, but they're one of the few bands who can basically get by on sheer volume, and the dynamics thereof

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 25 September 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

DJ Mencap, they weren't even that loud. not half as loud as when I saw Acid Mothers Temple.

that's not exactly a very fair comparison...half as loud as AMT is still twice as loud as most other bands you could name.

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Monday, 25 September 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

"this news leaves me wholly indifferent."

ditto. they will all end up making 400 albums of similar stuff under different names anyway. plus, they were never as cool as old lady drivers.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 25 September 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

BLP, I don't know SOMA is to blame (and 'blame' is putting it harshly), but that's kinda the impression that Plotkin's given on his website and (removed) comments on the Southern Lord forums. I don't think any of the fans are on a 'SOMA ruined Khanate!!' trip, though. I hope not.

And I've always found Dubin pretty frightening live.

Ruairi Wirewool (Ruairi Wirewool), Monday, 25 September 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

word to gawd, scott. call me when they do the 78 minute "supermarket monstrosity" cover.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 25 September 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

yea, when i saw them i liked them more when i was a block away from the show in an abandoned industrial area at night... it was pretty creepy. sitting in front of them and watching them was a lot less interesting.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 25 September 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

This thread is like the upside down version of this:

STATLER: Boo!
WALDORF: Boooo!
S: That was the worst thing I’ve ever heard!
W: It was terrible!
S: Horrendous!
W: Well it wasn’t that bad.
S: Oh, yeah?
W: Well, there were parts of it I liked!
S: Well, I liked a lot of it.
W: Yeah, it was GOOD actually.
S: It was great!
W: It was wonderful!
S: Yeah, bravo!
W: More!
S: More!
W: More!
S: More!

To the chap who says Khanate are similar to Sunn0)))- not really. ones all thick and pulverising, repetitive and droning (Sunn0)))) the other lithe and shrieking, improvised (Khanate). I've never seen Khanate live, but I can understand the thing about a normal-ish guy shrieking in such a possessed manner. Unless he had a kind of un-metalish stage presence (ie- Ian Curtis-esque possession) then it would merely appear contrived. Whereas of course, Sunn0))) live are utterly contrived, which is almost the point, ludicrous pantomime ritual, to be taken with a straight face whilst you sink into the repulsive writhing bass mass...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

how can you say with a straight face that khanate and sunn o))) are not "similar"?

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 25 September 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

They don't sound the same for a start.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
O'Malley meets Rehberg - amazing!

Jena (JenaP), Monday, 6 November 2006 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

Totally agree. Maybe the best fucking thing O'Malley has done, outside of that first Ginnungagap thing with Alexander Tucker. But hell yeah, while everyone is jizzing over that highly mediocre collab with the way overrated Boris, this shit is flying under the radar. Forgive the hyperbole, but shit. Total devastation.
