Black Flags Gimme Gimme Gimme being used to sell AIDS to school kids

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Monday, 25 September 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

wait wait nike made "revolution" a better song by using it in a commercial ... before that the song had no purpose, it didn't make anybody's life any better and nobody would have missed it if it hadn't existed but afterward the beatles could say they'd been part of something bigger than music, more important than art, medical technology and making the world a better place for feet

That Mac "Think Different" commercial with Adolph Hitler that used "Heroin" by the Velvet Undergound. And Lou Reed is Jewish!

I was horrified to hear that some band had recorded a version of the Rush Limbaugh theme song.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 25 September 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

The Limbaugh thing reminds me that a local talk station (that aired Limbaugh) used to run station ads w/the "You can talk to me" bit from "Hey Bulldog" by the Beatles as the tag.

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Monday, 25 September 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

"I Refuse to Shutup and Search the Archives" by The Wagamuffins was used to start redundant threads with redundant concepts for sale.

PappaWheelie says, ''only pick any'' (PappaWheelie 2), Monday, 25 September 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

reading that as "i refuse to schtup," must admit that's fairly selfless of ol' paul

a|ex (Pareene), Monday, 25 September 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Haha googling around I found this:

As Limbaugh's three-hour gabfest continues, he routinely pumps up the show with snippets of music from past and present rock artists: Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Jimi Hendrix, Blur, Depeche Mode, Bob Marley, Garbage. His aim, presumably, is to inject hipness into his conservatism. That he gets away with it so readily is proof of how depoliticized rock music has become.

pw reads my mind. I was going to say that then I decided I didn't want to contribute to the thread. Those commercials made me hate that song when I was a kid. Then one night during my teenage years I couldn't fall asleep so I put on some classic rock radio on the alarm clock and it came in and I was like "was that part always there? where'd that organ come from?, what the hell is going on? has this always been so beautiful?"

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 25 September 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Has anyone seen the new Cadbury ad (running in Ontario, at least) in which they recreate the lyrics to Wouldn't It Be Nice? with stuff like "And if a shark comes up and tries to bite you, you could say "I'm chocolate, I invite you!"?

Sister Pam - I came in here hoping to find a post on that commercial! Bizarre.

"I Got You (I Feel Good)" being used to sell laxatives.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

In China they used to play James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)" in a car commercial, a cover version by some band. But inexplicably, even though the first half of the commercial used the original lyrics "I feel GOOD", the second half switched to "I feel FINE". Coupled with the sexy shots of the car driving around town and a group of 9 dancers in pyramid formation throwing their hands in the air with presidential smiles, it was a nauseating commercial.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

In here that tune was used to sell furniture.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Also, a local TV channel used "How I Could Just Kill a Man" by Cypress Hill to advertise their upcoming shows. I guess they were trying to be hip.

Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" as performed by the Up With People Singers

mr. brojangles (sanskrit), Monday, 25 September 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

Its my opinion that local ads that bastardize a cool rock song is pretty bad, but a national ad campaign that uses it is worst. So it would really have to be an extemely blasphemas (sp?) example for a local ad to make my Final List.
Right now I have the Nike ad as #1, and Limbaugh using the Pretenders song as #2...I dont really watch TV, but I've heard there is a WHo song for a show called CSI, but that sounds like a true life example of the Who Sells out...also there was a Levi's ad in the UK that used 'should I stay or should I go'--i've never seen it, but apparantly it was bad enough to turn an entire generation of snooty Brits against Combat Rock...

Paul Edward Wagemann (PaulEdwardWagemann), Monday, 25 September 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

I used to enjoy and look forward to those Sunkist ads, b/c I got to hear "Good Vibrations" and watch surfing footage. What's not to love? I probably bought some Sunkist b/c of them, too. No regrets.

Its the way he shakes his ass at the shark that might be the worst part. And what does the lifegaurd do? Eats her own binoculars, thats what.

Now this list I gotta see!

mucho (mucho), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

I can tell you what's not on the list... "no blacks, no hispanics, no asians, no arabs." Chunky, drunk, WASP sorority girls who think Paul raving about the Ramones is cute... more likely.

Back to the thread, a while ago I heard the Specials' cover of Message to You Rudy in a diaper commercial or something. It was babies crawling around and being cute to a song about Jamaican street violence. I only saw it twice, though, I wonder if they figured it out.

adam j (In Place of Something Clever), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

For me it's owned by "20th Century Boy". I was blasting T-Rex for my kid brother and he had never heard their awesomeness before. When this came on it was "Oh, this is the song from that car commercial??"

AHHH!

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, someone has to find that Cadbury video and put in on YouTube for the world to enjoy - glad I could help, Ross! ;) And thank you, Rufus, for adding in that bit. I swear I sing that "I invite you" in my head all night long when I see the ad.

his sister pam (hissisterpam), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

its not on anymore, but How Soon is Now was used in a car commercial. this was probably 2000-2001 or so. since then I knew it was over and the commercials had won.
