Procol Harum: "In Held Twas In I" C/D?

This "Shine On Brightly" finishing track was arguably the first prog rock "suite" ever, and certainly their most proggy moment.

So what is there to say about it? Personally I love it, and I find it sort of the creative peak of their output (well, besides the obviously classic "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" that is). Sure "A Salty Dog" may be a better album overall, but "Shine On Brightly" is worth it just for this one epic. CLASSIC all the way!

Interesting that you find their peak of creative power on an album (and band) thrown together in support of their unexpeted hit: Shine on Brightly.

Too bad for them, hitting top stride just as they start. Nothing else gets it for them?

I always liked Simple Sister off of the US released "Broken Barricades".

As far as prog suuites--I find quite a bit of them plodding and sorry in retrospect. Much prefer the German variants of prog. They stand the test of time to my mind where the Genesis and IF sort don't.

Noted exception: Third Ear Band.

Well, if there is one band that has stood the test of time, then Genesis is it. "Supper's Ready" is best piece of music that has ever been made by anybody. And I hear the influence from "In Held Twas I" in that kind of suites.

hrmf... There are a few bits in the song I would have cut, for sure, and even though there are some neat bits, I haven't listened to the song more than once or twice and can't say I care for it all that much.

What did you think of the Transatlantic cover? :I

I just can't..I'm sorry. Donut told me not to post too much but this song "Shine On Brightly" just kills me, it just kills me. Better than a million Rolling Stones, I think.

That's nice! I like it. Thanks.

Transatlantic - a prog "supergroup" consisting of members from Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, Marillion and Dream Theater - did a rendition of this song in 2000. It was a "photocopy" rather than a cover version, really, but in spite of adding nothing new, it was nice to hear how great they had actually learned the suite.

And I now see I was asked about the Transatlantic rendition in this thread two years ago, by which time I hadn't really discovered that generation of neoproggers yet :)

one year passes...

I really like the album opener, "Quite Rightly So" too. So no talk anywhere of the reissues?

is this really the only procol harum thread? trace of a feeling, trace of regret . . .
