The album is inferior to most of the act's other work, yet it has that one track that makes it worth it somehow

May also call it "Great single, shame about the album", except my two examples below are both lenghty album tracks:

ELP: Love Beach ("Memoirs Of An Officer And a Gentleman")
Bob Dylan: Knocked Out Loaded ("Brownsville Girl")

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 12 October 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

Sgt Pepper (take a wild guess) - no singles but it pwns this thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 October 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, "A Day in the Life"?

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Thursday, 12 October 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

It was either that or "Fuck Me Like A Superman."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 October 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

a thousand leaves - sunday
more - cymbaline
heartattack and vine - jersey girl
pocket revolution - bad timing

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

The Friends of Rachel Worth - Going Blind
Fold your Hands.. - The Model

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'm The Ocean--Neil Young (Mirrorball)
Going Home--Neil Young (Are You Passionate?)
Leaving New York--REM (Around The Sun)

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

now playing: leaving new york

such an unmemorable record, i had no idea how this song even sounded

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

heartattack and vine - jersey girl

OTM.

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

"This is England" The Clash - Cut the Crap

Radio Free Albemuth (DocMartensBoots), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

^^ while that's probably the best song on the album, it somehow doesn't quite make it all worth it

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

saucerful of secrets to thread

Adam S S (Zephery), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

i love remember a day

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

I love ALL of Saucerful!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

marcello otm, excepting 'set the controls' which was MUCH better live on Ummagumma and 'see-saw', which is simply dull.

the cure - want (off wild mood swings) is a contender for this thread, ditto xtc for chalkhills and children, ditto breaking into heaven by the stone roses

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea (Washing Machine)

MRZBW (MRZBW), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

come on scourage, mint car bro!!! ;)

and mrzbw, you are forgetting a very important song called skip tracer. plus i like almost all of the other songs, anyway

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

"Sleight of Hand" from Technicolor. The title track is okay--in fact, all of the songs are pretty okay, but "Sleight of Hand" is totally ace. I am leaving out "It's a Kid's World" on purpose because it was a single but I like SoH better anyways. D.I. go disco!

-- Geir Hongro (geirhon...), October 12th, 2006. (GeirHong)

just heard brownsville girl for the first time recently, and it is totally great

Maf54 (plsmith), Thursday, 12 October 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

Hey. "Wild Mood Swings" contains "Mint Car", which is one of the best Cure tracks ever, and several other great songs in the same style.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

"The Whiffenspoof Song" off Godz' Alien. (It was a single before that, sure.)

0xDOX0RNUTX0RX0RSDABITFIELDXOR^0xDEADBEEFDEADBEEF00001 (donut), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

"Calling America" from ELO's album from 1986, whatever it was called.

0xDOX0RNUTX0RX0RSDABITFIELDXOR^0xDEADBEEFDEADBEEF00001 (donut), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

"So Serious" was even better.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

"Mint Car" fucking sucks and you know it.

HOWEVER, WMS has "Want", "The 13th", "Jupiter Crash" and "Treasure" on it.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

"Mint Car", along with "Let's Go To Bed", "Friday I'm In Love" and "Just Like Heaven", represents The Cure at their best.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

No it doesn't. All three of those songs are an order of magnitude better written, better arranged and better performed than "Shit Car". Stop being dense.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

destiny's child - 'lose my breath'

(although i really really like 'soldier' as well)

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

No it doesn't. All three of those songs are an order of magnitude better written, better arranged and better performed than "Shit Car".

I agree they are (slightly) better songs, but none of them starts with a genius line like "The sun is up, I'm so happy I could scream" :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

joy division closer - not bad, great textures, magistral hannet production, but inferior to Unknow Pleaseures and the singles. Except that it has DECADES...........

minerva estassi (minerva estassi), Thursday, 12 October 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

"heartattack and vine - jersey girl"

What about "Till The Money Runs Out"?

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Thursday, 12 October 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

ELP: Love Beach ("Memoirs Of An Officer And a Gentleman")

But what about Love Beach and A Taste of My Love? Both are unimpeachable classics.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 12 October 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

Killing Joke "Total Invasion"

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 12 October 2006 23:54 (nineteen years ago)

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Thursday, 12 October 2006 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

Madonna - I'm Breathless has "Vogue" on it.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 13 October 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

Elvis Costello, Goodbye Cruel World has "Peace in Our Time" on it.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Friday, 13 October 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Blondie - Autoamerican ("Rapture")

"Angels On The Balcony" is also worthwhile from Autoamerican. Always thought that Siouxsie should have covered it...

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 13 October 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

(I also think "The 13th" is superior to "Mint Car," BTW)

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Friday, 13 October 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

Continually fascinated by the degree of negativity regarding R.E.M.'s Around the Sun.

Side one of Pink Floyd's More soundtrack is great.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 13 October 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Todd Rundgren - Initiation ("Real Man")

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 13 October 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Graham Parker, Another Grey Area, "Temporary Beauty"

Ruud Comes to Haarvest (Ken L), Friday, 13 October 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

Brownsville Station, AIR SPECIAL, "Cooda Crawlin'"

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Friday, 13 October 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Echo & The Bunnymen, What Are You Going To Do With Your Life, "Rust"

SAS (sschwartzberg), Thursday, 19 October 2006 03:35 (nineteen years ago)

I don't consider WAYGTDWYL? as inferior as the '87 self titled, hence:

Echo & The Bunnymen, "Lips Like Sugar"

turkey (turkey), Thursday, 19 October 2006 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

I can't find a track to justify the existence of 100th Window . Why do I still own this again?

turkey (turkey), Thursday, 19 October 2006 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

kent - hagnesta hill (heavenly junkies)

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

"Hagnesta Hill" is perfect all over. At least in Swedish (Joakim Berg's English sounds a bit corny)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

I can't find a track to justify the existence of 100th Window . Why do I still own this again?

Because it's awesome? (PS: "Future Proof", "Butterfly Caught" and "Small Time Shot Away")

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

i think it pales a little bit next to 'isola', geir.

and of course, my main source of reference is the english version these days. though i listened to the swedish version quite a lot when staying in gothenberg. it seems to hold up better, yes

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

I like it better than "Isola", and then I like their subsequent output (after "Hagnesta Hill") even better, with "VĂ¥pen & Ammunition" being their best ever. Dunno if that one was ever released in English though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

the first song that had me hooked was 'bianca', so i'll always have a soft sport for isola.

'vapen & ammunition'...the tiger one, yeah? my friend brought that one over from sweden a while back and i gave it a few listens. definitely sounded the goods

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Holy shit! I just saw the thread title 5 minutes ago, thought to myself "Aha, Alice Cooper, School's Out" and went to get coffee. Filled my cup (for the 4th time today) & returned to my desk to find the very song itself playing on the radio!

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Lou Reed, Street Hassle. Hint: the one track is not "Gimme Some Good Times".

Jamesy (SuzyCreemcheese), Thursday, 19 October 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

"School's Out" is a great album, with several tracks way better than the title track. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 October 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

i think psychic hearts is pretty unbearable except for 'elegy for all the dead rock stars' and 'female cop.'

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 20 October 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

"Regret" is the lone bright spot on Republic. The rest of that album seems to me a lame attempt at repeating the style and success of one of my least favorite NO songs, "World In Motion."

turkey (turkey), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 07:43 (nineteen years ago)

Every Squarepusher album after Hard Normal Daddy.
