I was at the pub last night and one of my friends insisted the he put on a Coldplay song on the jukebox. There was only of their albums in the jukebox: "A Rush of Blood to the Head". He put on track 7.

Anyway, Husker Du's "Green Eyes" vs Coldplay's "Green Eyes".

Hüsker Dü, even though it's kind of a boring song.

Friends don't let friends put Coldplay on the jukebox.

I love the guitar sound on Husker's "Green Eyes."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

This isn't even close. Hüsker Dü all the way!

haha

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

i haven't heard Husker Du's Green Eyes in ages, but i remember liking it (i feel Grant Hart's song will age better than Bob's, maybe not, maybe i just got sick of Mould's post husker career)
haven't heard the coldplay, but i'll refrain from knee-jerk rejection.

timmy tannin (pompous), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 01:32 (nineteen years ago)

The first side of Flip Your Wig makes me belief all that nonsense about the efficacy of concise, hard-fast punk tunes.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 01:41 (nineteen years ago)

Erykah Badu "Green Eyes" beats both haha

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

new order's "temptation"?

Godfrzej Ljang (godfrzej), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I'd take Kelly MacDonald singing "Temptatation" at the foot of my bed over Grant Hart doing that anyday. :-) I'd kick Chris Martin's arse if he ever entered my bedroom.

you have irresponsible friends.

ryborg3k (Badarts), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

I like how Hart cleverly keeps his sexual preference a secret by singing those (as opposed to "his") green eyes. Makes the song just a bit more universal and open-ended, as does the (equally ambiguous) reference to the potential threat posed by "a million other guys". (This was 5 or 6 years before Hart and Bob Mould came out, of course.)

Anyways: Hüskers all the way, without a doubt. I'll second the praise for Side One of Flip Your Wig, a great band's greatest "side" of music. (Followed closely by Side Four of Zen Arcade, heh heh...)

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

Hart claims he never came "out," 'cause everyone knew he was gay. Anyway, don't know about the gender ambiguity theory. I mean, is "The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill" about a "girl" just to throw you off?

You know, it's funny. I have that Coldplay album, and in the past I've listened to that Coldplay album, but for the life of me I have no idea what Coldplay's "Green Eyes" sounds like. And this, after noticing repeatedly that there's a song on there called "Green Eyes" and wondering, hey, is that a Husker Du cover?

It should be:

TS: Husker Du's "Green Eyes" vs. Pixies "Wave of Mutilation," since not only does the latter cop massively from the former, but Black Francis talked all the time about how much he loved Husker Du. I seem to recall one statement along the lines of "I only had five records, but three of them were Husker Du."

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't know that Husker Du were gay until just now. Ya learn something new everyday.

graf cycliz (graf cycliz), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

i'd rather that grant hart (and morrissey, stipe, etc.) ditched the gender ambiguity in his lyrics and wrote about men. i mean, why does every rock song have to speak from a straight white class position?

vs Hazel's "Green Eyes"

I pick Hazel.

Don't refrain from anything on our account!

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

one of the three Coldplay songs I really like. But Husker's is still better.

Anyway, if Hart was gonna replace "those" with another word, I'd think it'd be "your" anyway.

TS: Husker Du's "Green Eyes" vs. Pixies "Wave of Mutilation,"

Haven't heard Green Eyes in awhile, but do these two songs even sound remotely the same?

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'll take Matthew Sweet's "Devil With the Green Eyes" over either of these...

Awesome, I was just coming here to post the same thing.

It doesn't help the already-hapless Coldplay that you've chosen what might well be the worst song from AROBTTH. :(

x-post to Mr. Que - yes, they sound similar.

both OTM. huskers' is one of my favourite of their songs; the Badu track would be in my top ten of greatest songs ever. have not heard le coldplay.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

So I'm wrong about the Hart deliberate-ambiguity thing? Oh well, whatever, it sounded like a good theory. Melissa Etheridge did that same (apparent) thing on her first LP: lotsa anguish & anger directed at a lover who's found a new woman.

There are no Pet Shop Boys-style limming of homosexual politics in Hüsker Dü songs, the exploration of which in the context of American hardcore-punk would have been fascinating.

One of the Posies did a lovely acoustic version of Husker's Green Eyes. It's better produced than the Huskers - what isn't? - but of course not as good as the original.

I just wish that Husker Du were around with today's production gear and I'm not talking Pro Tools. The CDs are so horribly thin sounding cp. to the vinyl. Da kids keep reading Husker this, Husker that ...Husker Poo. Somebody remaster those fkers. or , has that happened?

Sorry, who are Coldplay? They sound positively prosaic...

...and would inevitably revive that "Henry Rollins: Gay?" thread for the 137th time.

üüü?

See, on a mac, you don't have to memorize a code or pull up a character map. You just hit alt + u. üüüüüüü. Same thing goes for ¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢.

It was alright when I typed it but when I submitted it was all wacky. I guess that's why you're a Mac and I'm a PC.
