Pink Floyd: "Corporal Clegg" C/D?

A piece of wimsy twee from Rich Wright trying to do what Syd was starting to become unable to do.

But does it work? In my opinion it does!

Showing off Wright as a brilliant and underrated songwriter. Shame he didn't become more central in the creative process later on. Classic, and the most underrated Pink Floyd track!!!!

I heartily approve of this song. It feels more Beatles-y than Barrett-y tho.

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Thursday, 28 September 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

And what a great story it would be...if only it were true.

"Corporal Clegg" was written by Roger Waters, Geir.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 28 September 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

Great song but not overrated. It sounds a little bit out of place on the album. Like something left over from "Piper".

everything (everything), Thursday, 28 September 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

Geir, we already have a thread about the genius of Rick Wright!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 28 September 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

I listened to "Point Me at the Sky" recently and just thought, "Wow, Pink Floyd moved so quickly from possibly the most fantastic, dynamic British psychedelic band into total third-rate psychedelic hackery." "Corporal Clegg" is definitely a little better.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

haha I opened this thread to say I prefer "Point Me At the Sky" - easily my favorite non-Syd Floyd track.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

Corporal Clegg belongs on "The Final Cut". It kinda reminds me of "Not Now John".

everything (everything), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Jugband blues C/C?

Anyway, I prefer Doctor Doctor and Let There Be More Light of the Roger in the Shadow of Syd songs.

PAINTBOX!

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Pink Floyd's Richard Wright, forgotten genius?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 28 September 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I guess someone has to say it: Dud (the only one on that album for me).

Joe (Joe), Friday, 29 September 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

the most underrated Pink Floyd track

My vote is for "The Narrow Way, Part III". At worst, "Corporal Clegg" is laughable, and at best, it's fine until that kazoo solo comes in.

LC (Damian), Friday, 29 September 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

as far as fantasy track selections go, very few beat saucerful
+"vegetable man"
+"apples and oranges"
-"corporal clegg"
-"let there be more light"

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Friday, 29 September 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

No kazoo, no credibility.

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Friday, 29 September 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

a pretty good attempt @ Syd style.
is that Waters singing or Gilmour?
i've been under the impression it's Gilmour.

edde (edde), Friday, 29 September 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

Even though I realise now the song is written by Waters (and it seems I checked the songwriting credits before I posted about the song in a 2003 thread here on ILM) I am still pretty certain there's none of them singing (Gilmour didn't sing in 1968 at all, did he?)

A good attempt at a Syd style, although rightfully also containing elements of The Beatles' 1967 style (in the vocal harmonies, for instance).

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 September 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

A good attempt at a Syd style

It's funny how that caught on, not only in Pink Floyd. I've always thought Syd's voice, whilst I assume it was meant to be quintessentially English, had a dash of Australian about it (unlike David Bowie's full-on Anthonly Newlwy cockney). HAve you heard the Decca 1968 recording of Joseph? There's a defininte Syd influence.

Jez (Jez), Friday, 29 September 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

Gilmour didn't sing in 1968 at all, did he?
He sings on "Julia Dream" and in parts of "Let There Be More Light" and "Corporal Clegg".

is that Waters singing or Gilmour?
They're both on there - Gilmour sings the first part of each verse, and Waters answers his lines in an over-enunciated sort of way.

LC (Damian), Friday, 29 September 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

"Corporal Clegg" is one of the best things Waters ever did - I used to play a cover version of it!

TS: Mick Ralphs v. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 29 September 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

I've seen a couple of bands doing this song but not for many years. The last time was the sadly short-lived Strathbungo band Dinky Flop (anag.).

everything (everything), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

I thought it was Nick Mason who sings the lower 'response' vocals.

I thought it was Nick Mason who sings the lower 'response' vocals.

Well I never! I thought his only vocal contributions to Pink Floyd were "One Of These Days" and the pre-flight checklist being read out on "Learning To Fly".

LC (Damian), Friday, 29 September 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

He sings "Scream Thy Last Scream", too.

lurker #2421, inc. (lurker-2421), Friday, 29 September 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

He sings the lead on that???

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 29 September 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

or part of the lead? i mean, you can hear syd on it.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 29 September 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

maybe he's singing the high, sped-up part...?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 September 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

i've only got the bbc version. there are two people singing the first few lines, then syd sings, "she'll be scrubbing bubbles on all fours."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 29 September 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

six years pass...

Great link. I am increasingly impressed by all the info one is now able to find in Wikipedia.

I, too, am impressed by the unique insights one can find on Wikipedia about this song:

"Corporal Clegg" is a song by the English psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd, and is featured on their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets (1968). It was written by Roger Waters and features David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright on vocals. The song also features a kazoo.

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 24 March 2013 12:08 (thirteen years ago)

I always hated that song until I heard the remaster that came out in the recent(ish) batch which does a lot to salvage it.
