SAT question!

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

"Bohemian Rapsody" duh!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I just noticed that "Prophet's Song" beats it 8:21 to 5:54!

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

Led Zeppelin, "Kashmir" (there are probably a couple more Zeppelin songs as such)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

Damn, I was going to say "One".

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

Allman Brothers Band debut

Whipping Post 5:19
Dreams 7:19

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and Derek and the Dominos:

Layla is not as long as Key To The Highway

Great thread, if you're a super geek like me.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

Kinks-"Shangri La" (from Arthur, whose longest song is "Australia")

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

Artist: The Cure
Album: Disintegration

Epic Song #1: "Pictures of You" (7:28)
Epic Song #2: "Fascination Street" (5:15)
Epic Song #3: "Disintegration" (8:23)

Longest Song: "The Same Deep Water as You" (9:21)

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

sonic youth "wildflower soul" and "hits of sunshine."

Godfrzej Ljang (godfrzej), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

"Dazed and Confused" is only the fourth longest track on Led Zepp 1. But after a big bellyful of Wank & Filler, it can swell to about five times its natural length in concert.

King-a-Ling (King-a-Ling), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

btw, did Jake Holmes ever get any royalties for that song (or even care whether or not he did)?

King-a-Ling (King-a-Ling), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 23:56 (nineteen years ago)

Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand" is 10 minutes and change, making it a full minute longer than "Down By the River".

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 04:58 (nineteen years ago)

Mercury Rev's (relatively) famous epic 'Meth Of A Rockette's Kick' is just beaten by 'Snorry Mouth', and their (slightly more prominent) 'Frittering' is well beaten by 'Very Sleepy Rivers'.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 08:46 (nineteen years ago)

pink floyd - 'welcome to the machine'

yes - 'roundabout', pipped at the post by another 'famous epic song'

guns 'n' roses - 'november rain' - topped by 'coma'

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

Wilco - Spiders (Kidsmoke)

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

i wish it was the longest song on the album, and that the one that is longer was cut short by many, many minutes

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

aw, LTYT is great! It perfectly evokes the sensation of being extremely ill (in a good way)!

Talk Talk - After The Flood is beaten by a matter of 1 1/2 seconds by fellow 'famous epic' New Grass.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

evokes the sensation of being extremely ill and extremely patient. sort of reminds me of the loop at the end of 'this dust makes that mud' buy liars and the discipline required to see the track through to its close.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

'by liars'. stupid phonetic spelling

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

Bob Dylan, "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"

(actually the shortest song on Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid)

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

What's funny is I'd always thought of "Roundabout" as Yes' concise pop hit. I imagined it to be 4 or 5 minutes. It wasn't until I just looked it up that I realized it's 8:29 and longer than "South Side of the Sky"! (But, yes, "Heart of the Sunrise" beats it soundly.)

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Marquee Moon!!

oh wait...

Ah, it's not the longest track on the remastered CD thingy. That honour goes to Marquee Moon (alt remix)...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

"A Day in the Life" is actually tied with "Within You Without You," IIRC. (Both 5:03, right?)

The longest song on What's Going On is probably the least epic-y thing on the album, "Right On."

"My God" from Aqualung is longer than either the title track or "Locomotive Breath."

Dan Heilman (The Deacon), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

A Day In The Life is about five and a half minutes long on the CD version, including the 'We'll fuck you like a Superman' bit.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Talking Heads "Cross-eyed And Painless" (approx 4 1/2 min) vs "The Great Curve" (approx 6 1/2 min)

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Wednesday, 27 September 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

"approx 4 1/2 min" = 'epic song'?

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe no one's said "Like a Rolling Stone" yet.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Velvet Underground, "Heroin" (about half a minute shorter than "European Son")

You could also make an argument for "What Goes On" from the third Velvets album.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Rush - La Villa Strangiato. Almost 10 minutes long but still half the length of Hemispheres. Murdered on a regular basis in guitar shops.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

10cc: "I'm Not In Love" ("Un Nuit a Paris" is more than two minutes longer)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

Pink Floyd Welcome to the Machine?

What?

Adam S S (Zephery), Thursday, 28 September 2006 01:35 (nineteen years ago)

A Day In The Life is about five and a half minutes long on the CD version, including the 'We'll fuck you like a Superman' bit.

Sure. And that bit belongs to the track considering the last long tone of "A Day In The Life" doesn't die out completely before that song starts (oh, well, there are a couple of seconds of a dog whistle in-between)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 September 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

come on, 'welcome to the machine' at least feels epic!

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

'Frittering' is well beaten by 'Very Sleepy Rivers'.

Isn't Sleepy Rivers is chopped up into 80+ tracks?

Tommy's Overture (maybe it's longer in the stage version, it certainly seemed it) and We're Not Going To Take it are both beaten by the underture.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

"Welcome To The Machine" may be the one most underrated Pink Floyd track (OK, along with "Corporal Clegg" that is), but "famous"?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 September 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

The Fall's Winter pts. 1 and 2 beat out by And This Day (prolley pretty obvious one though) If Winter isn't epic I don't know what is...it crosses from A side to B side

George Lochinski (Destroy A. Monsters), Thursday, 28 September 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

There's just no way Welcome to the Machine is the Famous epic of the Album with Shine on You Crazy Diamond, and then there's more Shine on You Crazy Diamond later

Adam S S (Zephery), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with Adam S S. Welcome to the Machine is the leaast notable song on WYWH, not a very fitting status for an epic.

George Lochinski (Destroy A. Monsters), Thursday, 28 September 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

yes - and you and i
