I like their music, but I don't know much about their live show. Is it worth $13+being exhausted in the next morning's classes?

Nathan P1p (hoyanathan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

I guess I should say *his* music. But you get the idea.

Nathan P1p (hoyanathan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, go, etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

Borrow Mel Gibson's mask/wig combo, in case your prof is also at the show.

xpost: you are right, I am half the man that Ronnie "Cuz" Strickland is. I hear that all the time.

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

Go, you won't be disappointed. But go easy on the crowd surfing in the moshpit.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah definitely go. At the Black Cat, right? I'll be there too. AND it will be my birthday. Score, one awesome birthday coming right up...

GO GO GO GO GO

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

It's worth being dead in class next morning.

A class which is taught by the zombified corpse of a brutally murdered loved one, who was murdered as a direct result of going to the show.

En I See Kay. (EstrangedNative), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

The one Mountain Goats show I went to my girlfriend got yelled at for dancing so we just hung out by the merch table and pestered Kimya Dawson. But since you're not in New York (sounds like) you should probably be fine.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yelled at for dancing? God. I'm so glad I don't live in New York.

vingt regards (vignt_regards), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

Of course you should go.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

ask that motherfucker if he's played Metal Gear Solid 3 yet

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

in my opinion, the mountain goats are one of the biggest musical hoaxes foisted on the naive indie population in the last 10 years. the self-aware, "literate" lyrics border on self-parody, and everything I've heard is so grey and humorless that I can't in good conscience recommend them to anyone. so, to answer your question, no.

Humorless? I could imagine someone listening to "All Hail West Texas" and thinking the first few songs might be too jokey (They're not) but far from humorless.

Period period period (Period period period), Thursday, 28 September 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously. Have you not listened to the Mountain Goats much? Did you just toss out a bunch of pejoratives hoping some would stick?

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not really sure what it means for music to be "humorless." Looking over my CD collection, I only see a couple CD's I'd actually classify as "humorous." Is that really a criticism?

like murderinging (modestmickey), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

definitely! i went to his show at the flybynight in freo earlier this year. one of my favourite gigs this year. not a bit humourless! not the music or the banter between songs.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:53 (nineteen years ago)

um i meant definitely go to the show, not definitely criticism.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

saw the Goatz recently in Mpls was a great great show.

humorless? that's the dumbest criticism i've ever heard of them....

penile punster 'richard wood johnson' finds the mountain goats "humorless"

how is that a pun? anyway, maybe 'humorless' was the wrong word, but regardless, everything I've heard (2+ albums) has this cloying, self-consciously literate element to it that drives me nuts. it seems so calculated, despite the outward appearance of being lo-fi and unpretentious.

that's just my 2 cents. you're free to disagree. :P

richard wood johnson (rwj), Friday, 29 September 2006 01:35 (nineteen years ago)

richard wood johnson = obviously home-schooled

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Friday, 29 September 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to get a flaying for saying this but I really dislike the Mountain Goats live. I can't get over the jerky head twitches, contorted facial expressions, and mannerisms of the (deliberately unnamed) lead singer. They seem pretty uncontrived but I just find them offputting and unpleasant to watch. But I guess nobody else agrees with me so I guess it might be more my own personal tick.

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Friday, 29 September 2006 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

well when I saw them live I went outside for a second and they were shooting fireworks off in the baseball stadium, so

I dunno, it was just very cool. surprise fireworks >>> expected fireworks

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Friday, 29 September 2006 02:01 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

Here's hoping the G0ats will play an Austin date the weekend of the Austin City Limits Festival that is not actually at the festival. But, I haven't been able to find any such tour date. ;_;
