Stone Roses, "Second Coming"

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Vanilla Fudge's The Beat Goes On - got to be one of the ultimate examples

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

Vinilla Ice's Mind Blowing

PappaWheelie has no answers to any question that requires actual thought (PappaW, Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

ABC - "Beauty Stab"

SAS (sschwartzberg), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

"Wu Tang Forever", at least by the standards of the 1st record.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Lauren Hill-Unplugged

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

The Avalanches' next one

(I don't really believe this, I only say it to motivate them, light a fire under their ass, like)...

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Terence Trent D'Arby
Johnny Hates Jazz
The Darkness
Gene

Portishead.

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

Why wasn't this thrad locked after I said Vanilla Ice's Mind Blowing? No one respects the protocol for locking threads these days.

PappaWheelie has no answers to any question that requires actual thought (PappaW, Thursday, 28 September 2006 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

[Rolls eyes at suggestion that "Beauty Stab" blows.]

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:52 (nineteen years ago)

"Beauty Stab" is very much OTM and was, like, the first album I thought of too. They got back on their feet to deliver a couple more good albums though (even though none of them were close to the perfection of "Lexicon Of Love")

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 September 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

I knew it would be one of the first five named here, but I still tolly disagree. Gutsy move, good listen.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 28 September 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

Terence Trent Darby basically ownz this thread with "Neither Fish nor Flesh"

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

'Portishead' should be reserved for the inevitable 'Sophomore albums that are in fact just as good as the debut only darker and more intense' list thread.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

Neither Fish Nor Flesh is TTD's best work, obv.

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

sod that

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

I second Stevem's Portishead up.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

but only cos i've just given you new thread idea

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

Not another thread with "sophomore" in the title please! SECOND. It's their SECOND ALBUM. What the fuck exactly is this analogy with albums and college years which a) is so insightful and important that it needs to be endlessly repeated and ii) applies to every single band ever?

Rant over.

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

Because ILM is principally populated by Americans.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yes but how did this strange usage come about? How did it get so popular? Why do they insist on using it? Why damnit, why?!?! [cries]

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

You have to Be True To Your School.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

ledge otm

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

cibo matto? wow really? is the first album really good?
i never hear anything i like by them so maybe i've just heard the second one.

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

take them on, on your own

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

Baa ram ewe, to your sheepschool, your fleece, your clan be true.

dance dance counter-revolution (fandango), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

I can't imagine anyone's going to come up with a better example than Lauryn Hill, except if you want to count the DOC, but that was just sad.

ramon fernandez (ramon fernandez), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

Second Coming is better than the first recd - you gotta love an album that starts with a 10+ minute track with a sampled river. The rest of it is terrific - a mix of kraut-funk and monster riffery that still sounds fresh 12 yrs on.

Beauty Stab is great too!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

The Modern World pwns this thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

it's so refreshing to hear the love for 'second coming'

i like it a lot too. nowhere near as much as the first, but all the same

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

GIVE 'EM ENOUGH ROPE PEOPLE

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

no, i love 'give em enough rope'. can't let that one pass :)

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

Solid Gold by Gang of Four

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

haha, yes i'll grant that one

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

My role here is obviously to pop up and say 'f-ck, no'!.

So..... The Modern World is wonderful! The Bruce tracks are not up to scratch, (but hell, I still like 'em) but elsewhere it's a fine record.

Solid Gold? Much on a par with Entertainment I reckon. Both are flawed.

I'll give you 'Rope' Marcello. Good call.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

Join Hands is the least essential of the Banshees first 4 records. It's a drop in quality after The Scream. I wouldn't say it's crap though.

I wonder what Stewart Osborne would say about the second Damned album? I rather like it myself.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

The second Damned album has LOL COXHILL and NICK MASON involvement and is the BEST THING THEY EVER DID

Maybe there's another thread waiting to be started: "SECOND albums unfairly accused of blowing" which would include things like Secondhand Daylight and Wh'appen?.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

And Wilder....

....but let's not.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

and "second coming"

And "Adventure" Television, oh yes.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

Adventure is terrific. Very different feel to MM, but just as great.
I'm REALLY loving the third Television album right now too.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

cibo matto? wow really? is the first album really good?

We're talking about second albums. Doesn't mean that the first is crap/fantastic. But to answer your question: probably just as horrid as all the rest.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

This one's easy : Fairweather Johnson

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Thursday, 28 September 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

Surely no-one will argue that "Mecca" by the Age of Chance blows big time.

Leaders of the News School - TIME

Ahh, I like this album (although it is miles away from their debut)

PappaWheelie puts out again and gives up again and puts out again and gives (Pap, Thursday, 28 September 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

is it implicit that said band's first (freshman) album was a classic?...cos, there's a ton of bands whose LP's ALL blow...Concrete Blonde, for one...

hank (hank s), Thursday, 28 September 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

**Blondie--Plastic Letters (besides Presence Dear, name 1 good song)**

Wu-Tang Forever, Meat is Murder, Solid Gold and Portishead? Through what set of ears?!?

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Thursday, 28 September 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

Because ILM is principally populated by Americans.

About time we stop talking about debut albums and start talking about JUNIOR albums instead then :)
