Renaud S and D

Legendary French musician, but I only recently made my first foray into his work. The album I got was called Laisse Beton, from 1977. It's very good in parts but contains too much rock'n'roll pastiche for my liking (which may have sounded witty and rebellious back then but sounds rubbish now). I get the impression that there are jewels to be found, so, Renaud-philes, what do you recommend?

The first John Peel show I ever listened to had a long track called "Back and In" by someone called Elaine Renault, which I could never find. This would be in 1974 or thereabouts.

Many years later I tried the good old internet and found it. It was "Alain Renaud" and the track, indeed, was called "Back and In" off an album called "Renaud".

I bought a really good copy of it on e-bay.

Subsequent research suggested he recorded a sequel of sorts.

So, I guess, that one.

(How about that?)

Rock 'n' roll pastiche indeed! More even than most french songwriters, it's hard to see what there is to appreciate in Renaud's stuff without an understanding of the language at least and french culture ideally. But then again, the French like Bob Dylan and rap, so who knows. I always liked the song "It is not because you are" with its pretty funny bastardization of both french and english at the same time. His 9/11 is too close to cheesy for me, though the sentiment is OK. His latest stuff on the radio sounds as good as the old stuff I think, with point blank insults at yuppies (bohos) "Les bohos" and right-wingers "Elle est facho." Good timing, too.

Hmmm - not sure why anyone would want to check out Renaud. I guess if you're really interested a best-of would be more than enough. His classic material is from the late 70s and early 80s, not that he's changed his style much since then

So, what of Alain Renaud then? Has no-one else heard of him?

Wasn't Renaud in 'Germinal'?

It's funny how you look at certain people in their fifties and you just know they were wild / cool in their younger days. I don't see that in Renaud's face somehow - he just looks kind of respectable.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

Well he's been pretty open about his alcoholism problems, which basically is what "wild/cool younger days" boils down to right? Or do hard drugs have a different effect?

I know who Alain Renaud is, Mark, although I've never heard either of his solo albums. He was a guitarist associated with Richard Pinhas / Heldon in the 70s and he's on a couple of the earlier Heldon albums. I've always wanted to hear the two solo LPs recorded for Pinhas' label Disjuncta. They're supposed to be a mellower, pastoral take on Pinhas' ambient sci-fi grind. I have absolutely no idea what became of him.

As for the Renaud being discussed above, destroy - awful French 80s mainstream pap with mild social conscience to appeal to the middle classes (or something like that). AFAIK some of his lyrics are okay, but he's pretty heavy-handed.

Yes, for a taste of his trite socially conscious lyrics, you can check out his diatribe against Thatcher "Miss Maggie"

I saw a US-made movie once with Renaud trying to act along Depardieu in the role of a 'badass' french gangster or something. It was terrible.
