what are the catchiest rock singles of 2006?

I'd like to make a mix CD of new rock music that you can sing along in the car with friends, or by yourself, whatever.

Indie-rock and alt-rock answers are preferred, but I'll take poppier stuff since it's easier to think of those when seeing the word "catchiest."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

And just to make things easier, I'll even accept tracks from the 2nd half of '05.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

"Sundress" by Ben Kweller is pretty damn catchy.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

That one with OK Go on the exercise machines. Right? Right?

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

The Raconteurs - "Steady As She Goes"

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

The Raconteurs single wasn't bad

X-post

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

Not exactly "rock", but I liked the Gnarls Barkley version of "Gone Daddy Gone"

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Anything on the Cansei De Ser Sexy album, esp. Let's Make Love (and Listen To Death From Above), Art Bitch, Meeting Paris Hilton, and Music Is My Hot Hot Sex

John Schapiro (Vornado), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

The Young Knives - Here Comes The Rumour Mill

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

The Raconteurs single wasn't bad

That is about the best that can be said for it.

"Thunder on the Mountain" - Bob Dylan

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

winter testing (winter testing), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

pipettes, lillix, oh no ono, devo 2.0

x-post!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

midlake - roscoe

travis randy (travis randy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

The catchiest tune from CSS is This Month, Day 10. Everything else is OK, but nowhere near as great (or catchy).

js (honestengine), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

These are all great answers. More please!

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

"adventure" - be your own pet

terry ted (terry ted), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

that damned "Move Along" song.

also, the fray - "over my head (cable car)

P!ATD is also probably rock, and catchy for sure.

Jimmy_tango (Jimmy_tango), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

I second "Pull Shapes", as far as "good" catchiness goes, but I must admit I've had that absolutely deplorable Panic! At the Disco song running through my head more. Urg.

Bumblepuppy (Horbgorbling Slubberdegullion), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

The Rapture - Get Myself Into It
Ladyhawk - The Dugout

pinder (pinder), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

the 'Snakes On A Plane' song

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

Delays 'Valentine'

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

that damned "Move Along" song.
also, the fray - "over my head (cable car)

P!ATD is also probably rock, and catchy for sure.

-- Jimmy_tango (pyite505...), September 27th, 2006.

yes

the 'Snakes On A Plane' song
-- Konal Doddz (stevem7...), September 27th, 2006.

VERY yes. in fact, I was just singing this one in my car this morning (in my best attempt at a Manchester accent, as per John's suggestion)

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

Phoenix - "Long Distance Call"
Strokes - "You Only Live Once"
Pearl Jam - "Life Wasted"
Wolfmother - "Woman"
TV On The Radio - "Wolf Like Me"

Shlomo Shemesh (Shlomo Shemesh), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think YOLO was a single but it's much better than "Juicebox"...

Shlomo Shemesh (Shlomo Shemesh), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

the fray - "over my head (cable car)

Incorrect.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Definitely not for the indie-dance h8rz, but Van She- "Kelly." SO FUN.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

The Killers - "When You Were Young"
Sam Roberts - "Bridge to Nowhere"
Annie - "Crush"

Third in for the All-American Rejects "Move Along" and second in for The Fray "Over My Head (Cable Car)".

Gregory T (tubesocks), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 22:57 (nineteen years ago)

"We Hate You White South African Bastards" by The Automatic

Aloe or with Our Wives (noodle vague), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

Indie-rock and alt-rock answers are preferred, but I'll take poppier stuff since it's easier to think of those when seeing the word "catchiest."

I'm not sure what the first part of the sentence means.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

It means "HELLO DERE I = RACIST CUNT"

Aloe or with Our Wives (noodle vague), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

Foo Fighters - "No Way Back"
Evanescence - “Call Me When You’re Sober”
Muse - “Knights of Cydonia”
New Found Glory - “It’s Not Your Fault”
Raconteurs - “Hands”
Fall Out Boy - "A Little Less 16 Candles, A Little More 'Touch Me'"
The Disturbed - “Land Of Confusion”
Keane - “Is It Any Wonder?”
Click Five - "Catch Your Wave"
Pearl Jam - "World Wide Suicide"

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I'm now voting "Engwish Bwudd", or at least the first three seconds.

Bumblepuppy (Horbgorbling Slubberdegullion), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

Alejandro Escovedo -- "Deerhead On The Wall"
TV On The Radio -- "Wolf Like Me"
Midlake -- "Roscoe"
Comets On Fire -- "Sour Smoke" (albeit instrumental)
Scritti Politti -- "Dr. Abernathy," and "Robin Hood"
Yo La Tengo -- "Pass the Hatchet" and "The Room Got Heavy"
Liars -- "It Fit When I Was A Kid"
Teddybears -- "Yours To Keep"
Maritime -- "Tearing Up The Oxygen" and "German Engineering"
Morrissey -- "The Youngest Was The Most Loved"
Destroyer -- "Painter In Your Pocket"

I'm not at all sure many of these songs are singable or hummable, and they're mostly experimental, but they're also really catchy. I'd also include "Silent Shout," which I think is one of the best songs of the year, but I'm not sure it meets your criteria.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 28 September 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

MOVE ALONG MOVE A LONG LIKE A KNOW YOU DO
COME ON COME ON COME ON

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Thursday, 28 September 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'd also include "Silent Shout," which I think is one of the best songs of the year, but I'm not sure it meets your criteria.

"Silent Shout" works fine.. why the hell not?

I'm not sure what the first part of the sentence means.

Me neither.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 28 September 2006 03:45 (nineteen years ago)

fujiya and miyagi - collarbone

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with the Fray and second "Engwish Bwudd." And "White Collar Boy."

"You Only Live Once" was a single, though it doesn't sound as good as it first did to me.

Also, I'll add "Please Come Back" by Catfish Haven to the list. Does "Fidelity" by Regina Spektor count? Or "Cosmia" by Joanna Newsom?

Tape Store (Tape Store), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:07 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know if it was a single, or even from 2006, but I liked Electric Six's "Rock and Roll Evacuation." Also CSS, "Meeting Paris Hilton," for sure.

xero (xero), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

Archie Bronson Outfit - Dead Funny

Catchier than anything else on this list.

nate woolls (napawo), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

Peter, Bjorn & John - Young Folks

Gerard (Gerard), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:16 (nineteen years ago)

oh hey nobody's said "Rough Gem" yet. that's a pretty catchy one.

that Maritime album had some good hooks too, but I guess it's technically a 2005 album.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

OOIOO's "Uma" is sort of a avant-jpop "Hollaback Girl"

bendy (bendy), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

"Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" is also really catchy: I guess it would be 'rock', as it doesn't have a steel guitar, and such surface signifiers are the only thing seperating modern country from rock, it seems.

Bumblepuppy (Horbgorbling Slubberdegullion), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

Pull Shapes

titcr

I can't get it out of my head for at least an hour after I listen to it. Ehh.

vingt regards (vignt_regards), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

All-American Rejects, Snow Patrol, Panic! At The Disco and Evanescence own this thread.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

all I can remember of Pull Shapes is the two words of the chorus... rub.

CSS is otm though (and I don't even like dfa1979rip)

dance dance counter-revolution (fandango), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

danny d OTM--that panic! at the disco song is one of the best (and def one of the catchiest) of the year

HAVEN'T YOU PEOPLE EVER HEARD OF
CLOSING THE GODDAMN DOOR--NO!

max (maxreax), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

did panic! at the disco kill this thread?

max (maxreax), Thursday, 28 September 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

I feel slightly annoying for suggesting this, but "Johnny Loves Sarah" which was a Magic Dirt b-side is *hugely* catchy while rocking pretty darn hard (esp. given the band's recent radio friendly-itis). October 2005 release date, and as usual I doubt many non-Aussies have heard it. Nonetheless, as the b-side of a hit single, it ought to count, dammit.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Friday, 29 September 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

It's 2006. I heard 'Hold On Loosely' by 38 Special recently. It's rock and catchy. Hold on Loosely.

Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt (hyloolnuspstt), Friday, 29 September 2006 01:15 (nineteen years ago)

Ratatat - Wildcat

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Friday, 29 September 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

The Needles - Dianne
The Victorian English Gentlemans Club - Amateur Man

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 29 September 2006 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

Evanescence? Really? I heard the new single on the radio the other day and was unimpressed. Sure, it was halfway pleasant for the first five seconds, but the terrible angsty guitarwork completely ruined the rest of it.

Tape Store (Tape Store), Friday, 29 September 2006 03:24 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't see anyone mention "Crazy" yet, maybe because it reached peak saturation a few months back and people are trying to forget about it. Was Harrowdown Hill a single? It should have been. Also:

Junior Boys - In The Morning
Band Of Horses - The Funeral

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Friday, 29 September 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

Archie Bronson Outfit - Dead Funny

Catchier than anything else on this list.

There's a good chance that's the truest statement I've read all day.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 29 September 2006 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

How can that not be on the list?

Guillemots - Trains to Brazil
The Flaming Lips - The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song

Seconding:

Phoenix - Long Distance Call

bergholt (bergholt), Friday, 29 September 2006 05:42 (nineteen years ago)

"Steady As She Goes"
"Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor"

These are the only rock singles I've heard this year that have hooked/"caught" me.

And I don't like "SASG"

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Arctic Monkeys

Rat Nasty (ratnasty), Friday, 29 September 2006 05:48 (nineteen years ago)

oh GOD that All=American Rejets song, please shoot me! "The Devil" from the new Rapture CD even though it's not the single was stuck in my head till it was replaced by the Court and Spark's "Your Mother Was the Lightning" WE MOVE ALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Friday, 29 September 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

I wasn't thinking of Gnarls Barkely (or even Thom Yorke) as rock. Some have been picked already but, sticking to singles that got video/radio play:

30 Seconds to Mars - "The Kill"
Panic! At the Disco - "I Write Sins Not Tragedies"
Wolfmother - "Woman"
Fall Out Boy - "A Little Less..."
Pearl Jam - "Life Wasted"
Nightmare Of You - "The Days Go By Oh So Slow"

Sundar (sundar), Friday, 29 September 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

We're from Barcelona pwns this thread so much it hurts.

Nana nana naaaa!
Nana nana naaaa!

ewmy (ewmy), Friday, 29 September 2006 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

Peter, Bjorn & John- "Young Folks"

Catchiest whistling all year!

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 29 September 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

a few i don't think anybody has mentioned:

leane kingwell - holding your gun
veronicas - 4 ever
flyleaf - cassie
huck johns- oh yeah
lillix- sweet temptation
the gathering - shortest day
flyleaf - i'm so sick
voivod - the x-stream
stefy - orange county
stefy - chelsea
towers of london - how rude she was

xhuxk (xheddy), Friday, 29 September 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

That one about the monster coming over a hill.

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Friday, 29 September 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

also, left out jo and the muthaf!@#$%^ers - "give me a break!", probably my favorite "rock" single of the year unless "hair of the dog" by shooter jennings counts, which maybe it should since it (and also shooter's "little white lines") sound a lot more rock than lots of things on this thread (including some songs i listed myself), but then again as far as i know they're not technically "singles" (as might not be a few other songs I listed, for whatever that's worth.)

xhuxk (xheddy), Friday, 29 September 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

James Dean Bradfield--That's No Way To Tell A Lie (year's best rock song)
Neko Case--Hold On Hold On
Built To Spill--Conventional Wisdom
Pearl Jam--Unemployable (not a single, but should've been as it's their best song in years)
Neil Young--Let's Impeach The President

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 29 September 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

The Fray song really is the "catchiest" rock single this year.
But also:
everyone who says Midlake - "Roscoe" is incredibly right.
Muse - "Supermassive Black Hole"
Guillemots - "Trains To Brazil"
Belle & Sebastian - "The Blues Are Still Blue"
Luke Haines - "Off My Rocker At The Art School Bop"
Okkervil River - "The President's Dead"
The Knife - "Marble House"
Grizzly Bear - "Knife"
TV On The Radio - "Wolf Like Me"
Sparks - "Baby, Baby Can I Invade Your Country?"
Arctic Monkeys - "Fake Tales Of San Francisco" (their only song that matters)

danzig (danzig), Friday, 29 September 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

As much as "We're From Barcelona" owns me, "The Blues Are Still Blue" may win in terms of sheer catchiness, I think.

marc h. (marc h.), Friday, 29 September 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

please stop saying TV on the Radio, guys. it's a good album, but it is really not catchy in any way whatsoever.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Friday, 29 September 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Sonic Youth, "Incinerate"

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 September 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

okay I finally remembered the real answer to this!

Peaches - Tent In Your Pants

dang man listen to you all cock of the walk! (fandango), Friday, 29 September 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

James Dean Bradfield--That's No Way To Tell A Lie (year's best rock song)
how did I miss that? the handclaps are insane!

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Friday, 29 September 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

I Don't Feel Like Dancin' - Scissor Sisters.

Sean Robison (yaratnam), Saturday, 30 September 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)
