RFI: "Space country"

I'm looking for something with a similar sound/vibe to Dorau & Kohncke's "Abermorgen" from the Durch Die Nacht 12", Eno and Lanois' Apollo soundtrack album, Darkel/Jean-Benoit Dunckel's "At the End of the Sky" (though it's more George Harrison, it does have a similar stoned, spacy twang to it) and some of David Lynch's instrumentals as Blue Bob...any recommendations at all are welcome.

A Small Good Thing - Slim Westerns I & II (and the Cool, Cool Water EP)

Haven't heard your examples, sorry; but when i see the words "space country", I immediately think of the Byrds' "Mr. Spaceman" and The Notorious Byrd Brothers.

I, too, have not heard your examples, but I'd have to suggest the Sadies as among the finest progenitors of "space country" at present.

Mojave 3 is really less "space country" than "earth boring"

would it be totally inappropriate for me to suggest my own band's "space country" album...?

(probably)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

The best of breed apart from those titles mentioned above are Steve Roach and Roger King - Dust to Dust, Rainer - Nocturnes and Ry Cooder's soundtrack work, especially Paris, Texas.

There are a number of instrumental bands that mine similar territory, but the "space" is occasionally obscured by the rock instrumentation:

The Album Leaf
Explosions in the Sky
Lanterna (most spacey)
Mercury Program
Scenic (most western)
Six Parts Seven
Tarentel (most liked)
Tristeza

There was a second Slim Westerns? I must hasten to the hep file sharing server ASAP.

sorta lost on what sound is being looked for here. is it instrumental bands using Ennio Morricone as a reference?

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

there's also this thread which probably has nothing to do w/the question: I found $41 on the ground today, so let's talk about Psychedelic Country!

Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball, or the live one Spyboy. Buddy Miller's guitar on "Deeper Well" gets pretty spacey.

There's a local band I wrote about a couple months back called Lomita. I called them "dour, spacefaring southern gentlemen who clearly take whiskey with their whiskey." You can pick up their record on CD Baby:

Highly recommended if you're on a "space country" kick.

I guess when I say "local" I should specify that "here" is Austin.

A strong secong to the Ry Cooder OMPS works.

Also, it seems that Bill Frissell simply must have something that'll wedge into this category - although, not nearly as atmospheric as your reference points.

Finally, see "The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death"

Maquialdora's spaced-out roots rock might fit into this. They have a desert, post-rock vibe, too. And they jam with member's of Acid Mothers.

abermorgen is so great. Best Air track never made or an Alan Parsons dub of CSNY "helpless".
