i'm with alfred; every vu album except loaded has been my favorite at one point in time (currently i prefer vu to the other two)
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:13 (six years ago) link
in fact i might've had a delusional second or two where loaded was my fav, first side of that record sounds really lovely on a sunny day
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:14 (six years ago) link
Mo's drumming on "Foggy Notion" alone!
yes so otm! this is maybe my favorite Velvet recording, that rhythm is so punchy, so motorik, you have to love it. this song choogles.
the 60s is still all-time for me. im so glad so much music was produced back then, you could spend a lifetime just looking through it all.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:18 (six years ago) link
VU and CCR are my two favorite death choogle bands.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:21 (six years ago) link
"Black Angel's Death Song" sounds like a wheezy noisey Dylan joke. ive never really wanted to hear that song again. "Run Run Run" choogles but i prefer them in Gothic/Romantic/Decadent mode w Nico.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:22 (six years ago) link
i looked at that list again and i know its good because i only found three things i would take off. i mean there is stuff i don't listen to on there like ray charles and the band but i get why they are there. but only three "really, out of everything in the 60s?" moments while looking at it. lots of stuff i DO listen to a lot.

Run Run Run is so amazing. yeesh. i played it yesterday. still kills me.
i turned rufus on to CCR a couple of weeks ago. he'd never really listened to them. and there was one song playing and i said to him: listen, it's the VU! and he agreed. now i can't remember what song it was. sounded pretty uncanny.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:24 (six years ago) link
frankly im just glad pet sounds wasnt #1
― marcos, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:26 (six years ago) link
a lot of stuff on Pendulum could be VU.

enjoyed your write-ups btw brad <3 and i had a good time listening to sonny sharrock yesterday
― marcos, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:33 (six years ago) link
loaded is a great album and on certain days it's my favorite (it's certainly the one i've listened to the most), but it's so uncharacteristic that i have a hard time calling it the most definitive VU album
― rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:33 (six years ago) link
Loaded is the first one I bought. In 1983? I loved it immediately. Then i bought the first album. Blew my little mind. I do remember playing Loaded for the first time and thinking hey this is just a rock album this isn't scary. But I loved it all the same.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:36 (six years ago) link
they played the HELL out of "foggy notion" and "i can't stand it" on the college radio station near me when VU came out. it was like they were 1985 pop hits.

Nice they included two Beefheart records after ignoring him on the 70s and 80s lists.

I can never make it through an entire John Cale album. Someone brought in, like, every Cale album recently and I make it through about three songs. He must be my solo Ringo. or solo George after ATMP come to think of it...
solo lou reed has it all over solo lennon and mccartney album-wise though.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:50 (six years ago) link
them's fightin words around here lol
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:52 (six years ago) link
I love three of Cale's solo records and at least six of Reed's.
― the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:54 (six years ago) link
after Lou, Nico made the best records. The End...is better than any Cale album. Nico and Yoko should have made an album together. They did the most interesting stuff.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:55 (six years ago) link
even church of anthrax just makes me want to listen to a terry riley record. it's nowhere near the best thing that terry riley was involved in.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:58 (six years ago) link
scott i love you but solo cale is where it's at
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:59 (six years ago) link
if you've tried w/ cale i guess there's nothing to be done, but at this point I think it's 70s cale > 70s reed for me
― tylerw, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:59 (six years ago) link
Paris 1919FearSlow Dazzle
^^ all I need plus mayyyybe Songs for Drella
for Reed it's Transformr, Coney ISland Baby, The Blue Mask, Legendary Hearts, New Sensations, Set the Twilight Reeling and Ecstasy
― the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link
Different mix of Reed albums for me but those proportions are about right and agree on the Cale recs (altho I do really like the Church of Anthrax too hmmm)
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:09 (six years ago) link
Church of Anthrax, Vintage Violence, Paris 1919 + Fear are all A+ classics — rest of the 70s for Cale is merely terrific.
― tylerw, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:16 (six years ago) link
i put on songs for drella today just to play test a copy and i lasted like 6 seconds. i can't listen to that.
BUT, in the interest of fairness, i just put on The Academy In Peril since I just cleaned a copy. I'm already a little bored....i think the first track is just a studio outtake.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:20 (six years ago) link
and the solo piano second track is uhhhhh........
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link
i like a lot of albums he produced though. so there is that. love that jennifer warnes album he did. stooges. lots of records.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:24 (six years ago) link
academy in peril is pretty strange -- hard to tell what he was going for there (and why warners released it!). but i really like days of steam, king harry, a few other things there.

You know what album I really like that John Cale is on? The Tax Free album that Wally Tax made after The Outsiders broke up. 1970. Such a lovely album. Cale is on every track I think. Underrated album too. Lots of people have never heard it.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:28 (six years ago) link
huh never even heard of that before!
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:31 (six years ago) link
me neither, checking it out now. richard davis, too!

I would swap out Dave "wheezy donkey" Van Ronk on Pitchfork's list for the Chicago Transit Authority album. I got a pristine first pressing of that at the store and HOLY SMOKES did it sound amazing. Unbelievable. From the Rotel to the Marantz to the Klipschs, I wish you guys could have heard it. John Cale never made an album as good as that one outside of VU.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:33 (six years ago) link
The Tax Free album is pastoral deluxe. a wafting summer breeze. of weed. so pretty.

― tylerw, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:37 (six years ago) link
(i almost made it through the first side of the Cale album...i dunno though, when you have robert wyatt and kevin ayers and peter hammill records out there in the world...)

haha, i love sally can't dance.

something about the production and his vocals on it make me queasy.

lol transformer is the better album surely but some of those tunes i've heard so many times that i can't hear them any more. perfect day, satellite of love, perhaps even wild side. well maybe not wild side
