Was the "Paisley Underground" so called because it was partly inspired by Prince's 'Around the World in a Day''s psyche-pop-rock/60s-retroism?

If not, what is the origin of the term?

Well underway for at least three or four years prior to Around The World In A Day, duder.

It's said that Michael Quercio of the Three O'Clock coined the term.

This thread makes me want to listen to the Dream Syndicate. Steve Wynn totally ripped off Prince.

"Emergency Third Rail Power Trip" was going to be the original title of 1999, but the Rain Parade beat Prince to it.

It was Morrisey's oversized paisley shirts that got them both going, IIRC.

i'd like to see Paisley (Rev. Ian) underground, amirite?

As other posters have pointed out, the Paisley Underground was around way before.

Another important point is that "Around The World In One Day" was considered sort of a failure at the time, and hardly influenced much music at all.

Paisley = 1960s, that's the origin of the term.

This is why Paisley = 1960s by the way.

I always took the name as a cross between the Velvet Underground and psychedelia - which sums up "Tell Me When It's Over" or "What She's Done To Your Mind" quite well.

That Wikipedia entry makes the Paisley Underground scene to be bigger than it really was. I always thought of it as an exclusively Californian thing consisting mostly of the folks on the Rainy Day album, with a few satellite bands like Game Theory and True West. House of Freaks were neither paisley nor all that underground.

in fact, Prince was a big fan of The Three O'Clock, and probably was inspired by them to start throwing around the word "paisley"...
