Anything good in the last five years?

All stories about RRR store in Lowell, Ron's allegedly shady business practices, etc. also appreciated.

I'm gonna post a discography and some S/D stuff later when I get home from work.

POX:
Doc Wor Mirran - Odds Sods & Dirtclods 3LP box
F/i - Space Mantra
F/i - Blue Star
F/i - 3LP box
History Of Unheard Music - Drop It!
Vocokesh - Ispepnaibara
Doc Wor Mirran - Severe Pig
F/i and Vocokesh split
Boy Dirt Car - Winter
RRR-100 lock groove 7"

That's pretty OTM.
Also of importance are their legit cassette issues of those Nurse With Wound records. I gotta throw out the New England 5xLP box set too, cuz lots of hometown heroes are on that. All the F/i and Vocokesh releases are great. Some of the best, unheralded space rock of the 90s.

Some more great ones:
Emil Beaulieau 'Moonlight in Vermont'
Lance Gargoyle 7"
Hanatarash 3
Los Angeles Free Music Society 10xCDR (haven't heard this, but guarantee it's wonderful)
Prick Decay 'Mud Sound For Car Stereos'
Ramleh 1-3 CDs
Skullflower 'Obsidian Shaking Codex' (also the Total CD he put out)

Five Essential 'Recycled' Series Tapes:
-Universal Indians
-Idea Fire Company
-Wilt
-Climax Golden Twins
-Reynols

I totally covet that LAFMS 10 CD box on RRR, but I've never actually heard it. I'm assuming naturally that it's the best thing on the planet.

Some things:

- 2 sides to every story
- Let he who is without sin...
- I sorta got in trouble for licensing the Hanatarash 3 from him for CD release. Busted!
- You know who Emil Beaulieau is?
- You know what RRR stands for?
- I had a great conversation with Ron about ripping the stylus out of a phono cartridge, jamming an unfolded paperclip in there, and playing easy listening records. This quick devolved into the sound variations of various types of record platters when you play them with no record on them.

Of course I'm still pissed my group's track (as heard on the LAFMS cassette) got left off the CD box. Another 15 minutes of fame down the toilet.

RRR 100 lock groove 7"
RRR 500 lock groove LP
Thomas Dimuzio - Sonicism
John Oswald 'Recycled' cassette, especially the final five minutes
Arcane Device 3 - Feedback Music - double 7"
Due Process - Combine I -- XVIII
America the Beautiful 2 CD compilation

I only own about seven or eight other RRR things, I'm hardly an expert, but these are great

as far as 'shady', it's worth noting that the 'Negativland' track that opens that compilation isn't actually a Negativland track -- they were invited but didn't have time, so he just stuck their name on. still a killer comp though.

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

The only RRR thing I own is Merzbow's Baztoutai w/Material Gadgets 2CD set, but that's pretty swell.

I have always suspected that "RRR" = "Ron's Radical Records".

Shoes say, yeah, no hands clap your good bra. (goodbra), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:02 (seventeen years ago) link

RRR used to bubble up from time to time when I was growing up in the sticks, browsing the tiny ads in Option and the like, but the only thing I ever got from them was this big manila envelope/'zine-type thing which came stuffed with all sorts of paper arcana and a noise CD compilation. The cover had this creepy clip-art Medusa-head-looking character and (what I believe) was "RRR QUARTERLY" typed in the background. I don't remember much (there was a Hanatarash interview in there) but the cover sure sticks with me.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Lasies and gentlemen... we have a winner.

I think he was, like, 12 when I first talked to him and he was going to open the store.

OK, not LITERALLY 12, but...

Woah! "Option" reference alert...

factcheckr (factcheckr), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 23:34 (seventeen years ago) link

hmm yeah, LAFMS box numero uno, without a doubt... whatta contribution to mankind. I'd say:

1. LAFMS - Lowest Form of Music
2. Hanatarash 3
3. F/i - Blue Star
4. Rik Rue - Sound Escapes
5. Boy Dirt Car - Winter
6. uh did he do that Merzbow/Kapotte Muziek split LP ? then that
7. ummm ... his awesome eBay listings where he has photos of FAMOUS NOISE PERSONAE holding up the item in question for diplay ... wait, make that #3

still haven't heard that LAFMS box.... damnation

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 5 October 2006 03:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never heard either of the 100 or 500 lock things!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 5 October 2006 03:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Mentioned this elsewhere, but Ron sent me a blood-smeared record sleeve with my Fi/Boy Dirt Car LP after the card that I used to send him cash sliced his finger open. Must have been deep, cause the stuff was everywhere! Said he didn't have AIDS though.

The LAFMS set (real CDs!) is cheap at any price. Treat yourself.

RRR 500 lock groove LP

i have this, it's grebt. maybe it's a novelty, but a pretty fun and lovingly assembled one.

That LAFMS box is also quite a looker, from what I remember. For $100, it makes sense. I've got to go for that one of these days, before it sells out. I can't believe he's still got 'em after 8 years!

myopic_void (myopic_void), Thursday, 5 October 2006 11:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I believe LAFMS has sold out. If somebody finds copies, please link to source.

I forgot the PGR album "Flickering Of Sowing Time", that is one of my favorites. That Thomas Dimuzio is awesome as well.

I have not heard Rik Rue or any of that Pure label stuff.

Other cool Recycled Music tapes:

F/i (again)
Achim Wollscheid

Some issue of Bananafish had a furious rant about Ron in it, that's all I remember.

Also classic: his Statutory Tape series that reissued the "Rising Fromn The Red Sands" tapes.

Fave story: some Forced Exposure review that described a party where there were cake-covered records playing.

Cool. I have the "Unboxed" disc and it's quite a treat.

sleeve version 2.0 (sleeve testing), Thursday, 5 October 2006 13:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the only Pure disc I ever heard was (predictably) the Thurston one. I think it was pretty good! better than that lame 'Klangfarbenmelodie' thing he put out around the same time..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 5 October 2006 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I forgot numerous excellent albums from this list - Hanatarash 3, the P. Children records, the Bruitiste compilation, Masonna, Algebra Suicide, the Testament comps, and those triple LP box sets of PBK and Le Syndikat. Good stuff!

Destroy: Warworld, Con Demek, Katharsis, Smersh ( I still have this), Master/Slave Relationship, X-Ray Pop, the anti records, and several of the comps (Colorado, Art Is The Handmaid...).

This took a while... having lots of arcane acronyms instead of catalog numbers didn't make it any easier...

then he stopped using catalog numbers altogether, I think.

The lock groove 7" is what got me started on serious turntable manipulation. I had bought it new, around '94-'95 iirc, and just had it sitting around as a novelty. Then I saw DJ olive and William Hooker do a set together in maybe '96 and Olive was using the 7" on his decks. All of a sudden a light bulb went off over my head. I don't DJ out as much anymore, but those lock grooves make for great transitions and such. I used to use them for live gigs all the time.

Anyone ever heard that Nisi Period LP "Soon The Love Balloon Will Pop"? Their track 'The Beatles Ruined Everything' from the America the Beautiful comp was a hit, and I like the title.

All I can find out about them was they morphed into Abunai...

"Portions of the music heard on WJUL were brought to you by RRRecords". The mantra of the college station that was in my antenna range and changed everything.

Algebra Suicide typified a segment of lopsided-haircut eighties that hasn't really been re-explored.
